Apple Announces Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs Has Died

6:43 p.m. CDT, October 5, 2011
CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Apple announced Wednesday that former Apple CEO Steve Jobs has died.

Jobs stepped down as CEO in August, saying he could no longer handle the job.

In January, Jobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor, took his second medical leave of absence in two years, raising serious questions about his health and the leadership of a company.

Jobs, 55, has been instrumental in turning Apple into the dominant producer of portable music players, a leader in the smart phone business and, with the iPad, the inventor of a new category of modern tablet computers.

He is Apple's public face, its master showman and its savior since he returned in 1997 after a 12-year hiatus to rescue the company from financial ruin.

Investors in recent years have pinned much of their faith in the company on Jobs himself, sending shares tumbling on every bit of news or rumor of his ailing health.

"Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company," said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple's Board.

"Steve has made countless contributions to Apple's success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple's immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration."

He had a form of pancreatic cancer and at one point got a liver transplant...just goes to show you that you can be one of the richest guys in the world and that shit still takes you :(

Even if you didn't use or like his stuff, he was a pioneer in marketing and ideas :thumbsup:

Sorry, but he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003, did absolutely nothing about it disregarding dr's opinions, then finally in 2004 had surgery for it.

This shouldn't have come as a surprise.

Just my opinion.

The cancer he had is one of the worst u can get, it has one the lowest survival rate and even caught early enough not many can have the op because of where it is and how difficult the op is, hell ur on a survival rate to just survive the op..

For pancreatic cancer:

For all stages combined, the 1-year relative survival rate is 25%, and the 5-year survival is estimated as less than 5% to 6%.
For local disease, the 5-year survival is approximately 20%.
For locally advanced and for metastatic disease, which collectively represent over 80% to 85-90% of individuals, the median survival is about 10 and 6 months, respectively. Without active treatment, metastatic pancreatic cancer has a median survival of 3–5 months; complete remission is rare.

I understand all that, but he didn't just refuse surgery, he refused ALL forms of possible treatments, which is asinine and reckless.

In the early days, he was very instrumental in developing personal computers in competition with M$. You could say the same thing about smartphones. If nothing else, he helped pushed competitive technology to new heights. Who knows where we'd be if he was never around to create Apple with Wozniak.

Bunch of hypocrites... Jobs didn't do shit for philanthropy or the world. Said he'd give when he could afford to, and never looked back. Shut down apple's corporate philanthropy, used near-slave labor in China, shot down Buffet and Gates asking him to pledge his wealth after he died.

I'm not saying I'd do any of that better than him... but all these bleeding-heart hippies who think Jobs is a hero to the world didn't bat an eye when ~150 students and their parent in Somalia died hours before waiting to see if they'd be given scholarships. One dude in a turtle neck dies and you'd think the world was ending on Facebook. And besides, Jobs wasn't an inovative genious, he just found a way to market inferior products at grossly inflated prices. I will say though, for that, he deserves some awe.

Still, I feel like I need to research Jobs more, because I just know he wasn't the guy all these people are making him out as...
