Police said an apparently drunken man who passed out in a stranger’s apartment went to jail after punching the resident as she tried to help him to the door.
The Gainesville Police Department arrested Ryan Markey Wells, 20, of 4024 NW 30th Place, on a charge of battery during a burglary.
The incident happened in an apartment in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street, according to an arrest report by Officer Shawn Barnes.
The woman told police she arrived home around 1:55 a.m. Friday to find a stranger passed out on the living room floor.
The woman said she woke the man and told him he was not welcome in her apartment.
In the arrest report, Barnes wrote that the woman “helped the defendant (Wells) up to his feet and was giving him gentle guidance as he was having problems finding the door due to his intoxication.”
It was while the woman was directing Wells toward the door that he turned on her, Barnes reported.
The woman said she fell to the floor after Wells shoved her and that he then began to punch and kick her in the head.
Witnesses told police they ran into the apartment when they heard the woman screaming.
Barnes said Wells was wearing only his underwear when officers arrived, “had no explanation for his action” and was “only babbling due to severe intoxication.”
The woman was left with two swollen eyes.
