KNOXVILLE — After being rescued from a makeshift hiding spot inside an East Knox County storm drain this morning, a Knoxville man readily admitted he dove inside the hole after burglarizing a nearby business and running from authorities.

But it still didn't account for why he was naked.

Knox County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to Lyons Creek Baptist Church, 9235 Strawberry Plains Pike, shortly after 10 a.m. on the pastor's report of a naked man seen running through the parking lot and then jumping into the drain, according to the sheriff's office.

David Bryan Ford, 50, eventually was freed from the hole by members of the Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad. He initially told deputies he was injured, but later refused all medical treatment.

Ford allegedly told authorities he had broken into a business earlier that morning. The sheriff's office confirmed that deputies responded to a reported break-in at Backstage Gifts, 532 Andrew Johnson Highway, less than a mile away about 5:45 a.m. They found glass shattered from a side door and a rear door kicked in, but nothing inside was stolen.

A white Ford pickup truck also was found parked next door to the shop, and may have been used to ram the side door, authorities said. The truck was seized as evidence, as investigators think it may have been used in another burglary.

The break-in is under investigation, and Ford was arrested on a charge of indecent exposure.

It was not immediately known why the man was naked.
