Costs more to run it that way and will probably keep me awake tonight with it cycling on and off but better than the alternative I guess.

Yes it's true and can prevent freezing.
Fortunately I have a full basement which is heated and the only exterior wall with pipes aside from the outdoor spigots (which are shutoff and drained for winter) is to the kitchen sink and they are run in the cabinet, not the wall.

Many homes around here have an unheated crawlspace which is very likely to have pipes bursting when temps get like this.

Partially it's expansion but mostly it's moving water is less likely to freeze and the water deep underground in the city supply lines is still well above freezing, keep that slightly warmer water running through the cold pipe it's less likely to freeze.

Although the snow has tapered off into just flurries here and there, the temp has yet to rebound. It's a beautiful -13° (-25C) outside. The snow it seems has stayed up in the mountains where they are predicting 2 to 3 feet by the end of the day Saturday.

Snowstorm #1 is done, I still have to finish cleaning up my driveway and walks in preparation for Snowstorm #2 This weekend and possible Snowstorm #3 the following weekend. Many of the cities and suburbs have run out of road salt and their contract with the out of state supplier is not working out well at all (deliveries weeks behind schedule). Good thing they went with the cheapest bid, Eh?

At least you guys use road salt still, here in Colorado they use liquid de-icer which is nothing but shit. It only seemingly works (and just barely) when the temp is between like 30 and 31 degrees, anything colder and it turns to ice and makes the roads more dangerous. Not to mention the coating of brown slime it leaves on your vehicle that is almost impossible to wash off. :wha:

That's one thing I do miss about living in Vermont, they don't fuck around in the winter and they know how to take care of the roads. Well, at least they used to when I lived there, I guess it could have changed by now.

I have never ever been anywhere that deals with snow the way Colorado does. Half the time you would think this was Alabama or Mississippi the way they freak out every time it snows here.
