Officially hit 100° (38C) in Denver yesterday for the high, first 100° day of the year (officially). For some unknown reason, they take the 'official' Denver temperature reading at Denver Int'l Airport, which is like 20/25 miles outside the city, it's completely ridiculous.

http://i.imgur.com/bg5OQds.jpg

I circled where actual downtown Denver is and the airport is up in the upper right corner of the map. It's always hotter in the city than it is out in the middle of nowhere where the airport is.

My lawn went dormant this summer from lack of moisture...almost every lawn is brown on our block. My Dad would not be impressed.

There's only one lawn that looks green (bright green) and it's the hot single Mom across the street. She waters her lawn daily. One night she put her sprinkler out after dinner and let it go until dark. I wonder who pays her utility bills? I can't afford to do that :|

Teh One Who Knocks
09-08-2017, 03:03 PM
Same thing here...we started the summer with a little more than 2 months of no rain. Then we had a period of about 10 days where it rained about every other day and it was nice, but then the rain dried up and it's been like this again for more than a month. We can't afford to water the lawn daily here either, it's in rough shape.

Hal-9000
09-08-2017, 03:11 PM
Yesterday, the 'greener grass' company did it's fourth and final treatment on our lawn. We're supposed to water it after the application to seal it in.

That's what I'm doing right now, because the best time to water in hot weather is supposed to be the morning. Our water bill is tied in with our electricity and recycling/garbage fees so it's the big utility bill. Bill was 188 with me here alone in July and not watering the lawns...so I'm fucked in terms of bringing the dormant grass back to life before winter. Either you water it heavily every two or three days in extreme heat or you don't do it at all.

Hal-9000
09-08-2017, 03:45 PM
I don't think I'm going to attempt to water the lawns after all. It's supposed to be 28-30C for the next few days and I can't water it daily in an attempt to revive the lawn.

Have to rely on Mother Nature, sorry Dad.

Hal-9000
09-11-2017, 08:24 PM
Yeah we get a lot of tree shrapnel after wind storms because of the amount of foliage in our neighborhood. We had a summer storm this year where winds reached 60km/h (about 37 mph) and a section that was over 10 feet came down from our front tree. It was sitting on the street right in front of our house so I took it to the park behind the house and left it there ...at night

He was doing his ignorant snow relocation thing and I said in a friendly voice - So YOU'RE the guy who makes it tough to drive on the front street!

He gets pissy and says - How long have you guys lived in Canada. Other cars will come by and pack it down for you. I can't believe you complain.

Unknown to me, one of my other neighbors had just had a fight with him over the same thing

The logic - We never get snow removal on side streets. If the weather stays cold, the snow stays there for months. Often becoming undrivable. And this Supreme Jackass has the nerve to claim we need to accept the shitty driving conditions....when he moves his two cars for the sole purpose of removing ALL snow from under them!!!

Long one short - he makes a shitty situation 10 times worse and it doesn't have to be. Throw your fucken snow on the lawn like other humans you mouth-breather!

If I was in better shape, I would go back at night and push all of that snow back into his yard

that's the shitty irony...we can get ticketed if we don't clear our walks within 24 hours, yet the city doesn't even clear 50% of the city roads. And we pay them taxes to do it.

Same here, the city says that as soon as it stops snowing, you have 24 hours to get the sidewalks in front of your house cleared or else they can fine you. But, like you, because we live in a residential neighborhood (considered a tertiary road) under no circumstances will our road ever get plowed, not even if there was 4 or 5 feet of snow. Good thing we pay property taxes to the city and county :|

That's crappy, Hal. What that dude is doing just makes it harder for everyone.

One late fall evening I was coming into my townhouse, and the guy 4 units down from me says "hey, can you help us get my concrete countertop in? It would have been Me, him and 2 gangly looking teens. I said "no" because it looked like an accident waiting to happen, I had just finished a round of physio for my legs and the piece of concrete was the 10' x 4' countertop - not just a thin top, but a few inches thick - which should have had a decent crew to bring it in. I said "no, I've just finished physio". He looks mad, grunts and goes away. "Bad planning on your part doesn't make an emergency on my part" ran through my head.

A month later it starts to snow. Dude has the contract to plow the culdesac, he's a general construction guy and has added snow removal to his skills. Where does he leave all the heap of snow? In front of my van - I'm a unit in from the left - couldn't be anything but intentional.

My wife needs to get to work, so I back up the 4 feet I had, and nail the throttle. BOOM - right through the snowbank with zero damage to the van, but an absolute mess of the snow. The strata prez sees this and fires the dude from snow removal. A few months later he breaks up with his girlfriend who owns the townhouse and I thankfully never see him again.

On topic -- it's hovering around the freezing point here - and we had snow last night - just 2cms but enough to cause traffic mayhem. The roads are clear now.

Gawd I hate this season :|

December 8 - 6:00 PM
It started to snow.
The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven.
It looked like a Grandma Moses Print.
So romantic we felt like newlyweds again.
I love snow!

December 9
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape.
What a fantastic sight!
Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world?
Moving here was the best idea I've ever had!
Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again.
I did both our driveway and the sidewalks.
This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again.
What a perfect life!

December 12
The sun has melted all our lovely snow.
Such a disappointment!
My neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas.
No snow on Christmas would be awful!
Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again
I don't think that's possible.
Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14
Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night.
The temperature dropped to -20.
The cold makes everything sparkle so.
The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks.
This is the life!
The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again.
I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way.
I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15
20 inches forecast.
Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.
Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels.
Stocked the freezer.
The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out.
I think that's silly.
We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16
Ice storm this morning.
Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt.
Hurt like hell.
The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17
Still way below freezing.
Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for 5 hours.
I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm.
Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her.
Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her.
God I hate it when she's right.
I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20
Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.
More shoveling!
Took all day.
The damn snowplow came by twice.
Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey.
I think they're lying.
Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out.
Might have another shipment in March.
I think they're lying.
Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me.
I think he's lying.

December 22
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August.
Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss.
By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel.
Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying.

December 23
Only 2 inches of snow today
And it warmed up to 0.
The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning.
What is she, nuts?!!
Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago?
She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24
6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.
Thought I was having a heart attack.
If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel.
I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been!
Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

December 25
Merry freaking Christmas!
20 more inches of the damn slop tonight -Snowed in.
The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil.
God, I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel.
The wife says I have a bad attitude.
I think she's an idiot.
If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

December 26
Still snowed in.
Why the hell did I ever move here?
It was all HER idea.
She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

December 28
Warmed up to above -20.
Still snowed in.
The BITCH is driving me crazy!!!

December 29
10 more inches.
Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in.
That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

December 30
Roof caved in.
I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass.
The wife went home to her mother.
Nine more inches predicted.

December 31
I set fire to what's left of the house.
No more shoveling.

January 8
Feel so good.
I just love those little white pills they keep giving me.
Why am I tied to the bed?

I could give you the spiel about how wrong that is, but I can tell you've probably never had to live in a place where it's below zero during the day for weeks and months, you have to shovel your sidewalks every day for months, sometimes twice a day, and you can't drive on some roads because there's too much ice and snow on them.

For instance, a person can fall asleep at night outside in the summer and not die. We have nights here that get down below -35C with the windchill factor and your skin freezes within 120 seconds. Hypothermia sets in after 10 minutes...frostbite on extremities like your nose and fingers and toes develops in under 10 minutes.

So yeah, what were you saying about sweating?

 memory time

There's a park behind my house and it had an old school slide with two large metal support poles.

One day a kid licks the pole, tongue is stuck bad and a crowd gathers. Me and a few friends were there too.

Some kid went to get her Mom. A few minutes later the Mom comes running out with a pot of boiled water. I kid you not, we could see the steam when she was in her front yard.

Mom comes to the pole and another adult asks her - Louise or Lesley or Lucy, (can't recall her name)...just what are you going to do with that?

She ignores him and tells the kid on the pole to brace himself. Same adult guy and two older kids start screaming NO NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!!

She stepped back and someone eventually got a washcloth, dipped it into the water and used it on the pole above his mouth and eased his tongue off with some minor damage.

Paramedics showed up and everything, it was a pretty big deal

To this day I often wonder how traumatized the 10 or so kids would be (not to mention pole-kid) if she went ahead with her plan

I'm driving 1.5 hours out of town today for an overnight event, getting there will be no problem but it's supposed to start snowing late tonight/early tomorrow and continue all day. If the prediction holds it's gonna be a real fun drive home tomorrow.

I don't envy you. I have winter tires on and had problems driving down our front street last night (ice and ruts still there covered in new snow).

We tend to clear our highways pretty well, so usually the out of town driving is less trying than the in-town trips.

Fook me we're getting pounded. I'm so tired of shoveling snow and it's only February.

Sky is overcast gunmetal gray, the flakes coming down are huge, it's below -20....how can anyone say winter is desirable? They obviously haven't shoveled snow 3x a day :|

My snow tires/car do really well in the weather we typically have. Usually don't get multiple snow events one after the other so the road crews get time to catch up between. From what was predicted we've been lucky so far. Right now I can see my lawn out there, we had two days above freezing after the last snow.

I wish...my front street looks just like the pictures I posted in November ffs...we never get our streets cleared and commutes that usually take 10 minutes go up to an hour or better.

 Yep, this is about an hour after my last pictures and if it keeps up for a couple more hours...the guy across the street will be up to his wheel wells in snow.

We get this weird choice...either shovel the snow three or four times a day when it's not so heavy, or wait for day and try to move 1000 lbs of it

fuck I hate this season

I'm lucky enough my little snowblower is still hanging in there. been running rough and it takes periodic choke adjustments to keep it running but it still beats shoveling!

They closed Deerfoot Trail this afternoon because of weather, accidents.

Deerfoot is similar to a long freeway that runs north/south in our city. The speed limit is 110 km/h on most of it.

Today is the 20th straight day now without any precipitation in Denver. And the last (measurable) precip was a dusting of snow (.9" total). Another brush fire broke out yesterday in the southeastern part of the city, luckily it was TOO windy yesterday so they got it under control fairly quickly. But at the rate we are going now, we need more than 200% of normal precipitation in March and April just to barely bring us up to average for the season.

That was probably the storm we had roll thru here the other day. Only got ab out 3 inches here, but it was a really wet and heavy snow.

Yea, probably. Pretty good winds all day. The snow amounts were very spotty here though, Even a few miles away they hardly got a trace. We can tell when Lake Erie is no longer frozen, it picks up moisture and dumps it sporadically around the region.

Raining like a motherfucker outside. Made the drive to work almost scary because there's a lot of standing water on the road and I'm about to the point where I need new tires on my truck. Couple of times this morning hit some standing water and felt the truck want to start to go.

Weird spring storm that came through yesterday. First it was pouring down rain, then it started to snow the hugest snowflakes I've ever seen, then back to rain, and now it's going to be sunny and 70° today.

One of the ski areas that is still open got 19" of snow from that storm yesterday.

Had to turn the a/c on for the first time this year. Denver set a new official record of 90° (32C) yesterday breaking a 27 year old record. It's the 4th earliest it has ever hit 90° here and it was warmer in the city than out at the airport where the offficial temp is recorded. On the drive home from work, the thermometer in my truck hit 92°.

It's too early for this kinda heat. :|

And after that day of setting a new record high, it's been rainy, overcast and in the upper 50's low 60's all weekend and into today so far.
