Jesus Red that's a lot of apps!! You have them all loaded on the phone right now!?! Pretty good looking list.

My blackberry has BBM, which in my books counts for huge points... but beyond that... I have sportsmobile, facebook and poker

I have some apps that came preloaded on my phone, but I can't seem to delete them :wha:

Is there a way around that?

Example...my phone came with the Amazon mp3 app to buy and d/l mp3s to my phone. I'll never use it and it won't let me uninstall it

There are ways to go and delete the .apk manually from the system... if you want to get techy, I'll point you to some guides.

It can be... Not sure if you need to root your phone first or if you can just fly around with RootExplorer (can be found from Market) and delete stuff...

Almost positive the phone has to be rooted to remove the preinstalled apps, but my admin has been rooting adroid since they came out and said its not that difficult. I never do it myself, I just give it to him. But, I can point you to where he goes to learn as well if you want me to ask him.

Teh One Who Knocks
03-17-2011, 04:33 PM
Well, what's weird is, it let me uninstall some of the apps that were pre-installed, but there's some, like the damn Amazon app, where the uninstall box is greyed out and it won't let me do it.

Here's a n00b question....what is rooting a phone? :dunce:

PorkChopSandwiches
03-17-2011, 04:37 PM
rooting is what allows you "root" access to the os so you can make high level changes. Amazon is put on by Android so it cant be removed the same as apps put on by your provider.

What phone/android version is it?

Teh One Who Knocks
03-17-2011, 04:41 PM
It's a T-Mobile MyTouch 4G (HTC) and it's Android 2.2.1

Jezter
03-17-2011, 04:44 PM
Rooting is like giving yourself the "Administrator" privileges to your phone. You can do all that you want, down to the root of the phone. So this gives you the full access to your phone. Rooting is made very easy these days. There are plenty of "one click" solutions to it and all you need to do is follow a few steps. At least for Samsung there are plenty of those. I can look around for MyTouch devices. Is it made by HTC or...?

That doesn't void any warranties or anything, does it? Or does it really matter?

And yes, it's an HTC :)

Also, I have a question about an app...I grabbed the free version of the AVG anti-virus for Android. Is it worth having or is it just a waste of phone resources?

I would imagine that if you do something to your phone after rooting, that requires you to take it to the service, it would not be under warranty anymore. I am not sure about the policy though. Porky might know better. Rooting can be undone too, though so you can hide your tracks.

If it is running constantly, then it is waste of resources. If you are not downloading a ton of stuff all the time and installing stuff randomly, then it is waste. In my opinion.

This is what I believe too.

That is because some programs are ad supported. Some come without ads, some don't. Paid apps don't have ads.

I'm reviving this old thread because I've just inherited my nephew's HTC Dream. Ancient in Android terms, but I intend to use it for a few purposes...

- Speedo for my car - until I can get the car fixed
- Organizer
- MP3 player - maybe
- NOT as a phone, so how do I stop it from looking for a signal? Airplane mode works on later phones, but on this one it kills a lot more things

Any suggestions for me? Any words of widsom, Lance since you've had yours for a while now?

Were you trying to get it from the Marketplace or was a 3rd party site? I downloaded it from the Marketplace app on my phone, or you can grab it online at the Marketplace:

Now I know why my nephew gave me the phone...it's an HTC Dream and unless I "root" it, I can't get Android 1.6 (currently has 1.5) apps and WinAmp is one of those.
