Wind storm coming through today. The weather alert goes from 8 AM this morning until 5 PM this evening, with the worst of it supposed to be between 10 and 2 today. Sustained winds of 40 to 60 mph with gusts of up to 100 mph.

Wind is howling now, probably sustained at a good 40 to 50 mph. One part of the state has already reported a wind gust of 112 mph. The whole building is shaking.

So Monday morning the temps went from high 60's to low 40's. The winds that came with that took down two trees on our road that both took out power lines, one broke the pole with the transformer. Needless to say, we were without power for about 15 hours.

That's actually a good repair time for a small power company in the mountains, we were expecting at least 2 days out. Luckily the sun came out and helped keep the house warm, I fired up my generator and had a few essentials running. (tv, internet). If it would have stayed out I could have fired up my Aunts generator as well for some heat, appliances, etc.

If you ever decide to go for it I'd recommend a dual fuel. There are many benefits to running off propane, the top being you don't have to worry about always keeping fresh gas on hand.

Mines just a little 2000W portable. It's enough to run one 15A circuit. Yesterday I had the TV, a few lights, Roku, sound bar, Wifi, and a portable heater (on Medium). I made a quick "suicide" cord (double male ends), killed the breaker and plugged it from the Gen into a house outlet. Even had a couple wall switches powered up.

My Aunts Generator is 5000W? It's enough to run the necessities if wired into the panel. Could potentially run the furnace blower (gas furnace), fridges, microwave, etc. Currently I bought a thing that goes through the wall, has a 220v plug on the outside and splits that to two 120V circuits (3+3 outlets) on the inside of the house.

We lucked out. Power flicked off 6 times but came right back. The winds weren't nearly as bad as most other places locally, we think the mountain behind us blocked the bulk of it. Ended up with about 5 inches of snow, we're still snowed in but at least have power.

We got hammered yesterday. That rare time I can tell women I got 9 inches.

Dug out my 2 cars and my neighbor starting at 4 am. By the time I got home, it was all buried again. Dug out then went back out the do extra work on the sidewalks and parking lot (yes, I rent, but I want it better than the landlord does it).

The neighbor I have mentioned before. Veteran, in his 70's (guessing) and has progressing Parkinsons. He tries... pushes snow around but can't really do it. But he gets himself to the gym every day. I clear his car, shovel and salt around it when I am home to do it. I never say anything about it, he never says anything about it. Just talk sports and let him maintain his dignity.

It's so funny to watch the weather on the local news here when we get these (rare) cold snaps here. While I have become acclimated to the climate here because I've lived here almost 30 years, when I was living in Vermont, this stretch wouldn't have even been considered that cold. I remember some times in the winter, usually either in January or February, we could have a week or longer where the temp wouldn't even get above 0° and the lows at night could be anywhere between -10° and -25° and when I lived there you got used to it. Here, whenever it drops below 32° people all act like we're living at Ice Station Zero or something.

https://i.ibb.co/Yyj2jds/Georgia.jpg (https://ibb.co/b2d1dv9)

You'll get snow up there. You'll get dumped on if you're in the mountains. It'll be colder than where I'm at. And it will feel colder, even if we're experiencing the same temperature (due to elevation). I grew up in Pennsylvania/New Jersey, so I know what your winters will look like. Georgia's a big state so it's like a tale of two climates. I'm the furthest southeast you can get in the state, right on the coast in the lower right hand corner, so I'm in a more temperate/subtropical climate. The elevation's way lower down here. It's basically sea-level, a swamp that's been converted to residential land. I might see a slight dusting of snow once every 10-15 years or so. It might get down to 30°F or lower in the day for a few weeks in January, February, and/or March, but it's been few and far between lately. It'll get down into the 30s pretty regularly at night in the winter. It comes in cycles though. It's been warm in the winters before, then got cold, then warmed up again. If I was up in or above Atlanta, I'd see more winter-like conditions during the winter. Seasons exist in the northern parts of Georgia, but not so much down where I'm at. I don't recall ever seeing temperatures below 25°F down here.

Believe it or not, I miss winter. I really don't own much in the way of winter clothes, because I'd never wear them down here. If I had to go up North during the winter, I'd have to go clothes shopping, and the clothes would go unused after I came home.

It's interesting, and actually quite cold winters by Australian standards. Not much different from Melbourne in winter.

Florida is just to the south and Miami has an average high of 77 F in winter. That's sub-tropical. So again, just another 500 miles to the South and a huge change. I think the US must be the most diverse country I've ever been in terms of weather. All you're missing is true tropical.

Technically, we do, if we consider the state of Hawaii and other noncontiguous territories. The Caribbean Islands we hold as US Territories are a true tropical climate: The US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Pacific territories Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands are tropical as well. They are all part of the United States, with Hawaii actually being a state itself, so we've got tropical too.

I saw a short explanation on this from a meteorologist. Something about a rare-ish type of storm caused by the great lakes being unseasonably warm, and causing this historic thunder-snow concentrating in a very small area. I was in Toronto until Friday night 200km away and they got barely anything!

Pretty much any time before the lake freezes it can generate large amounts of snow. Add in winds that are going the "right" direction (ENE) or blowing along the length of Lake Erie picking up moisture, the snow will build up at the end of the lake where Buffalo sits. If the winds blow WSW Toledo, Ohio will get pounded but that's more rare.

I'm west of Cleveland, East of Cleveland typically gets a lot more snow than us just because of the shape of the lake and typical wind directions for this time of the year.

It's just dumping snow, we're getting 1-3cm an hour tonight. Vancouver doesn't get much snow so we don't have the equipment to handle this  I'm excited for the chaos.

They've revised the temps down for Thursday. Now the high is supposed to only be -2° (-19C) and a low of -14° (-26C) and to make it even better, it's been windy as fuck for over a week and that isn't supposed to change, so they're warning of wind chills as low as -50° (-46C). Yay.

I've never been anywhere with temperatures approaching that low in my whole life.

I used to deal with it every winter when I lived in Vermont (the cold temps), but that kind of cold is abnormal for here, especially the wind chill getting that low. That is extremely dangerous to be out in.

It reminds me of Iowa or somewhere.

Stay safe.

We got almost a foot of snow overnight! It's a shit show. This is as much as we normally get in a whole year all at once and Vancouver spends less than basically any Canadian city on snow contracts/equipment because 99% of the time it's not worth owning the equipment I guess. I'm 1 block off a major road and haven't seen a plow all day down my street  Turning into ice now since it's -10C.

Do you drip your faucets when you get a hard freeze? :-k

I never even heard of that until I moved here, I dunno if it's because in Vermont they insulate the plumbing better or what, but ever since I moved to Colorado, they recommend doing that every time it gets really cold. So we did do that last night.

They don't insulate pipes down here in GA at all. Even if you were building a house and you asked them to, they'd refuse to do it. I drip when it's forecast to get below 33°F.

I can kinda see not insulating the pipes well in the south, but in a place like Colorado where it gets cold every winter, granted, rarely it gets as cold as it is now, but it still gets cold, that they would insulate the plumbing like they would in any northern winter state.
