agreed, It was geared towards a 17 year old audience as well.

I read the 3 books...they're tame but have more violence/urgency than the movie

I love that film. The haunted WW2 submarine.

Anywho...

Just got back from the Wolverine. If you're a comic book junkie and you like the Japan storyline, you might like this flick. If you're a X-Men/Wolverine fan, you definitely will like this flick. It's better than the X-men Origins: Wolverine film. I enjoyed it. Stay for the after credits scene.

Neil Jordan film about 200 year old mother and daughter vampires. Beautifully filmed and full of mood. Too bad not much happens in terms of bloody slayings and vamp-like activity. More of an introspective monologue by the daughter about her life as an immortal. I liked the movie...Saoirse Ronan is a great actress

..and I think that Gemma Arterton is a total babe

Me and the g/f both thought that it wasn't going to have a 'happy' ending. We thought that when Pitt was in the lab with the deadly diseases that he was gonna pick the wrong one and it would be an uncurable disease. They would find out that his theory worked to 'disguise' themselves from the infected, but when he made it back to the other doctors, they would see that he injected himself with something nncurable, and although he gave hope for humanity, he ended up giving his life for it.

But instead it was a boring old happy ending. :|

Normally I would like this type of movie....epic Sci-fi, lots of effects, check you brain in at the door etc...

Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) has to be the worst actor on the planet and could not carry this one

It's essentially mech robots driven by men against Giant Monsters...unfortunately one of the key elements of how they drive the mechs ruined the entire movie for me.

The scenes were easier to follow than The Transformers, too bad I didn't care what happened to people because it was so silly

I was thinking of grabbing this but was skeptical about it, thanks for the input, I might just save the bandwidth.

PS, I liked Lone Ranger too.

Let me give you the premise, which turns out to be the most important thing in the story....not a spoiler as they explain it within the first 5 minutes of the film...

The mechs have to be psychically linked to the pilot. Why? Who knows, it's still a machine that reacts to controls. When one pilot tries to link to a mech, it causes too much sensory input so each mech has to have two pilots. The pilots must be linked to each other through a psychic process called 'the drift'. The drift is a series of shared memories from each person and they have to make sure not to linger on a memory when they're linked.

all that to drive a fucking oversize Tonka toy and throw some punches  ....if that's not bad enough, each time the giant mech takes...let's say a hit to his chest, the pilots react the same way as if they were hit in the chest.....buried under 20 tons of metal and shielding

it's one of those movies where the actors are taking it all so seriously, and the music is dramatic as well, when nothing of note is really happening or you just don't care...

It's the bi-polar nature of Kick Ass movies that bother me... seems like it's aimed at a younger crowd, then some pretty blue profanity and/or hardcore violence pops up.

I'm biased because I love Chloe Moretz as an actress and it was nice to see she brought her dirty mouth with her once again

The Conjuring

http://i.imgur.com/45OmwxW.jpg

Based on the story of the Perron family who moved into a house in 1971 and started noticing ghost-like behavior in their home. They contacted Ed and Lorraine Warren, the famous psychic investigators and demonologists for help.

To this day, one of the Perron daughters insists that most of the occurrences the movie portrayed did happen. I'm tempted to believe her as the family didn't get any movie or book deals in the early 70's, instead they were ridiculed and ended up moving.

The movie makes it seem like they lived there for only a few months, they actually lived in the house for years and then moved after things got a little too....strange.

I liked this film. It was well acted and the sets, costumes were pure 70's. There was a short series of scenes in particular that made me jump up and turn on the lights

The Warrens have investigated either 4000 or 10000 cases depending on what you believe....fake investigators or not, you have to think that they ran into some supernatural incidents over the course of their long career (they started in 1952). This may have been one of them.

Watched the original classic before seeing the new version of Carrie. I can honestly say that the new one was pretty good. I enjoyed this too.

They kept it neutral, except for about one line by Oswald's Mom that had subtle conspiracy theory overtones

I've read a few accounts about what happened to Abe Zapruder that day and his film. I guess it's like any JFK story, how much of it is true? In this version the FBI guy Sorrels was very protective of Zapruder and his rights. I've read that his film was copied, edited, switched and he got the edited version to keep. Just Zapruder's story would have been a fascinating movie on it's own.

I did like the part about color 8mm being very difficult to develop at that time and how they explained some of each reel developed would be lost in the process. The first viewing after they developed the original was a powerful scene...I can only imagine how that group of people felt while watching it.

and yes I don't believe that it was Oswald's shooting that killed Kennedy  ...that's a subject for another thread..

Deceptive Practice : The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay

http://i.imgur.com/I5u9VT5.jpg

A documentary featuring Ricky Jay. He's appeared in some David Mamet movies as well as guest appearances on a few TV shows. He has spent his life studying and perfecting close up magic, primarily using a deck of cards. This guy is a well educated historian on magicians from the past...

They show a few tricks, some of which are amazing. Near the end a woman describes a trick he performed at a restaurant with her as the only witness and it sounded incredible. She said it moved her to tears...

Only those with a keen interest in close up magic will want to watch this. They don't show how any tricks are done and most of the movie is spent talking about his influences growing up.

here's a pic of the guy...I believe he appeared on the TV show The Unit as a shady CIA contact.

King Kong Escapes (1967)

http://i.imgur.com/VJk6hA9.jpg

The plot - Evil mastermind Doctor Hu (Who) builds a metallic reproduction of King Kong to mine the invaluable Element X. The robot gets adversely affected by the highly radioactive element, so Dr Hu has to capture the real Kong to continue his mining operation under the ice at the North Pole.

Some observations without spoilers (that would reveal the awesome special effects throughout)

When you're on a nuclear powered submarine and the reactor core breaks down, best course of action is to surface and have a smoke topside

At one point the 3 lead actors are on Dr Hu's ship as prisoners....there's an Asian chick who's funding Dr Hu and she helps them escape. They're literally being hunted on the ship by the bad guys so she opens a secret door and motions them inside. It's her quarters and she pours them a drink, they all light smokes and she puts on a record featuring some groovy 60's music

Then Dr Hu's guards bust in and re-capture them...

Okay, now that I've seen this as well as Olympus Has Fallen, I can easily say that Olympus Has Fallen is the much better movie. Not that this one wasn't enjoyable, but it was full of a lot more plot holes, plus it tried to be serious AND funny which didn't always work (for me anyway, although I did chuckle a few times during it). There were a couple of big things in the film that stuck out for me when I was watching it that just made the film look stupid:

In the beginning-ish when the White House first gets taken, the VP wants to send in the US military ground forces to retake the White House, but the chick Secret Service agent brought up the whole deal about not being able to use the military on US soil and whatnot...but later in the film the new acting President order an air strike in to level the White House but nobody says a word. :wha:

Then, the supposed best hacker on the planet in the end can't remember how to unlock the explosive device he set up to protect himself while he was hacking the government computer system.

There were lots more problems, but those were two of the biggest that stood out right after first watch.

Still a decent watch though, as long as you turn off your brain and just sit back and watch it.

JFK: The Smoking Gun

(tinypic won't load the pic)

Interesting theory about one of the secret service guys in the follow car holding an AR-15 and accidentally hitting Kennedy. I don't believe that happened but the ballistics evidence is telling, implying that the 3rd shot did not come from Oswald and his trusty carcano bolt action rifle.

Probably more interesting is that CBS did a recreation using professional shooters in 1967. A fellow named Howard Donahue was the only guy to get 3 shots off with the carcano and hit the target 3 times.....on his 3rd try at the moving target.

Compelling because these guys were all expert shooters, without the stress/pressure/adrenaline of trying to hit the president in a one take try...

Also Donahue was a ballistics expert and his try at the recreation made him re-examine the ballistics evidence. Until the day he died, he went on record saying Oswald never did get the killing shot off, due to trajectory and the medical evidence.

Ok a few from me over the last week -

The Hunger Games, Catching Fire - Saw on the Big Screen and really enjoyed it. Time flew by which to me is an indication of a good enjoyable film. my one gripe with the film is how every character seems to pronounce Peeta differently! Peter, Peeetaarrr, petr etc etc!

At home through my DVD rental list i had -

Iron Man 3 - tbh not my favourite in the franchise i dont know what it was about this one but it lost something for me. I know humans super heating and melting metal etc is far fetched, yes i realise its a comic book adaptation, but when the mandarin starts spitting fire it was a bit like "ok im done with this now" for me.

Fast and Furious 6 - mehh I think the franchise has had its day. not even the old school Ford Escort could save this film for me.

Oblivion - forgot to take this off the list when i got back from the US, watched it on the plane. It wasn't any better the 2nd time round.

Friends with Kids - URGH!!! Almost as bad as what I hear twilight is! The mrs apologised for choosing it as soon as the credits rolled and swore it looked better in the previews!

And finaly, caught Airheads on TV the other day. I loved that film as a kid! made me laugh my ass off!!!! Still pretty giggle worthy now too :D

This movie was shot well, almost dreamlike in some scenes. One of the leads in particular displayed some good acting chops as turned into a rather unpleasant fellow.

Some scary bits and definitely some uncomfortable scenes. Could have been great if handled by a major studio...can't recommend for couples viewing as the story gets a little graphic

Considering some of the talent, this should have been a lot better. Trying to think of a word other than shite to describe.

CGI was used liberally for almost all of the magic, and when you have to use CGI for close up card shuffling tricks...all is lost.

There's a rule for both magic tricks and mystery/caper movies. You can't just pull out reveals when they suit the plot and this entire movie felt like that. Didn't care about the 4 leads and never bought them as magicians for a second. And the liberal use of the 360 camera made me sick, rather than entertained.

Chronicles a few years leading up the 1976 Formula 1 championship and the relationship between two of the racing competitors, James Hunt and Niki Lauda.

You don't have to be a gearhead to like this movie. The racing scenes are good, but it's primarily about the differences in the two men and how they approach a very dangerous career.

Visuals, music and the feel were spot on, gotta give Ron Howard another checkmark for a great movie.

* Movie was screened for some old Formula 1 drivers, they cheered at the end. Niki Lauda said that the movie was almost completely accurate and praised the actor Daniel Bruhl who played him. Same was said about the portrayal of James Hunt...right down to one of his interview quotes with Sterling Moss

I'll be the first to tell you that Koontz is a cookie cutter writer. His stand alone books are ridiculously similar to each other. His Odd books are pretty good, though. Definitely original. There's currently 6 or 7 releases in the series. Koontz's Moonlight Bay series is good too, although there are currently only two books in it.

my favorite of the three....Lone Survivor

http://i.imgur.com/wJbwbFP.jpg

True story of a Navy SEAL mission in 2005. Four SEALS were dropped off in the Kandahar mountains in Afghanistan to eliminate a high value target associated with the Taliban. Critics have said that the movie is too sparse and doesn't show much background of the four main characters. I say horse-pucky. The battle scenes were on par with the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan and demonstrated just how tough those SEAL guys are when shit goes sideways.

The movie is based on a book by Marcus Luttrell, one of he survivors of the mission. There's been a lot of negativity about the actual number of Taliban fighters they encountered. Unfortunately Luttrell has changed the number at least four times in various statements  Numbers range from 10 to 200 enemy forces.

It doesn't matter...these were four guys alone, a long way from home and every brown skinned person they see could be a threat...or just a peaceful native of the area..

I watched it with my son, 11 year old. Loves war movies. I think that's where he's headed in life...anyway, he said it could have been avoided had they just killed those three goat herders.
