In a rather spooky incident, a ship lost in the Pacific Ocean in 2009 reappeared off the coast of southern Myanmar last week, shocking local fishermen who also discovered that the freighter had no cargo and crew members.

According to reports, the ‘Sam Ratulangi PB 1600’ was lost at sea nearly a decade ago. It recently reappeared on a sandbar approximately 11 kilometres off the coast of Thama Seitta village. It was last seen off the coast in Taiwan in 2009.

The ship is a massive 177 meters in length and 27.91 meters in width. It weighs 26,510 tons, according to reports.

Strangely, the fisherman who spotted the lost ship on August 30 found no crew member or cargo when they entered the freighter. Even the Myanmar navy was baffled when they inspected the ship.

"No crew or cargo was found on the ship. It was quite puzzling how such a big ship turned up in our waters," the Myanmar Times quoted U Ne Win Yangon, a Myanmarese MP.

The ship was in running condition, the newspaper quoted the general secretary of the Independent Federation of Myanmar Seafarers, U Aung Kyaw Linn.

Another report said the ship was not haunted as it got detached from a ship-wrecking factory in Chittagong, Bangladesh and drifted towards Myanmar.

However, this was not the first instance when a lost vessel reappeared in Asian waters. In 2015, 11 damaged boats were spotted in the Sea of Japan with dead bodies.
