It did hit 80° (27C) yesterday and now the city and the eastern plains of the state are under a blizzard warning through tomorrow. We've already hit the high for the day and the temp is supposed to drop steadily during the day down into the 30's. And it's supposed to start with rain, then a downpour/thunderstorms with a chance of hail turning over to heavy snow and howling winds. Yay. :|

We were in the low 70's for 2 days. It's 36 this morning, wind chill 26. We'll only get side swiped by the storm but it looks nasty. We'll get some snow and rain and then 50MPH winds. You, my friend, are in the brunt of a bomb cyclone that has been called potentially historic and devastating. And weather people are not prone to over hyped hyperbole!

It's hard to see in that pic. The power company has been replacing the old poles in our alley for the past three weeks.

My line on the upper right is strung so tight the connection under my eaves troughs is touching it.

When you look at the city line in the alley it's attached to, the one in the alley in between the poles, it's actually pulled in about five feet or bowed inwards towards my house.

I just ran out and had a long chat with one of the workers telling him my concerns and he's going to try to 'cut me some slack'.

:| I didn't laugh at his joke as the setup doesn't look very safe to me.

He explained they have to replace the old power poles (they've been there since this house was built) because the 'comms' guys (internet/phone providers) are going to be restringing every line in the city with fiber optics. Apparently one of the comms guys got hurt or killed because the old lines were sagging and too close to each other.

So the power guys have to replace all of the old posts. Guy today told me the old posts were in great shape. They're at least 55 years old, pretty impressive.

Teh One Who Knocks

I'm surprised they are wiring the fiber optic lines in the air like that instead of burying the cables :-k

I'm surprised they are wiring the fiber optic lines in the air like that instead of burying the cables :-k

It was weird. Last fall my internet provider comes by and asks me to sign permission to switch the lines to fiber optic. I don't have to buy the service, but all lines in the city will be changed.

She said they would be switching every line by Christmas. No problem on my end, do your thing.

I tell the power guy that today and he says that's exactly why they're here changing the poles. Apparently when the comms guys starting changing the lines to fiber optic, someone got hurt badly because the way the old lines were strung. The comms guys have still yet to switch over to fiber, because now they have to wait for the power guys to switch the poles first.

I couldn't even imagine if they had to dig underground lines across every alley or up to each home. It would be a nightmare. Even watching them replace the poles I was impressed. They don't drop or cut any lines and reattach them while planting the new poles and they pull the old ones out.

No man we had almost spring for a few weeks. I've already done power raking and aerating on the lawns. Was just raking leaves the day before.

It was one of those combo storms Lance had a couple of weeks back where they called it a weather bomb or whatever. We call it a bad storm

I couldn't see out of my windows last night and there was zero visibility at the airport and they grounded planes. Lots of snow, rain and ice being carried in on strong winds. Just about lost the lights a few times.

The only times you ever see mushrooms growing around here is in the spring if we get a crap ton of late snow/rain. Once the dry season starts (mid-May usually through September) nothing but weeds grow because it's so hot and dry.

The trees weren't doing so good when I was leaving for work this morning. We have a small cherry tree out front that we planted only a few years ago, it was completely bent over touching the ground from the snow. And there's a big ash tree out front that had multiple branches hanging very low and/or touching the ground. I cleaned them off as best I could this morning. Wife texted me later on and said the big maple out back lost a couple of big branches because of the weight.

Wife texted me later on and said the big maple out back lost a couple of big branches because of the weight.

That's the worst. We had a huge snowstorm this past fall in September when my sister was visiting. 20 cms (over a foot) and at that time of year every tree has full leaves.

It was so bad that throughout my neighborhood large branches from huge trees broke off and blocked some streets and alleyways. The city had to go around and clear streets.

I feel for you. And any plant with leaves on it that gets enough snow coverage may break or go back into hibernation.

Teh One Who Knocks
05-21-2019, 04:06 PM
Yeah, pretty much everything has fairly substantial leaves on it now. I can only imagine how bad the lilac bush in the backyard got it. :| Plus we have some other young trees that have only been in the ground a few years now (peach tree, crab apple tree, and a regular apple tree), so I'm hoping they all made it okay.

Hal-9000
05-21-2019, 04:13 PM
Try not to worry. Survival has a lot to do with frost under the ground. Your area has been very warm so any frost under the ground is gone.

Snow dissipates faster when the ground cooperates.

Fun fact - we had a very high number of water main breaks this past winter. Reason was they measured the underground frost level that normally sits at 6 or 7 feet. Last winter was so continuously cold the level was measured at 9 feet.

Once that underground frost goes trees and plants become stronger. Also it's not only temperature that melts snow, it's the amount of direct sunlight on the snow.

Teh One Who Knocks

Broke an 89 year old record low this morning. It got down to 30° (-1C) this morning after the snowstorm the night before. Slowly supposed to start warming back up again as the week goes along.

Lost a couple of decent sized branches off the tree in the backyard, but in the grand scheme of things, we got pretty lucky.

You can have all our rain. We have had enough for the year. It's been raining at least 5 days a week for three months. The flooding is soon gonna be declared an emergency. Lake Erie is 33" above normal. Here on the island a housing development has been under water for more than two months, the roads, power sewer and water lines are starting to disintegrate. Usually this is one of the hottest weeks of the year.

August is usually worse for us in Denver, but July can be pretty bad. So far though, it hasn't been nearly as hot this summer as it has the last several years.

Our Calgary Stampede usually takes place from about the 5th to the 12th of July and the weather is typically really hot throughout. Since the midway is so large and all of the rides/attractions are on asphalt, some days down there can get real uncomfy to the point of people passing out.

Mix : Canadians, midway food, rides, extreme heat (for us) = barfarama city

That's usually what it's like when me and my buddy go to the Mile High Nationals (drag races) at Bandimere. It's in the foothills and there is NOWHERE to hide away from the sun. It's absolutely miserable...and we're usually there for a good 8 to 10 hours.

Last year they had video of little kids hanging off the misters (large sprinkler-like gates) because one day reached over 30C.

You could almost hear their tiny, limp dishrag pleas - No mas papa, no mas :|

Dry heat is a cake walk, when your triple digit teens and the humidity is 60% its brutal.

August is the worst for use typically. We are having a pretty steamy summer so far.

It looks like that storm is heading westward. Coastal Louisiana and Texas need to keep their eyes on it. If it takes on official storm status, it'll be called Barry.

And it's as hot as a Southern Baptist hell outside. 92°F but it feels like 110°. It's that damn humidity.

And now it's raining like cats and dogs, and that came out of nowhere. 5 minutes ago, it was bright and sunny.

Yep, spent most of the afternoon working off the back of the service truck. I have GOT to get me one of those umbrellas like welders use. Just dont know where I'd store it on the truck. I'm getting too damned old for this. Couple more years and I'm gonna look for a different job... "Welcome to Walmart..get your shit and get the fuck out!" Think that'd work? Haha

97° (36C) yesterday and it didn't even cool off that much last night. It was still 78° (26C) when I got up at 3 this morning. Supposed to be more of the same today.

Sunny and mild, maybe a thunderstorm later.

Heard about that storm in Greece that killed seven people. Didn't sound like much rain, just a lot of wind and destruction.

It's a weird story or maybe I'm not getting all of the info. Storm descends out of nowhere in Greece without any appreciable amount of rain...lots of people die instantly.

I'm pretty sure most were hit by debris.

*yeah, 20 minute storm and one couple rolled over in their camper due to winds and died.

It got up to 103°F today, 107°F with the heat index.

Until y'all hit those temperatures, I don't wanna hear y'all complain about how hot it is outside where you're at.

With every 1,000' in elevation you go up from sea level, your exposure to UV radiation goes up between 8 and 10%, so until any of you are getting blasted by extreme radiation just by leaving your home and going outside, I don't want to hear you complain about how hot it is outside.

Am I doing it right?

I grew up in New England, 100% humidity and temps in the 90's is nothing I haven't experienced before.

You have not been down here in July and August. Take a vacation, come down here, spend 30 minutes outside in the mid afternoon when the temperatures are above 105°. Then talk to me about what hot really is.

I'll engage anyone in a debate about cold. I know for certain on the other side of things I couldn't handle much extreme heat. Used to love it when I was younger but not as adult.

Our air is so dry here that when I go somewhere with actual humidity, I drip. Not sure I could last in 100F heat with humidity.

Still I will always argue that a human can last longer in extreme heat than in extreme cold. Frostbite and hypothermia are real things.
