A truck driver lost his dump box on an overpass on Hwy. 401 early Wednesday morning closing a section of the highway.

“This dump box came off of the truck. It’s just down the road travelling Highway 401 eastbound express lanes approaching Mavis Road. The box was obviously lifted when it hit this pedestrian overpass. There were no injuries to the driver,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

“The box should have been down when driving. (The driver) had just dumped it in the construction zone where they are just finishing the express and collector lanes back towards Mississauga Road.”

Schmidt says the problem will take several hours to clear.

Bridge engineers have inspected the bridge.

“Hopefully they will give us the green light to reopen the lanes as soon as the box is removed,” Schmidt said.

The wedged bin seems to have distracted drivers passing on the eastbound collectors lanes as the OPP later tweeted about an accident involving three vehicles right next to where the truck hit the overpass.

“People not paying attention,” Schmidt said. “If you’re going down the road, you’ve gotta look forward and be aware of changing traffic.”
