LSU has been forced to hire a bodyguard for star gymnast and TikTok sensation Olivia Dunne after the team’s season opener in Utah last week was swarmed by rowdy fans.

Dunne’s coach, Jay Clark, said a security officer will now be posted outside the team locker room and at their hotels when the team travels.

“That [bodyguard] will be in our hotel and outside our locker room and getting us to and from the bus at the venue,” Clark told The Advocate/Times-Picayune. “(The officer) will be there to create a perimeter that keeps everybody safe.

“We want to be accessible to our fans with autographs and kids, but we also don’t want to bury our heads in the sand. We want to make sure everybody is safe at all times.”

LSU is considering changing its policy of how accessible the athletes are to fans, the paper reported.

“We are going to change some of the policies of allowing the girls to go into the stands immediately following a meet,” Clark said. “We’ve always allowed them to go up there post-meet with their families and interact with them.

“We want to make sure we still provide them with that time with their families, but there won’t be any more going into the stands and there will be a limited amount of time that they can interact with the fans in the stands over the rail and that will be monitored closely.”

During the team’s season opener last Friday at the University of Utah, unruly fans carrying signs and cutouts of Dunne chanted for her throughout the meet, despite her being out with an injury. The antics disrupted other athletes’ routines.

Afterward, video circulated of a large group of males lined up outside the arena chanting “We want her,” and Dunne’s name repeatedly while waiting to see her exit the arena. Former Olympic gymnast and current TV analyst Samantha Peszek recorded the video, and called the group “actually so scary and disturbing and cringey,” in her caption.

According to KSL.com Sports, LSU had to move its team bus to avoid the group of boys.

The mother of Jillian Hoffman — a player on Utah’s team — posted on social media that she saw fans acting in a disrespectful manner in the stands. She also claimed fans made derogatory comments toward her daughter, calling her “Livvy 2.0.”

“I could see things beginning to get bigger,” Clark said. “We wanted to get ahead of it, but we didn’t see what happened last week coming as big as it’s been. It’s been bubbling under the surface for a year now.”

With 6.7 million followers on TikTok and 2.8 million followers on Instagram, Dunne, the 20-year-old Hillsdale, N.J. native, is one of the most prominent athletes in college sports.

According to On3, Dunne, a junior, is the highest-paid female athlete in college sports, raking in $2.3 million.

After the meet at Utah, Dunne spoke out about the incident.

“I will always appreciate and love the support from you guys, but if you come to a meet, I want to ask you to please be respectful of the other gymnasts and the gymnastics community as we are just doing our job,” Dunne tweeted.

LSU next plays at the University of Kentucky before returning for its home opener on Monday against Oklahoma.

Why?

Because she does the Tik Tok Instagram thing, and she now has a sponsor to push their products on her content. That's the big thing now: if you're banging hot and have lots of followers on social media, companies will pay you to feature/model their products on your accounts.

and with name-image-likeness (NIL) deals, college athletes can make serious dough and not have it impact their athletic eligibility.

“Using” an athlete’s NIL would involve a brand leveraging their name, image, and/or likeness through marketing and/or promotional endeavors.

The NCAA officially made it legal for athletes to profit off of their NILs on July 1, 2021. Since this initial passing, individual states have begun to pass their own laws detailing the rules for athletes that attend colleges in their state. Universities have also begun to produce rules and programs for their student-athletes.

Ok, so 'paid' extends beyond her professional sporting fees. The good life.

Might as well milk it while you've got it I guess..

Exactly. They cannot be paid as an athlete by the school they are attending, but they are free to sign endorsement contracts based on their name, image, and likeness.

LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne has had to go to battle on all fronts this year as she’s had to recover from a leg injury while fending off overzealous fans making strange comments on her TikTok.

The latter happened this past week as Dunne needed to throw some cold water on a thirsty fan who replied to one of her videos with the comment, "Mommy," which was accompanied by a heart emoji.

"No, I’m not going to crush your skull with my thighs. Also, I’m not your mommy," Dunne replied before deleting the response video altogether.

Dunne, the all-around gymnast from New Jersey, has garnered more than 7.1 million followers on TikTok and is among the top athletes who have the most lucrative name, image and likeness deals. She’s had to deal with crazed fans all season long, even with some getting razzed up at one of her meets.

LSU added extra security once reports of incidents surfaced after one of the Tigers’ matches. Dunne also had to ward off critics of her social media postings.

"There are some people, occasionally, that do reach and it is a bit concerning," she said on the "Today" show in January. "As a woman, you’re not responsible for how a man looks at you and objectifies you. That’s not a woman’s responsibility."

Dunne didn’t compete in Friday’s match against No. 2 Florida. The No. 8 Tigers scored 198.100 points in the win, their highest score of the season.

"We needed that. We’ve been improving week after week and the one thing that was missing was the win. It was special to get a win like that," LSU coach Jay Clark said via the school’s website. "They did such a great job. Our message all week was to just put pressure on them and see what happens, and we did that and performed at a high-level tonight. Now, we get ready to go again next week at Alabama."
