Former President Donald Trump (R) launched an attack on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) Thursday evening for the way that the governor handled the coronavirus pandemic.

DeSantis has been widely praised by conservatives, moderates, and even some liberals for the way that he responded to the pandemic as he battled against measures touted by Dr. Anthony Fauci and refused to shut down his state’s economy and public school system. More Americans moved to Florida during the pandemic than moved to any other state as a result of how the state handled the pandemic.

Trump began his statement with a long-winded sentence, saying, “NewsCorp, which is Fox, the Wall Street Journal, and the no longer great New York Post (bring back Col!), is all in for Governor Ron DeSanctimonious, an average REPUBLICAN Governor with great Public Relations, who didn’t have to close up his State, but did, unlike other Republican Governors, whose overall numbers for a Republican, were just average—middle of the pack—including COVID, and who has the advantage of SUNSHINE, where people from badly run States up North would go no matter who the Governor was, just like I did!”

Trump continued by saying that DeSantis was “desperate” in 2017 and that DeSantis “had low approval, bad polls, and no money, but he said that if I would Endorse him, he could win.”

“I also fixed his campaign, which had completely fallen apart,” Trump continued. “I was all in for Ron, and he beat Gillum, but after the Race, when votes were being stolen by the corrupt Election process in Broward County, and Ron was going down ten thousand votes a day, along with now-Senator Rick Scott, I sent in the FBI and the U.S. Attorneys, and the ballot theft immediately ended, just prior to them running out of the votes necessary to win. I stopped his Election from being stolen…”

“And now, Ron DeSanctimonious is playing games!” Trump concluded in his attack on DeSantis. “The Fake News asks him if he’s going to run if President Trump runs, and he says, ‘I’m only focused on the Governor’s race, I’m not looking into the future.’ Well, in terms of loyalty and class, that’s really not the right answer.”

The backlash to Trump’s remarks was swift and far-reaching:

Christ, just shut up already.

If he doesn't shut up and go away, he's going to torpedo any shot we have at the White House in 2024.

Former President Trump followed up an unprovoked attack on Florida’s Ron DeSantis with a strange swipe Friday morning at another popular Republican governor, Glenn Youngkin of Virginia.

In both cases, the former president, who is expected to again seek the White House in 2024, claimed credit for the success of his targets. While the attack on DeSantis was withering, the comments about Youngkin included a bizarre observation about his name and a backhanded vote of confidence.

“Young Kin (now that’s an interesting take. Sounds Chinese, doesn’t it?) in Virginia couldn’t have won without me,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I Endorsed him, did a very big Trump Rally for him telephonically, got MAGA to Vote for him – or he couldn’t have come close to winning. But he knows that, and admits it. Besides, having a hard time with the Dems in Virginia – But he’ll get it done!”

Trump is expected to announce a 2024 White House bid as early as next week, and both DeSantis and Youngkin have been floated as potential primary opponents. While it is true Trump supported both in their runs for governor, neither DeSantis nor Youngkin have said they intend to run for president.

It’s possible Trump zeroed in on Youngkin because earlier Thursday his popular lieutenant governor, Winsome Sears, said she would not support a Trump 2024 bid. Although she has previously been a strong supporter of Trump, she said the midterm results showed his time has passed.

“A true leader understands when they have become a liability,” Sears said. “A true leader understands that it’s time to step off the stage. And the voters have given us that very clear message.”

Like DeSantis, Youngkin has not sought to engage Trump despite the former president’s sniping. The Thursday attack on DeSantis followed Trump’s earlier effort to coin one of his trademark nicknames for the Sunshine State governor, calling him “Ron DeSanctimonious.” The attempt appeared to fall flat, as many if not most Trump supporters also admire DeSantis, who won re-election Tuesday by a margin of nearly 20%.

On Thursday, Trump went much further. First, he claimed credit for DeSantis’s narrow 2018 gubernatorial victory, then called him an “average” governor and sought to discredit DeSantis’s handling of the COVID pandemic despite the Florida governor’s strong anti-lockdown and anti-mask and vaccine mandate stances.

He ended the blitz by making it clear what was really annoying him: The prospect of a 2024 primary challenge.

It's Trump against the entire world now. There's a lot that goes into a political campaign. Unless the Dems are playing dirty tricks like they did in some of these mid-terms, nobody will back Trump if he keeps this garbage up.

Just out of curiosity, how is it a dirty trick to encourage your opponent to elect a primary candidate who'll have no reasonable chance to win the General Election?

They didn't just encourage it, they funded those candidates throughout their respective primaries. If the Republicans did the same thing, then we wouldn't hear the end of it. Every Democrat and media outlet would be screaming to high heaven about it, and it would end up hurting us. It's a dirty trick when the playing field isn't level when it's supposed to be.

So, because the Republicans weren't as clever, it's a dirty trick? We heard plenty about it here in PA back during the primaries. Funny how the GOP didn't cry about it until the election deniers got handed their hats in the General Election.

So, just to be clear, if the Republicans did pull this stunt, and won because of it, then you'd be ok with it?

Yep. In fact, here in PA Mastriano supporters thought it was crazy for Shapiro's campaign to fund ads for Trump's toady during the primary.
