Far left Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) expressed her disgust in a tweet on Tuesday over a viral Twitter account that parodies the congresswoman.
The account, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Press Release (parody), gained steam after Twitter boss Elon Musk interacted with a tweet it posted which jokingly remarked, “This might be the wine talking, but I’ve got a crush on @elonmusk,” to which the tech billionaire responded with a fire emoji.
The New York Democrat informed her Twitter followers, “FYI there’s a fake account on here impersonating me and going viral. The Twitter CEO has engaged it, boosting visibility. It is releasing false policy statements and gaining spread. I am assessing with my team how to move forward. In the meantime, be careful of what you see.”
The account was created in 2018 under the same parody theme, enjoying moderate success until the account went offline in May 2019. It began posting again on May 22 this year, with hundreds of tweets in the past week.
Some of the highlights of parody account include:
“I’m having my staff report every single tweet that makes fun of me to the DOJ.”
“If @elonmusk wants to have a chance with me, he’ll immediately ban the parody account of me. This is like literally not funny.”
“To make windmills more effective – when the wind doesn’t blow, we should have helicopters hover over each of them and keep them turning year round.”
“Every time my boyfriend farts – I make him plant a tree to offset his carbon emissions.”
The account’s blue checkmark, offered to Twitter Blue subscribers for $8 a month, was temporarily removed on Tuesday for an unknown reason, according to the account owner. It was reinstated several hours later. Many have speculated that the parody account might have violated the Twitter Blue terms of service as being “misleading and deceptive,” but many have pointed out that AOC’s Twitter account has millions more followers and a gray check mark given to all “government or multilateral” representatives.
