Golf on the Moon? Yesterday's news, according to the Japanese branch of Domino's, which says it will have a branch affiliate on the lunar surface at an undetermined time in the future.

"We started thinking about this project last year, although we have not yet determined when the restaurant might open," said Tomohide Matsunaga, a spokesman for Domino's in Japan.

"In the future, we anticipate there will be many people living on the moon, astronauts who are working there and, in the future, citizens of the moon."

Maeda Corp., the contractor that Domino's Japan affiliate had reportedly tapped to fulfill its Moon franchise ambitions, says it will cost $21.7 billion to put a pizza joint on the surface of Earth's satellite, according to a Friday report in The Telegraph. About $7.3 billion of that investment will be required to transport 70 tons of building materials and pizza oven gear to the Moon via 15 rocket launches, the construction company said.

But never fear—Domino's is going to save about $2.4 billion on concrete by mixing the stuff on site with local lunar materials.

Why is Domino's Japanese branch drumming up all this P.R. buzz around such a farcical undertaking? According to The Telegraph, it's a delayed response to rival chain Pizza Hut's successful, if staged delivery of a pizza to the International Space Station in 2001.

I wonder how many pizzas they'd have to sell just to pay for the building.

That and the constant restocking of ingredients, employee turnover....there's no way they could make it economically viable unless the pizzas were 10000 dollars (for a medium, 2 topping)

He said toppings not droppings! Although droppings may be good if it's anything like Kopi Luwak coffee.
