LOVELAND, Ohio -- Dozens of teens, including many honor students, were reprimanded this week for wearing yoga pants to Loveland High School.
"We're trying to make a point that we all just want to go to school, we want to get our work done and be comfortable and just want to go home," said senior Olivia Legg, who was among 17 students who spent Thursday serving in-school suspension.
Dozens of other students said they were sent home or forced to change their clothes.
School administrators think the soft, clingy pants, which are popular among yoga practitioners, are too revealing for class, but students disagree.
"I feel like if I wore jeans and a cute shirt, I'd be more distracting than what I'm wearing now," Legg said.
The student handbook doesn't specifically address yoga pants or leggings, but "revealing clothing" is prohibited, and students are not permitted to wear clothing deemed to be distracting.
"I think it's just like wearing sweatpants," said junior Blake Freeman. "It doesn't distract us."
The students said they don't wear the pants for attention but because they're comfortable.
"The thing is, jeans are the same way, like regular jeans, they're the same way," said student Jasmyn Fuson. "Even some dresses are the same way, so I don't see what the big deal is on the yoga pants."
School officials declined to comment on camera, but the superintendent released a written statement.
"We are committed to providing an appropriate educational environment while respecting the students' freedom of expression," said superintendent John Marschhausen. "The district will be reviewing the dress code policies and procedures that led to this event and will provide more defined expectations in the near future."
Until then, students don't understand what the fuss is all about.
"Being banned from yoga pants and telling us they're revealing and unacceptable is just not right," Legg said. "They go down to your legs; they cover everything."
