FRANKLIN, Va. - A Halloween display of a skeleton hanging by a noose has caused controversy in a small Virginia town.
According to a report on WVEC.com, a Franklin lawmaker and some residents say the decoration is racially offensive.
"You can show black people a noose and it's gonna' immediately, immediately slavery registers hanging, lynching," said Councilman Greg McLemore according to the report.
But the homeowner, Michele Tono, say the display is nothing more than a Saw Puppet Mask based on the horror film character.
Tono also says this is the third year she has put up the display.
"It's the principle. Take the noose down. Change it to a knot. Change the black wig to a blond wig. It's the principle," said McLemore according to the report.
Police say there is nothing criminal about the display.
Tono said she will not take it down.
