Not as bad as reviews are making it out to be. The story is ok. Nothing groundbreaking in the cyberpunk genera. But that's what you get when you help define a genera and don't come out with a live action film until after everything you influenced has taken center stage and upped the ante 20 some odd years after you originally came out in a different format. It's not exactly like the original Anime or the Manga. It's a different storyline. Some of the iconic scenes from the original Anime made it into the film. The action and the visual fx were actually pretty good. It seemed to me that they cut some stuff out that made character interactions a little weird, jumbled, in the beginning. If they put an extended director's cut out on Bluray or DVD, I wouldn't be surprised. It seemed to me that there are some things that could be fleshed out a little better.

You can wait to see it, but you should at least give it a shot when you've got nothing else in the queue that you absolutely must see.

Kong: Skull Island

Oddly enough, the one or two f-bombs in the film did not come from Sam Jackson's lips.

The post-credit scene sets it up as being in the same cinematic universe as the Godzilla film that came out a few years ago. Cave drawings included Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. If they can pull off a decent film (by today's standards) with Ghidorah in it, I'll be really impressed.

Not a bad film, at least by monster movie standards.

I liked the first one better too. I wasn't so much let down by the plotline, because Ego has planned universal conquest in the comics several times before, but I am a bit meh about the changes that were made to the character. Ego's not a Celestial. He never was and never will be. He's also not Peter Quill's father in the comics. But whatever, I guess we won't be getting that deep into Marvel's cosmic stuff so they can pick and choose whatever to fit their needs. If Stan Lee signed off on it then who am I to argue? The movie moved fast. Apparently, there was supposed to be a ton of junk that they left on the cutting room floor. The first film seemed to open up more possibilities. We are confirmed to get Adam Warlock in the future, so there's that.

to me, this one was entertaining, but i wasn't as invested as i was in the first one. i'm not arguing anything against the film or what stan lee signed off on, more that i just left feeling sort of meh on this one. i don't follow the comics as much as you do, so the adam in the end was sort of like what now? we didn't really get that much of an introduction of the sovereign in the first place...

I've rewatched the Batman vs Superman Extended Edition film in anticipation of the Wonder Woman film being released this week (early reviews out are saying that it's a fantastic film, the best DCEU film released thus far). I've watched a few good movies over the past couple of months. I thought Alien : Covenant, Kong : Skull Island, Life, Passengers, Patriot's Day, Arrival were all good.

If you want to watch a slow, freaky movie about the JFK assassination, Jackie covers the immediate three days or so after the shooting. Doesn't give you any additional information about the day, but seeing what Jackie Kennedy went through and Natalie Portman's performance make it interesting.

I've watched that already, thanks. I didn't care for most of what James Files claims with the exception of two things...it was a mercury round that was used and the bite marks on the expended shell casing. In both cases he wasn't privy to the information yet mentioned it. Why would someone bite a shell casing and leave it there though? Doesn't make much sense after committing the biggest murder of the century.

The only evidence I need about the JFK shooting is the rifle that was found, the type of shot that had to be taken and the Zapruder film. They had to put three metal shims on the gun sight to get it close to accurate when testing, the time frame is too short for Oswald to get the three shots off, and the money shot takes half his head off from the wrong angle. I don't need to hear about the magic bullet theory, or how Oswald was a better shot than reported. All of the evidence is right there at ground zero. Then there's missing clothing, missing rounds magically found on a hospital stretcher, part of the initial autopsy that contradicted the FBI report. Yes the world was in shock, but that same world can't even agree on the audible number of gun shots recorded on the open mic of one of the cops. There's simply too much conflicting evidence to support three shots fired from a raised position behind the motorcade. One report said that Oswald didn't have any gunpowder residue on his hands or face and didn't even fire a gun that day. And why would Ruby put his entire life in jeopardy by killing Oswald in public? He wasn't the most altruistic of people

Oh lord don't get me started on Youtube conspiracy stuff......

i was invited to speak at two universities in japan (osaka and kyoto) and at a japanese gerontological society meeting. since i was there, i agreed to speak at an institute in singapore, which was about 6 hours by plane from japan. fortunately, it cost me essentially nothing for my entire trip by the time they paid for all flights and lodging and i got a couple honoraria for speaking.

i saw a couple cool historic castles in japan at inuyama and nagoya (although nagoya is recent since it was leveled completely during WWII). i also saw the merlion and botanical gardens in singapore. it was an awesome trip  the only thing that didn't quite go according to plan was not realizing my hotel in singapore would have a beautiful rooftop infinity pool. i didn't pack a suit, so i bought one from across the street. that suit is only to be used around people i don't know, it is super tight, super short, and leaves very little to the imagination. now i know how sometimes women feel getting checked out at the pool

Also the eventuality of what happened to everyone and the end of the movie. I don't mind dark but we just sat through two hours getting to know these folks. For what?

The lead girl....had no abilities or jam necessary to be the badass that her character was supposed to be. I guess I didn't buy her as the hero.

Excellent, accessible recounting of the Voyager I and II missions by the people who were/are there. Both probes are still going and some of the stats are amazing.

Voyager I travels at the speed of about 11 miles per second.

An AU is a unit of measurement that is equal to the distance from the sun to the Earth. About 93 million miles.

It took Voyager 40 years to travel 30 AU's. Approximately 2.7 billion miles or 30 AU'S to the edge of our galaxy.

When they were launched in 1977, a unique planetary alignment allowed the technicians to use the gravity of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune as slingshots for both probes.

By using this slingshot routine on one planet, they reduced the mission time by 20 years.

Approximately once every 2-3 years, a probe would come into contact with a new planet. Probes launched in 1977, Voyager II had last contact with Neptune in late 1989.

Both probes have entered interstellar space or the large, empty space between star systems and galaxies.

The Voyager probes had the same tech level as a common device in your pocket. Not your cell phone, the key fob for your car. Coupled with the fact scientists could delete and then rewrite flight and camera instructions as the probes went farther out into space, it's a pretty amazing journey.

I didn't like this one as much as the rest of the world. I guess some of the comics feature suits with tech, but to me it takes away too much of the original appeal of the character.

Also, Aunt May is not hot  and the Tony Stark interventions seem to muddle the story.

War for the Planet of the Apes

Critics are giving it great reviews, and again I find myself wondering why. Maybe I've become picky in my old age.

CG was fantastic, the ape expressions bordered on creepy they were so real at times.

Yet the story seemed lackluster and I felt they could have done so much more with the associated talent.

Again, nothing wrong with the movie. It was better than most of the current offerings.

Charlize Theron stars in this ultra-violent spy thriller set days before the Berlin Wall was taken down.

If you like fight scenes, this is your movie.

There's a fight scene in an apartment building that is 100X better than anything in the Bourne movies.

The plot is basic and just filler for the action. Charlize Theron is the female John Wick (she trained with Keanu and the same eight fighting coaches he used).

I liked it. It was funny in spots. They went a little heavy on The Immigrant Song, but I guess with the Norse mythology, it had to come into play sooner or later. I bet they paid a pretty penny to have that Zep song in the film though. Keep an ear out for "Pure Imagination" from 'Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory'. It's an orchestration and fits the scene that it's in, but it threw me for a second. It was kinda like, "Wait a minute... is that a Willy Wonka song I hear?"

Was it better than the other Thor movies? 2 - The Dark World? Yeah, sure. But that really wasn't going to be that hard to accomplish. The first one? I'm not so sure. Some people say yes, some say no. Maybe in some respects but not in others? Was it better than other "good" Marvel films. Not really, but it didn't stink in comparison. There's a lot of cool comic shit in there that you wouldn't get from other Marvel movies, and from an Earth-bound adventure, although they did make it to Earth in the latter beginning (Dr. Strange ftw!). But it's not gonna usurp The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Iron Man, the first Guardians, et al...

Go see it. You and your boy will enjoy it. Like with other films, there are some scenes in the trailers that didn't make it into the movie. Sif's not in it. Apparently Jaimie Alexander got tied up in scheduling with her TV show Blind Spot. I was slightly disappointed there. I kind of have a crush on her. She's hot.

And no, your mind is not tricking you, that is Matt Damon in a particular scene. You'll know it when you see it. It's funny.

Not sure why this movie is rated so highly. Interesting story though and an accurate portrayal of a cold, snowy landscape.

Slow and ultimately depressing.

Joss Whedon was involved in it, and the reviewers were saying that it was better than the earlier crap they put out. I wanted to give it a chance. I sincerely doubt I'll go to see any more of them.

And seriously, she may be eye candy, but Gadot sucks as an actress.

The kid that plays the Flash was pretty good, but the problem is you've already seen all the really funny scenes in the previews. The entire fucking movie was practically in the previews and the fucker was like 2 hours long. Furthermore, it's 2 fucking hours long and it still felt like some junk needed to be fleshed out a little better.

The whole time I'm watching Momoa, I'm thinking of the Big Bang Theory Halloween episode where no one wants to be Aquaman. It's not that Momoa was bad, I just couldn't get Raj out of my head saying, "Man, Aquaman sucks."

The dude who played Cyborg felt like the token black guy. I kinda feel bad about saying that because the guy is supposedly a good actor. But you can't help but compare him to Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Mackie, and/or Don Cheadle. They just had better material to work with.

There were several characters that were cut from the film and I'm really wondering why. How can you cut Willem Dafoe out of a fucking film? He makes the films he's in better!?! Maybe they'll release an extended Bluray or something with more scenes like they did with BvS.

Wait for the down-rent... or it'll probably be out on a streaming service sooner or later.

Oh well, Star Wars will be out in a few weeks. Palate cleanser.

This movie was one review away from a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and I can't understand why :|

Lots of eye acting and smiles and a reasonably interesting story. Certainly didn't merit the ultra high score or accolades it's getting.

Racism and some humor, something else lurking...it all seemed like I've seen it done better already in other movies.

It wasn't bad, but I happened to read something about Peele and he talked about all of this subtext for certain things...that were never shown

Don't want to disclose too much, but if you're talking about racial issues, you may want to include the scenes and not make us guess.

I own them and have read them several times. They're by far my favorite long form books by King, except for the way that Flagg died. In fact, the whole subplot surrounding that, to me, was King phoning it in. Other than the Dark Tower series, his short stories are better. Just my opinion.

For what the movie was, there should've been more to it. It didn't have to have everything from all of the books and related short stories, but it felt way too rushed. Should've been a trilogy, at the very least.

It

Good cinematography and for the most part the kid's casting was okay. Big Bill wasn't big and Richie wasn't as dynamic as I'd hoped for.

Not a spoiler - They've decided to call this chapter one and only show the time of the kids. I guess chapter two with the adults will come out in 2019.

Unsure on how I feel about this movie as I just reread the novel. By resetting the time of the kids it feels like they removed part of the soul from original story :-k

I just got back from seeing this myself.

I completely agree with you. How the hell did Leia survive that? Who the fuck was Snoke and where the fuck did he come from? And seriously, how is Rey that good with using the Force with presumably only a few days of training? There were a bunch of moments that were just way too damn convenient for my tastes. They're saying that this is the best Star Wars movie since Empire. I'm saying they need to get their fucking heads out of their asses and get their heads checked.

It's basically Empire and ROTJ, only they changed a bunch of stuff because they're trying really hard not to be blatant rehashes of the original trilogy, with just enough "Fuck You" thrown at the shit established in TFA. Oh and there are a lot of mopey feels... in fact, it's mostly how mopey Emo Vader feels about Luke.

the reviews from the reviewers are really high, i think the audience ratings are more in the 50-60% range, which is more than fair for this one. i am usually not so critical of movies as long as they entertain me, but this one really disappointed me :2cents:

Christmas Day...

On the Waterfront. Classic and an ATF.
Fences. Love August Wilson (playwright), Denzel and Viola are amazing. But a tough story and an unlikable lead character.
Life of Brian. What's to say. Classic Python satire.
Detroit. Could have been called Algiers, since the story was primarily about the police murders at the Algiers Hotel in the 1967 riots. I was expecting more of a biopic of the times and circumstances resulting in the rioting, not a drawn out docudrama about one, albeit huge, event. Lukewarm.
Room. Very good movie, very tough subject. I enjoyed it.

Saw STAR WARS.

I thought there were a lot of flaws. IT just didn't quite feel like an integrated whole....Characters were built up and disappeared all of a sudden, and other appeared unexplained. Gaps in the story line. No real satisfaction to any aspect. The same repeated scene of the Rebel ships put putting away while their asses get bombed (that was the story line right there ) A bit too much touchy-feely emotional pandering.

Still, I enjoyed the movie all up. I thought the most interesting character was Luke Skywalker, great job by Mark Hamil conveying the same annoying insecure, idealistic ( yet compelling) kid who keeps fcking up. Second favourite character was the lil droid :) Rest were all fine, just not great. 7/10
