They've upped the forecasted temp for tomorrow to 92° (33C) which if it hits that, it would be the hottest day in May ever for Denver. :| I have a bad feeling that it's going to be a long and hot summer here this year.

Meanwhile, only one hour west of me they're under a heavy snowfall warning - ONE METER of snow with avalanche warnings

This happens because we're on the eastern side of the mountains and get a phenomena known as Chinook winds (really warm winter temps), as a bad weather system rolls through the mountains farther west.

Night before last it was 10C degrees, quite warm for the season. And then yesterday it was sunny, it rained, then sleet, then freezing rain, then snow, then thunder...then a thunder snow storm in southern Alberta (very rare) and lightning strikes.

Hal-9000

Oh they've been really wrong too

The summer of rain. I recall one summer where every Friday afternoon at around 3 or 4 pm it rained. We typically don't get much rain.

This went on for about 8-10 weeks in the summer and our weather people would never predict it. So the weekdays would be really nice, then like clockwork the weekend hit and it rained.

Guys were taking days off in the middle of the week to do lawnwork etc.

Eventually the weather guy said - Forecast says clear and hot, around 25C degrees. But we know it's going to rain. Plan for rain.

Teh One Who Knocks
01-29-2019, 04:21 PM
They're constantly wrong here. Much of the blame is put on the mountains since we're right at the base. But still, to be wrong SO often, it's to the point of why even bother having a weather section on the newscast anymore

Oddly though, the one thing they do seem to predict correctly more often than not is the wind. :-k

Hal-9000
01-29-2019, 05:01 PM
It's the same situation here. They can totally blow the snow prediction in terms of volume, but they know when it's going to hit to the minute sometimes.

I think we have similar climates in terms of constant change because of being near the mountains. We're on the lee side (east) of the mountains. The BC side stays warm and we get the cold.

I want to shake people like that because in conditions where there's ice, and then snow falls on top of that, and you're on any sort of incline...not many vehicles make it up.

She figures the thing should have icepicks on the tires  I suspect since she was born in Florida, lived in downtown NYC never driving there and then lived in LA for 10 years, she's never experienced any sort of winter driving scenarios.

I Can tell you she's full of shit too, it hardly snows here anymore at all  And even when it does, the roads are usually clear by the end of the day because of the sun and the traffic on the roads. On Monday when we got that snow? It came in quick in the morning, dumped the 6 to 12 inches before lunch (depth varied depending on what part of the city you were in) and the roads were a mess, accidents everywhere and stupid drivers getting stuck. But by the time I went home at 2:30 in the afternoon? The highways were just wet, all the snow was gone off of them

I thought as much. When she started complaining to the point of getting out of her lease on a 2019 AWD Terrain...there are worse vehicles for sure.

I hate it here because of our shitty snow clearing city workers. We've had two big dumps this winter and during each we've had to shut down busy, internal roads within the city. That NEVER used to happen when I was a new driver years ago. We get warned about the snow usually three days in advance, the entire city prepares, except the snow removal crews.

Remember I told you about the Edmonton workers coming to help our crews. They have over 100 more vehicles and people and they live in the same sized city :|

I remember one day being at work getting a winter snow warning, everyone goes home early except me. I stop at the nearby gas station to work, pick up two chocolate bars, an extra pack of smokes, a drink and fill up with gas. Things I would never usually do driving home.

3 hours and 10 minutes later I'm stuck in traffic, chocolate bars and drink gone, smoking cigarettes like a guy facing a firing squad and I'm thinking - I may not make it home from work tonight

As people in Minnesota and NE America are finding, cold weather just tires a person out and seems to last forever.

Cold for here this morning. Roads weren't in much better condition, but at least there's a lot less traffic in the morning at the time I come in. Was still snowing off and on during the ride in. Down to -3° (-19C)....when it gets cold like this, it makes me miss this kinda weather. This time of year back in Vermont (at least when I was growing up there) there would always be a stretch in either late January or early February when the more extreme cold would set in. We'd go between a week and two weeks where the HIGH temp for the day would be below zero. That's when you feel alive, when you walk outside at -25° (-32C) and take a deep breath and immediately start coughing because the air is so cold.

Denver is becoming very 'pussified' when it comes to weather here anymore, and it's because of all the Californians and Mexicans and Texans that keep moving here. The ones that couldn't identify snow if they were holding it in their hand. More and more they call school off and close roads and government offices close early. The electronic signs on the interstates are always warning people about snow that's on the way days in advance and that there will be 'winter driving conditions' coming.

I know I joke about my time living in Vermont, but in 20+ years of living here, the WORST snowstorm we've ever had here doesn't compare to what we dealt with during winter in Vermont. And that state just kept on going. I can count on 1 hand the amount of snow days we had during my whole 6 years of Jr High and High School.

I have a kind neighbor who has a snowblower. You don't see them too much in the city. We're getting threatened again about parking on the streets (snow routes) and the fine for not clearing your walks starts at 250 dollars this season. They have the gall to put this on a commercial after no one can drive throughout the city and we have another 200 accident snowfall this past weekend.

I was teasing you about my little dusting of snow compared to your 80 feet.

My snowblower is just a little rubber bladed thing, it's good for 6 inches at most. My neighbor has a big beast, I'm always thankful to him when we get a big storm. He usually does all my walks (corner lot so more sidewalk) I will spend a couple hours beating my little blower through the drifts just so I don't have to pick up the shovel. It was a cold weekend for Denver, it's been awhile since it was like this. Yesterday was the coldest day in March in almost 60 years here. The high for yesterday was 6° (-14C) and it snowed almost all night Saturday night and most of the day yesterday. Was out shoveling yesterday morning at -3° (-19C) in a sweatshirt (granted, it was a heavy warm sweatshirt) and could see the neighbor a few houses down come out and start shoveling and he was wearing a parka with the hood up and a scarf on.

Cold start to the week as it's 0° (-18C) but it's supposed to be almost 60° (16C) by Friday. With rain thrown in. So yay, all that snow in the yard is going to become a swamp starting midweek. :|

Oh, and as for the weather this past weekend, people that are from the south or warm weather states or fucking Mexico need to stop moving here :| They had been forecasting this 'storm' and cold weather for most of the week, and this time the weather people were actually pretty close to right. It started a little later than they predicted, but it did come through the city and last most of the weekend.

Now, because of all this (and believe me, I think it's the meteorologists job to make every coming snow sound like The Snowpocalypse) I needed to stop at the store on the way home from work last Friday afternoon. Both Sam's Club and the Safeway were busier than I have ever seen them on a weekday afternoon. People buying everything up. It's absol-fucking-lutely ridiculous. And it was even worse on Saturday afternoon when I had to run to the store for a couple of things. Half the shelves at Walmart were empty. :|

It's absolutely bizarre, they were forecasting snow (3 to 8 inches) and cold weather for the weekend. Not like they were saying we were expecting 3 feet of snow and -50° temperatures for a week FFS.

We've been in a cold weather alert for days. The ambient weather looks fine at around -22C but constant wind chill is driving it down to past -30.

Sunny.

March must be nice in your parts. Here it can be one of the worst winter months, usually for snow.

Cold. Just fucking cold.

It's so ridiculous here, it's been "cold" here for about 5 days now, give or take (below freezing the whole time with a few morning at or below zero). This morning when I woke up one of the news alerts on my phone was from one of the local news apps saying starting today we'll be having a "much needed warm up".

People here have no idea what cold is. It gets into the single digits for temps here and they are calling it 'frigid'. If we don't see the sun here for more than 2 days because of clouds, they whine like we live in the Pacific Northwest. :shakehead:

We get that at certain times of the year, not very often. I recall one brutal white knuckle drive home from work where it was like bumper cars. No embellishment, I drove 10 kmh (-2 miles per hour) all the way home and all the streets had a black shiny glaze on them. I looked down from this hill towards our zoo and two city buses were sideways and every car was bumper locked going that direction. It looked like a post apocalyptic scene where cars are sitting abandoned on the freeway (TWD). It was a miracle I didn't hit anything but a few curbs going home. Bought my first set of winter tires the day after, not that they would helped much.

In eastern Canada they get brutal ice storms that knock out power for weeks and make travel near impossible.

Yeah, those are the same ones that used to affect us....it would hit Quebec and upstate New York and Vermont. Worst one I recall when I lived there was, no lie, about a 1/4" of solid ice coating everything. It took approximately 3 days to get the ice off your car if you wanted to go somewhere. If you were stupid enough to want to drive in it. :|

How about this latest shitshow. We've had extra cold temps for weeks now. Water mains are bursting all over the city. In one neighborhood in our SE, the water has frozen vehicles and objects on the lawns in place under inches of water. Resident on the news feels the city should help chip them out (it looks brutal) and says they pay civic taxes to ensure we have working, running water.

It's fine if it's a slow melt, but we never get that here....it keeps going back and forth and back and forth. I had to dig trenches in the back yard a week ago to get the standing water to drain off. And just when the ground was starting to dry out, we got 8 new inches of snow this past weekend. And now because it has warmed up (and windy, the wind multiplies how fast it melts), it's going to turn the yard into a swamp again :x

Do the dawgs do their business back there?

Yeah we have so many false springs it gets annoying. I think I put the drain pipes on and off five times last year. Definitely not a trial.

Yeah, the dogs go out back, but the yard is picked up daily, even in the snow. Although we can't always find the buried stuff, that shows up as the snow melts.

And of course when the yard is a swamp, the dogs get all filthy in the back yard because of the mud :x

I just looked at the 10 day forecast, more snow and cold coming again next week. So we'll go for Swamp of Sorrow round 5 this winter :x

Reason I ask is a friend of mine had a large shepard and he did his thing back there. One year we got so much consistent snow he let it lapse and then of course the weather went from -10 to + 20 overnight.

And yes, that IS as much fun as it sounds
