Video after video of guitar theory. I'm soooo lost. Stich method seems to be IMHO the most understandable. It's easy to find a lesson on a song, but how to learn guitar...so-so

Guitar theory is music theory without the piano and the piano's extended chords. You're limited by 4 fingers (5, if you thumb-fret the low E-string from time to time... it can come in handy with certain chords) and 6 strings as opposed to using all 10 fingers and 88+ keys on the piano/keyboard.

A lot of people try to learn the guitar without learning to read standard notation, but I think that's a mistake. A lot of well-versed guitar instructors do as well. I had the benefit of playing the trumpet before picking up the guitar, so I learned to read standard notation at a very early age. I also have B-flat stuck in my ear.


I'm on a thrash/death metal kick right now... as if you couldn't tell by the videos I've been posting. October = Halloween = Horror = vicious and brutal music. When Halloween gets closer, I'll switch over to my Halloween classical playlist.

My musical background is percussion. While I used to be able to read sheet music, not really anymore. I guess what I'm aiming for now, is to be able to play guitar, not play a song, if that makes sense, lol. I figure I have about 20 more years left.

20 more years to learn, in my life, lol. What I yearn to play is bluesy rock. I want to progress to being able to make my own sound. Tone wise, far too many to list, lol rock and metal is fun as well, though I have no desire to write in these styles. I've just waited too long, and don't spend enough time grinding the basics out, lol I loathe practicing progressions, scales, etc. Yet I know this must be done. My brother in law, and my best friend, have both played for 20+ years. Broadway in law is classically trained, friend is self taught. I learn from both of them. Just wish we were closerer. Friend used to live 20 min away when I got my first guitar, so it was nothing to go to his house and spend hours practicing songs. Brother in law tries to teach me more of theory, though, as he's said, he forgot a lot of it, and his playing has improved by spending time with me on basics.
As for me, at this point, I'm trying to wrap my head around 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7ths, root notes, etc.

Rock/Hard rock/Classic rock/Blues-rock/southern rock ---> learn to play the blues first. Listen to the blues in all of it's forms. Use your I IV V I chord progressions and keep in mind that whatever the I chord is, that's the minor pentatonic/ blues scale you're going to use to solo. The blues scale is just the minor pentatonic with the flat 5th thrown in as an extra passing tone. There are other scales you can use, but you don't want to complicate things early on. Your chords are going to be 7th chords, more specifically, dominant 7th chords. Learn how to play them in multiple inversions. Get used to fretting them and switching between them.

Just a side note: the rules of the blues breaks the rules of music theory. Generally, when you have a major I chord progression, you're going to be looking at the major scale in the key of the major I chord. The blues, and subsequently rock genres based on the blues, doesn't do that. Just keep in mind that the rules that govern the genres are different and if you're going to move into other genres, you're going to have to switch it up.

Heavy metal --- it depends. Some genres of metal follow the blues trend and some don't. Some follow more classical-flavored trends... strict music theory. Then there's the darker genres of metal that follow incomprehensible rules. I grew up playing thrash and death metal and I still can't tell you what the hell the rules of those genres are. :lol:
