Teh One Who Knocks

After paying £5 entrance fee, drinkers could buy a pint of beer for 20p and a shot for just 10p
Shocking scenes as students go crazy and drink till they drop

A girl uses her handbag as a pillow as she lies in the gutter, apparently trying to sleep off the drink.
Another teenager is lucky to acquire only a bruised ego after he drunkenly trips against a kerb and hits his head on a bin.
Everywhere there are young men and women staggering into the road, or propping themselves up against lamp posts and walls or slumping on to the pavement.

This was the scene – as inevitable as it was unedifying – after organisers of Two-Bob Tuesday ignored the concerns of alcohol abuse campaigners and went ahead with their rock-bottom price drink night.
Under the promotion at the Showbar in Warrington all drinks – including shots and half-pints of beer – were 10p each after paying a £5 entrance fee.
This lasted from the 10.30pm opening time until midnight, after which prices rose – though only to 50p.
The promotion was targeted at the hundreds of students newly arrived in the town for freshers’ week. The scenes of scantily-clad and often semi-comatose revellers spilling on to the streets will add to concerns that a generation of students is being sucked into a cycle of alcohol abuse by aggressive drink promotions.

The scenes follow the publication last week of shocking pictures taken in the centre of Cardiff of drunken revellers. Polish photographer Maciej Dakowicz captured the nocturnal scenes as a portrait of life in Britain.
More than 20 police officers were on hand around the Showbar to try to prevent the mayhem getting too out of hand after so much drink flowed in so little time.
Even when the Showbar closed at 2.30am, many drinkers simply moved on to other venues which stayed open until 5am, including a group who left chanting ‘Let’s get ******* wasted!’

The promotion had been defended by the Showbar’s marketing manager, Derek Load, who claimed other bars in the town had even lower prices.
‘We’ve been unfairly criticised,’ he said. ‘We are aiming the night at students during freshers’ week to welcome them to the town. We don’t force them to drink.’
The event – its name refers to a pre-decimal two shillings likely to be regarded as ancient history by most of those present – attracted around 500 revellers.
