All the sports books have it as a toss up.

I don't really follow soccer but I'd like to see Messi win tomorrow.

Ok again I don't watch much soccer but that was the craziest match I've ever seen. Honestly one of the best games in any sport I've ever watched live on tv. What a blast. Wish they'd keep playing because there was going to be a goal in the next 5-10 minutes it felt like but I also get that those guys ran for almost two hours and I don't know how you could keep that up

However, this is EXACTLY why I can't take soccer seriously. Here is the world's biggest soccer competition that happens only once every 4 years and your side spends the better part of a year trying to qualify for it, and the championship match is decided on penalty kicks. :|

How about if we take game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals and decide it on penalty shots? Or maybe decide the winner of the Super Bowl with a field goal kicking contest? Or maybe we could decide the 7th game of the World Series with a home run derby? Or game 7 of the NBA finals with a 3 pointer contest?

The World Cup happens once every 4 years, decide the fucking championship match on the field. Play until there's a winner. Not this penalty kick bullshit.

Problem is the players would be tired for next match. Perhaps it's ok for the Grand final, though. Fight till death!

Ya I think a fair counter argument is that some of the players RUN for 6-7 miles or 10-11 km in just 90 minutes including bursts of full out sprints. Add on another 30 minutes and that's an insane amount of stamina required, soccer players need some of the best endurance of any team sport. The game would just diminish to shit if it dragged on another 30 minutes I'd have to think? Other sports like hockey use far more subs. But... I agree, I'd have preferred next goal wins still. Or give it another 15 minutes at least... the pace was still high. For me that was still unbelievably fun to watch right till the end even if I think a shootout is kinda weak.

Can't buy that argument. You say that the NHL has more substitutions during a game. While that is true, I have watched playoff series in the NHL where one game will go into triple OT and then the next game goes into double OT, sometimes on back-to-back nights depending on the scheduling. Also, in hockey, the players are constantly moving the entire time during their shift. Soccer players, especially on defense, aren't running around hardly at all when the play is on the opposite end of the pitch. Soccer players spend A LOT more time either walking/lightly jogging around than they do running at full speed while hockey players do not stop at all during their shift. And if NHL players can play up to four 7 game series and every single one of those games is play until someone wins, then the WC can have one single championship game that is played once every 4 years, actually settle it on the field until one side actually wins.
