A Pottsville area woman has been charged with stealing money from a fundraising event for a cancer patient.

Camille Yoder, 55, was charged Thursday with one misdemeanor count each of theft by failure to make required disposition; theft by deception; and receiving stolen property.

Minersville police Patrolman Jeffrey Bowers and Schuylkill County Detective Shawn Butler said the charges result from an event that occurred Feb. 11 at the Sunny Rod & Gun Club in Minersville.

The officers said Yoder hosted a pulled pork fundraiser for a person suffering from cancer and contacted a chef who prepared enough pork for a minimum of 80 sandwiches that were to be sold as a platter with coleslaw and a baked potato for $15 each.

Numerous people donated $15, believing the money was going toward the cancer patient. The victim’s family contacted Yoder to ask about the proceeds.

Police said Yoder eventually met with family members and handed over $600 but kept the remaining $780, saying she had expenses in making the coleslaw.

The charges were filed with Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko, Port Carbon.
