Commanders for Libya's transitional authorities say they have captured ousted leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

The reports came after transitional forces claimed control of Sirte, Col Gaddafi's birthplace, following weeks of fierce fighting.

Col Gaddafi is said to be wounded. There is no independent confirmation of the reports.

The colonel was toppled in August after 42 years in power. The International Criminal Court is seeking his arrest.

"He's captured. He's wounded in both legs," National Transitional Council (NTC) official Abdel Majid told Reuters news agency.

"He's been taken away by ambulance."

AFP news agency quoted another NTC official, Mohamed Leith, as saying that Col Gaddafi had been captured in Sirte and was "seriously wounded" but still breathing.

A soldier who says he captured Muammar Gaddafi told the BBC the colonel had shouted: "Don't shoot!"

The BBC's Caroline Hawley in Tripoli says although the capture is unconfirmed, ships and cars have been sounding their horns in the capital and guns are being fired in celebration.

Earlier, NTC commanders in Sirte - about 360km (220 miles) east of Tripoli - said the city had been liberated.

"There are no Gaddafi forces any more," Col Yunus al-Abdali told Reuters. "We are now chasing his fighters who are trying to run away."

There was no confirmation from the NTC leadership.

But fighters in Sirte celebrated by firing in the air, and chanting "Allah akbar" ("God is great").

Interim government forces had been facing heavy resistance from snipers in the city, and used heavy artillery during its offensive. Thousands of civilians have fled.

SIRTE, Libya – NATO confirms it hit a convoy of Moammar Gadhafi's loyalists fleeing Sirte as the city fell Thursday, but there are conflicting reports whether the ousted Libyan leader was in the convoy or possibly killed or captured.

Col. Roland Lavoie, spokesman for NATO's operational headquarters in Naples, Italy, says the alliance's aircraft Thursday morning struck two vehicles of pro-Gadhafi forces "which were part of a larger group maneuvering in the vicinity of Sirte."

NATO officials, speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance to alliance rules, said the alliance also could not independently confirm whether Gadhafi was killed or captured.

Thats what everyone thought but he always was unpredictable, you cant fault his courage and the way they fought in Sirte for the last few days but his belief that if they held out the Libyan majority would rise up and defeat the NTC? Fruit loop to the end.

From the sounds of it the NTC moved in more specialised urban fighters over the past few days, they took the centre of Sirte and an armed convoy made a run for it towards the south that was then hit by either a US predator drone or a French airstrike, possibly both.

Daffy was found afterwards hidden in a storm drain and taken off by NTC fighter with leg wounds, if you watch the video he's being held up but seems lucid and scared. Theres a crowd disturbance, the sound of shots then he's loaded onto the flatbed unconcious and blood covered with a bullet hole to the head. His son Mutassim the interior minister and the guy who was defence minster apparently also got the same treatment, his eldest son Saif is apparently still missing while Khamis is reputedly dead in a NATO airstrike about 2 weeks ago.

Frankly if he'd made a run for the desert or gone into exile 2 weeks ago he might have either been allowed to vanish into obscurity or been followed to go on trial at the Hague, after 2 weeks of intense urban fighting where the casualties have been unneeded and appalling and the NTC fighters have seen friends and comrades killed in a war that should have ended when Tripoli fell it was pretty obvious they werent going to give him the easy option.
