A 14-month-old New York toddler was found dead after her grandmother left her in the back seat of an SUV for eight hours while she went to work after forgetting to drop the child off at daycare.

According to the Suffolk County Police Department, officers responded to reports of an unresponsive child at Redwood Lane near the Smithtown Long Island Rail Road station at approximately 4:20 pm Monday.

The child was rushed to Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities said in a release that the child’s 54-year-old grandmother was supposed to take her to daycare on the way to work but instead left “…the child in a car seat in a back seat” of her maroon 2018 Jeep Cherokee.

“Approximately eight hours later, the woman went to pick up the child at the daycare, located on Redwood Lane in Smithtown, when she realized she had left the child in her vehicle.”

Temperatures in the area reached a high of 83 degrees on Monday and The New York Post noted that the in-car temperature could have reached 123 degrees in only one hour.

Police have not yet announced if there will be any charges in the case.

Since 1998, more than 900 children, an average of 38 children per year, die from vehicular heatstroke, according to the National Safety Council, 53 percent of them because a parent or caregiver forgot them in a car. According to the council, this is the 14th child to die in a hot vehicle just this year.
