After 23 years of marriage, Stefonknee Wolscht's wife Maria gave an ultimatum: "Stop being transgender or leave."

Unwilling to suppress her true self, she left Maria and their seven children to lead a new life.

But in yet another unexpected twist, she then began to identify as a six-year-old girl, dressing in children's clothes, wearing her hair in pigtails, playing with dolls and sometimes using a pacifier.

Now 59, she's spoken exclusively to the Daily Star, opening up about her journey of self discovery, the problems she's faced and the agonising decisions she's had to make.

Stefonknee, a 6ft 2ins mechanic and snowplow operator from Toronto, Canada, said she left her family in 2009 and her relationship with them broke down.

She had hormone replacement therapy, started to live as a six-year-old girl and met a polygamous couple, Adrian and Serena, who became "mommy and daddy'".

Stefonknee explained: “He (Adrian) found me on a fetish website. We went out for lunch and hit it off really well."

Adrian introduced Stefonknee to his wife Serena and they soon established their unconventional dynamic.

Stefonknee said she decided to identify as a young girl because she wasn't able to at that age.

In addition, she said "age play" had also helped her cope with the anguish of being arrested and jailed - although she would not disclose the offence this related to.

She added: “I would call them ‘mommy’ and ‘daddy’ and I was able to because there was a lot of stress in my life."

At certain points, Stefonknee has "digressed" to being six-years-old for up to 50% of the time. Now, it can be as little as 10%.

She still performs adult tasks such as driving and drinking coffee, but when in active age play, she does as her 'parents' say.

“They would often tell me to just go take a bath, put on a dress," she said.

She added: "They'd say, 'We're going to do your hair and you can just colour or do a puzzle today.'"

Her new life was worlds apart from her old one.

Stefonknee got married to Maria in 1986.

And she said it didn't take her bride long to cotton on to her interest in cross-dressing.

“One day, she saw me looking at women's lingerie in a Sears catalogue," Stefonknee said. “She questioned me and I told her I wasn't looking at the women, I was looking at the clothes, and she went and bought me some clothes.

“We got married and started our family and for the next 15 years, I got to be a mom to all these little babies. We had seven children.”

But after more than two decades together, it fell apart.

Stefonknee said: “After 23 years, my wife asked me to stop being transgender or leave. She thought I was getting too involved with the trans community, so she wanted me to stop or leave.”

In the subsequent years, Stefonknee went on a downward spiral.

She lost her job after customers refused to accept her new identity and was left homeless for a period. She hit rock bottom and tried to take her own life.

According to Stefonknee, Maria took out a restraining order, stopping her from seeing her children.

In 2012, Stefonknee was invited to her daughter's wedding, but only on the condition that she dress as a man, not speak to her family and sit at the back of the church.

A few hours later, she again tried to end her own life.

Opening up about the obstacles she's faced, Stefonknee said church-goers in her local community at one point claimed she had been "possessed by the evil one".

But now, after arrests for breaching her restraining order and a stint in prison - where she even lived as a little girl in solitary confinement - she is finally "in a good place".

After more than a decade apart, she was reunited with two of her children in October 2019.

She admitted some of her children are more accepting of her lifestyle than others, but that her youngest daughter, at the age of four, had said to her mother: “Boys can be girls and girls can be boys.”
