A Queenstown mother has admitted falsely telling two prestigious schools that her daughter's rival applicant was a lesbian with a sexually transmitted disease.

The 53-year-old cleaner was granted continuing name suppression yesterday when she admitted in the Queenstown District Court two charges of misusing a telephone.

The summary of facts said the woman posed as an Invercargill nurse when she phoned St Hilda's Collegiate and Columba College in Dunedin on August 2.

Her daughter had applied to the schools, as had another Queenstown teenager.

Posing as a sexual-health worker, the woman told the schools the victim was in a lesbian relationship and had a sexually transmitted disease that needed treatment.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Ian Collin said there was high demand for places at the schools and the woman made the fake calls in an effort to get her daughter accepted ahead of the other teenager.

Lawyer Phena Byrne said her client was fit to plead after a remand and reports under the Mentally Impaired Persons Act.

Judge Kevin Phillips convicted the woman and remanded her for sentence on November 28.

The victim and members of her family were in court.
