Authorities say an 85-year-old Augusta man is recovering after being accidentally shot in the face by a woman who was aiming for a possum.
Police told the Augusta Chronicle the man was trying to remove a possum from a chicken pen when he was accidently shot in the face by an acquaintance.
Richmond County sheriff's deputies say they found Alfonsia O'Bryant shot once on the left side of his face around 4 a.m. Saturday.
Evelyn Smith, a friend of the man, told officers they had intended to shoot a possum that had gotten into a chicken pen.
Authorities said she fired a .32-caliber pistol at the possum but the bullet struck O'Bryant in what was deemed an accidental shooting.
Sheriff's officials said she then shot the possum and called police.
