And that being said, they are predicting snow 80 miles west of here and closer in the foothills during the next few days

Like I said in another thread, Arapahoe Basin ski resort was open here last weekend still

Sure, it sits above 11,000' in elevation, but still, skiing in the middle of July.

“It's not the heat, it's the humidity!" Have you ever heard someone say that on a warm, muggy day? As you'll see soon, there's a lot of truth in that statement.

To understand humidity, you first have to realize that there's water in the air all around you. “But I'm not wet!" you might say. That's true. Most of the air around you has water in the form of a gas called water vapor.

Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. Too much or too little humidity can be dangerous. For example, high humidity combined with hot temperatures is a combination that can be a health risk, especially for the very young and the very old.

Humidity plays an important role in our daily weather. Without water vapor in the air, our weather might be like the weather on Mars. Could you imagine life without clouds, rain, snow, thunder, or lightning?

When you hear weather forecasters talk about humidity, you may hear them talk about two different terms: absolute humidity and relative humidity. Absolute humidity is the amount of water vapor divided by the amount of dry air in a certain volume of air at a particular temperature. The hotter the air is, the more water vapor it can hold.

Relative humidity is the ratio of the current absolute humidity to the highest possible absolute humidity, which will depend upon the current air temperature. Relative humidity is the term weather forecasters use most often.

A relative humidity of 100% means that the air can't hold any more water vapor. It's totally saturated. When this occurs, it can rain. In fact, the relative humidity must be 100% where clouds are forming for it to rain. However, at ground level where the rain lands, the relative humidity can be less than 100%.

So how does humidity affect us on a hot day? Humans are sensitive to changes in humidity, because our skin uses the air around us to get rid of moisture in the form of sweat. If the relative humidity is very high, the air is already saturated with water vapor and our sweat won't evaporate. When this happens, we feel hotter than the actual temperature.

Likewise, very low humidity can make us feel cooler than the actual temperature. This happens because the dry air helps sweat evaporate more quickly than usual.

If the temperature outside is 75° F (23.8° C), humidity can make it feel warmer or cooler. A relative humidity of 0% would make it feel like it's only 69° F (20.5° C). On the other hand, a relative humidity of 100% would make it feel like it's 80° F (26.6° C).

So what's a comfortable humidity level? Studies have shown that we tend to feel most comfortable at a relative humidity of around 45%. Some people use special machines called humidifiers (add humidity) or dehumidifiers (remove humidity) to keep indoor humidity at a comfortable level.

A tropical depression moving up the Florida coast is supposed to swing by this way in the afternoon. It should stay out over water, but the bands will reach in.

It's currently 76°F and sunny, with a humidity of 93% (!!!). There's a 90% chance of rain sometime today (probably in the afternoon when that tropical depression swings by).

Thunder storms here tonight. Fingers crossed for no new forest fires. It's been a very mild summer so far. Our province (and their budget) needed a break from the past several years of insane fires. Last year something like 3 million acres burned here alone, people were wearing masks around the city. One of the big ones that was 120,000 HA is still burning now almost a full year later as a 'holdover fire' (roots/undergrowth smoulder over the summer and it flares up the next year

No, but it looks like we've got a system a little southeast of Florida threatening to become a tropical storm right now.

Current forecast has it becoming a tropical storm, missing us by a hair, then going offshore a bit and then becoming a hurricane.

It's gonna dump some rain on us. I haven't started the ark yet.

Do you let your faucets slow drip during a hard frost?

Inside? No, never have and I actually never even heard of that until I moved out here. Most apartment complexes put up signs telling residents to do that when it gets cold and I never understood why. I grew up in a state where it was routinely -10° to -30° and sometimes even pushing -40° at times during the winter I had never heard of anyone ever doing that.

DemonGeminiX

If your pipes are exposed and uninsulated, say like in your garage, you're supposed to keep water flowing through them to keep them from freezing.

Teh One Who Knocks
10-07-2019, 01:50 PM
It never gets that cold here long enough. Sure, we might get some below zero weather here occasionally, but it never really even stay cold enough, long enough for the frost to even get that deep into the ground. If the frost line here goes deeper than 6 to 8 inches, I would be completely surprised.

The water heaters of your apartment building were probably in a room that had no room temperature regulation. That's how it was in the last apartment complex I lived in. It was a side room on the building only accessible from the outside.

I'm sure they either buried the pipes and/or insulated them in the crawlspace of your home in Vermont. Your water heater was probably inside the house as well. That's how my childhood home was in New Jersey. We didn't have to worry about it up there either. We didn't have a garage where the furnace and water heater was located like I do down here in Georgia. If there's a hard freeze coming down here, then I have to let a faucet or two drip while the temps are low. That usually only happens in January and February.

I think it has rained almost every day this month. Between that and the sun only being up from 815-4pm it's pretty miserable. Better than snow I guess but man if I could move south for the winter I'd do it in a heartbeat. Seems like every year I grow less and less tolerant of these dark ass winter days where you go to work in the dark and come home in the dark.
