The “unknown item” found in the West Wing that forced a brief evacuation of the White House Sunday night and drew a hazmat team to the executive mansion initially tested positive for cocaine, according to officials and a dispatch call made that evening.

“We have a yellow bar stating cocaine hydrochloride,” a DC firefighter stated in a radio communication at 8:49 p.m. Sunday.

“Bag it up and take it out,” the firefighter told the hazmat team.

The initial dispatch call stated that the white, powdery substance was found in the residence’s library on the ground floor of the building.

However, officials familiar with the incident told The Post the purported cocaine was found in a holding area in the West Wing that is accessible to both White House staff and guests. DC Fire and EMS did not immediately respond to a request to clarify the discrepancy.

President Biden, 80, was at Camp David at the time of the incident, as was his son Hunter, who has admitted to a past crack cocaine addiction. The 53-year-old was part of the family party that returned to Washington from the presidential retreat for July 4 festivities later in the day.

The West Wing is the administrative heart of the presidency and includes the Oval Office, the offices of executive staff, the Cabinet Room, the Roosevelt Room, and the press briefing room.

The Secret Service told The Post that the agency “does not comment on an active investigation,” with spokesman Anthony Guglielmi later saying in a statement that further tests will be conducted to confirm that the substance is indeed cocaine.

Authorities are trying to determine how the substance got into the White House after a Secret Service agent found the powder during a routine sweep of the premises.

News of the positive test prompted mockery from conservative commentators already outraged at the kid-gloves treatment the first son has received from much of the media.

“The story about a bag of cocaine found in the president’s library is about a fathers [sic] love for his son,” tweeted Spectator contributing editor Stephen L. Miller.

One cheeky user created a meme showing Hunter snorting cocaine.

“357 Former Intelligence Chiefs Sign Open Letter Blaming Russians for Cocaine in White House Library,” snarked Wall Street Journal film critic Kyle Smith, referencing the “Spies Who Lie” letter used to suppress reporting on the first son.

“C’mon Hunter would never lose track of an important personal item,” Smith added in another tweet.

Some users posted memes depicting the Biden scion as Al Pacino’s Tony Montana character from the movie “Scarface” while others modified the game of Clue to place “Hunter Biden, with the 8 Ball, in the Library.”

While the Secret Service and other law enforcement entities are often called to investigate suspicious packages on the perimeter of the White House complex, it’s far rarer for the building to be cleared, either due to potentially hazardous materials or other incidents.

In September 2020, letters containing ricin, a lethal substance, were mailed to the Trump White House but were intercepted by investigators before reaching the residence.

In 2017, an intruder hopped the White House fence while carrying a backpack and made it to within feet of the residence before he was apprehended. The Secret Service said he was not armed and the backpack contained no hazardous materials.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the Secret Service ordered staffers to evacuate the White House after receiving a report that one of the four hijacked planes was bound for Washington. In the wake of those attacks, anthrax scares led to the evacuation of the offices of US senators and the Supreme Court.

A separate ricin-laced letter was sent to the White House in 2003, but was also intercepted without incident.

On a less serious note, the executive mansion underwent a deep clean on the day of Biden’s inauguration in deference to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In his memoir “Beautiful Things,” Hunter described in great detail his years-long battle with cocaine addiction.

Rumors circulated in April that Hunter Biden may have been crashing at the White House for a time to avoid being served with court papers by the mother of his love child.

In his memoir “Beautiful Things,” Hunter detailed his years-long battle with cocaine addiction, which he said intensified after the death of his brother, Beau, in 2015.

Many photos, text messages and other communications revealing his cocaine abuse ended up on the first son’s now-infamous laptop, including recently surfaced images of Hunter smoking crack behind the wheel of his car in a residential Arlington, Va., neighborhood in the summer of 2018.

Recently, images surfaced of Hunter smoking crack behind the wheel of his car in 2018 in a residential Arlington, Va., neighborhood.

Last month, the first son reached a probation-only plea deal with the Justice Department for tax misdemeanors and entered into a pretrial diversion agreement for lying on a federal gun purchase form about his drug use.

If a judge approves, Hunter Biden will likely serve two years of probation and be barred from owning a firearm again. He also must remain sober.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., is calling on the head of the U.S. Secret Service to give Congress more information about the bag of cocaine found inside the White House in recent days.

He blasted the illicit discovery as a "shameful" moment for the White House in a letter to Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle, demanding a staff-level briefing on the matter by next week.

"This alarming development requires the Committee to assess White House security practices and determine whose failures led to an evacuation of the building and finding of the illegal substance," Comer wrote, adding that his committee would need "additional information."

"The presence of illegal drugs in the White House is unacceptable and a shameful moment in the White House’s history," the top Republican wrote.

"This incident has raised additional concerns with the Committee regarding the level of security maintained at the White House. In order to assist the Committee with its investigation, please provide a staff level briefing on this matter by July 14, 2023."

There have been conflicting reports about where the cocaine was found. When the news first broke, it was alleged the substance had been found in the White House library. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Wednesday that it was in a "heavily traveled" part of the West Wing. Multiple outlets reported on Thursday that it was found near the West Executive entrance, a re secure location than previously thought.

The Secret Service is currently investigating the incident, which the White House said occurred while President Biden and his family were away at Camp David.

"Where this was discovered is a heavily-traveled area where many White House- West Wing, I should be even more specific, West Wing visitors come through this particular area, I just don't have anything more to share," Jean-Pierre said Wednesday.

The cocaine discovery has prompted even more intense scrutiny from Biden's Republican critics, many of whom are already accusing the president of improperly being influenced by his son Hunter Biden's former foreign business ties.

Some of Biden's critics have even questioned if the cocaine belonged to Hunter, a recovering drug addict.

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., wrote to the Secret Service on Wednesday to demand more information on the finding.

"If the White House complex is not secure, Congress needs to know the details, as well as your plan to correct any security flaws," he wrote.

The Secret Service announced Thursday that it has closed its investigation into the cocaine found at the White House earlier this month and said it is "not able" to "single out a person of interest" because of a lack of physical evidence.

In a statement Thursday, after briefing members of Congress on the matter, the Secret Service said the cocaine was found on July 2 "inside a receptacle used to temporarily store electronic and personal devices prior to entering the West Wing."

The Secret Service said it has been investigating "how this item entered the White House," including a "methodical review of security systems and protocols."

"This review included a backwards examination that spanned several days prior to the discovery of the substance and developed an index of several hundred individuals who may have accessed the area where the substance was found," the Secret Service said. It said investigators developed "a pool of known persons for comparison of forensic evidence gleaned from the FBI’s analysis of the substance's packaging."

The Secret Service said it received the FBI's lab results on Wednesday, and said the effort "did not develop latent fingerprints and insufficient DNA was present for investigative comparisons."

"Therefore, the Secret Service is not able to compare evidence against the known pool of individuals," the Secret Service said, adding that the FBl's evaluation of the substance "also confirmed that it was cocaine."

"There was no surveillance video footage found that provided investigative leads or any other means for investigators to identify who may have deposited the found substance in this area," the Secret Service continued. "Without physical evidence, the investigation will not be able to single out a person of interest from the hundreds of individuals who passed through the vestibule where the cocaine was discovered."

"At this time, the Secret Service's investigation is closed due to a lack of physical evidence," they said.

The Secret Service briefed members of Congress on the investigation Thursday morning.

Prior to the Secret Service's confirmation, a source familiar told Fox News Digital that Secret Service officials said they planned to end the investigation Friday, without determining who the cocaine belonged to. The source said the Secret Service officials said they still do not know who brought the cocaine into the White House.

After being briefed, Rep. Tim Burchett confirmed to reporters that the investigation would be closed without naming a suspect. Burchett also said the Secret Service told members that less than 1 gram of cocaine was found.

There have been conflicting reports about where the cocaine was found. When the news first broke, it was alleged that the substance had been found in the White House library. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre later told reporters that it had been in a "heavily traveled" part of the West Wing. Then, it was reported that the cocaine had been found near the West Executive entrance, a more secure location than previously thought.

The White House said the incident occurred while President Biden and his family were away at Camp David.

Some of Biden’s Republican critics have said they believe the administration is not interested in finding the person’s real identity.

A bag of cocaine found in the West Wing last month reportedly may have belonged to someone in the “Biden family orbit” — and the president allegedly knows who it is.

Soldier of Fortune publisher Susan Katz Keating made the shocking claim, citing three security sources, in a report published Sunday — even texting a number linked to President Biden in a bid to sniff out the culprit.

The Post has not been able to independently confirm the Soldier of Fortune report and the Secret Service has vehemently denied it.

According to Keating, while the Secret Service publicly announced July 13 they had closed the investigation without identifying a suspect due to a “lack of physical evidence,” authorities were able to follow enough clues to come up with a name — and were confident enough in their detective work to inform the commander-in-chief.

“If you want the name, ask Joe Biden,” one source told Keating.

“He knows who it is.”

“It was someone within the Biden family orbit, and it wasn’t Hunter,” said a second source, referring to the president’s adult son — an admitted recovering drug addict.

Keating then said she texted a number provided by the White House, purportedly to send Biden SMS messages, and asked point-blank: “Three trusted sources tell me the Secret Service gave you the name of the person who brought the cocaine into the Executive Mansion. Is this true; and if so, can you please confirm the name?”

The message from Keating bounced back with the label “Not Delivered.”

The Post sought to replicate the process by texting the same number provided in the Soldier of Fortune article.

The response appeared to be an automated text linking to the Community messaging platform.

Last July, the White House announced Biden had joined Community, a text messaging system in which celebrities can communicate with ordinary folks directly.

https://i.imgur.com/ShEzhJI.png

Biden’s team rolled out a Delaware-based phone number for the platform, encouraging everyday citizens to share their personal experiences with gun violence.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told The Post that Soldier of Fortune’s claim that the agency identified the cocaine’s owner and then briefed the president “is false.”

“The Secret Service does not know who transported the small bag of cocaine into the White House,” Guglielmi said.

https://i.imgur.com/YhrX7wz.png

“Our investigation could not lead to a person of interest and there were no discernible fingerprints or DNA that could be recovered from the packaging.”

He added: “Our source is the independent crime lab of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This institution is not affiliated with the Secret Service, or the Department of Homeland Security. The FBI is nationally accredited in this area of forensic science and they conducted a very thorough analysis of the packaging.”

Prior to purchasing Soldier of Fortune and becoming its publisher in May 2022, Keating worked as a reporter at the Washington Times covering security issues before moving to the Washington Examiner to become a senior editor.

“I noted the text because every other method I tried brought no results. I am getting a lot of good information from sources, but I have to give the White House / Biden the opportunity to respond,” Keating told The Post.

“I sent several text messages, as per their offering. Each time, it bounced back as undelivered. I published the screen-shot to show that I used the method the White House told me to use, and it didn’t work. I wanted to document that I made the attempt.”

On July 2, a Secret Service agent on a routine patrol flagged roughly one gram of cocaine in a storage locker inside the West Wing executive entrance, according to GOP lawmakers briefed on the matter.

https://i.imgur.com/qrwC9R1.png

The illicit drug was discovered one floor below the Oval Office and steps from the Situation Room — though administration officials noted the latter room has not been used for months due to ongoing renovations.

There were also no cameras situated in a position to capture footage of the offender, the protective agency told lawmakers.

The quickness of the public investigation and the inability — or unwillingness — of law enforcement to identify who brought illegal drugs into one of the most secure buildings in the world caused shock and outrage among Republicans and other Biden critics.

“I wonder where that cocaine came from, what happened?” former President Donald Trump riffed at a New Hampshire rally Tuesday.

“That was the quickest investigation I’ve ever seen,” he added.

https://i.imgur.com/dwKLqPh.png

Last month, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre snapped at a reporter from The Post who sought assurances that the dimebag was not the property of a Biden family member.

“You know, there has been some irresponsible reporting about the family,” Jean-Pierre said.

“The Biden family was not here,” Jean-Pierre stressed.

“They were not here. They were at Camp David. They were not here Friday, they were not here Saturday or Sunday, they were not even here Monday. They came back on Tuesday. So to ask that question is actually incredibly irresponsible, and I’ll just leave it there.”

The cocaine was discovered on a Sunday night, two days before the Independence Day holiday.

https://i.imgur.com/TkgdMpu.png

Biden had departed for Camp David the Friday before the discovery, accompanied by Hunter, who attracted suspicion after pool reports noted he had been spotted around the White House that day.

Cocaine is a Schedule II drug under the Controlled Substance Act and its possession, use and distribution are illegal under federal law.

Last year, the Secret Service also discovered trace amounts of marijuana in the White House.

The year before that, five members of President Biden’s staff were fired for past pot use, with one terminated aide claiming to the Daily Beast that the White House was “exclusively targeting younger staff and staff who came from states where it was legal.”
