Prosecutors this morning said former hand surgeon Michael Brown threw two heavy vases and a humanitarian award at his wife as he chased her through their Memorial area mansion in an early morning fight last year that ended with Brown being arrested for domestic violence.

"The defendant became unchained," Assistant Harris County District Attorney Nathan Hennigan told jurors in opening statements before state District Court Judge Jim Wallace.

Brown, 54, was charged with assaulting Rachel Brown in August 2010.

Hennigan said the fight ended with Brown being "taken down" by his body guard after twisting his wife's arm behind her back. "She turned around and could see a crazed look in his eyes," Hennigan said.

Attorneys for Brown said the vases and the Joanne Herring 2010 Humanitarian of the Year award were broken as the couple pushed each other around in mutual combat.

"She was enraged," attorney Dick DeGuerin said.

DeGuerin said Rachel Brown screamed expletives at her husband after hearing a late night voicemail in which he seemed to be flirting with another woman.

"And then it was on," DeGuerin said of the chase and fight that was witnessed by the couple's three children.

DeGuerin said the voicemail was left after Brown's phone accidentally dialed his wife in the early morning hours of Aug. 13, 2010.

Brown faces felony charges in the assault on his fourth wife because he admitted to beating his third wife in 2002.

Brown faces a punishment ranging from probation to 10 years in prison, if convicted.

Brown's carpal tunnel clinic, the Brown Hand Center, is well-known in Houston for television commercials in which Brown appears with Rachel Brown and several children.

The clinic, which also has locations in Phoenix, Dallas, Austin and Las Vegas, employs several surgeons. The business remains open despite Brown's medical license being revoked after he tested positive for cocaine in 2006.

Not saying she deserved this, but she went into this marriage knowing he had beat his last wife, and she is most assuredly a gold digger.

Since he fixes carpal tunnel syndrome, think he wore a preventative wrist brace while he was smacking her?

doubtful. That would have shown pre-meditation and ruled out a temporary insanity plea.
