Little background. I've worked with Jamaican folks and countless East Indian people and we used to go to a place that sold REAL home made patties for lunch

I should know better  And why the fck they only put 9 in a box? :-s What if you got two or four or six people in the family?

Edible, but can't recommend. 2.5 sections of toilet paper out of 5 :hand:

Very Superstitious: 13 Sailor Superstitions

Ahoy Matey!

Seafaring is one of the world's oldest occupations, so it is only natural that in times where inexplicable events have happened, superstitions have played a major role in providing reasons for their occurrence.

The uncontrollable nature of the sea has given way to many a nautical lore, each one as curious as the next. So plunge in if you dare, and discover 13 common sailor superstitions.
1. No Bananas On Board

Aside from their peels causing many comedians to trip and fall down, bananas have long been thought to bring bad luck, especially on ships. At the height of the trading empire between Spain and the Caribbean in the 1700's, most cases of disappearing ships happened to be carrying a cargo of bananas at the time.

Coincidence? Perhaps. Another theory suggests that because bananas spoiled so quickly, transporters had to get to their destination much quicker. Fisherman thus never caught anything while bananas were on board. Another danger caused by monkey's favourite fruit fermenting so quickly, was that in the heat of the storage hull, bananas would produce deadly toxic fumes.

A final theory on the perils of bananas at sea (though there are tons) is that a species of deadly spider would hide inside banana bunches. Their lethal bite caused crewman to die suddenly, heightening the fear that banana cargo was a bad omen.

Many boaters continue to avoid bananas at sea, some even avoiding banana smelling sun tan lotion.

2. No Women on Board

Women were said to bring bad luck on board because they distracted the sailors from their sea duties. This kind of behaviour angered the intemperate seas that would take their revenge out on the ship. Funny enough, naked women on board were completely welcome. That's because naked women "calmed the sea". This is why ships' typically had a figure of a topless women perched on the bow of the ship. Her bare breasts "shamed the stormy seas into calm" and her open eyes guided the seamen to safety.

3. Son of A Gun

Male children born on the ship were referred to as "son of a gun" because the most convenient place to give birth on deck (if you weren't too afraid of having a woman on board) was on the gun deck. Having a male child on board was a sign of good luck.
4. No Whistling on Board

Mariners have long held the belief that whistling or singing into the wind will "whistle up a storm".

5. Red Sky At Night...

"Red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky in the morning, sailors take warning" the old saying goes. A red sunset indicates a beautiful day to come, while a red sunrise indicates rain and bad weather.

6. Deathly Lexis

At sea, some words must be strictly avoided to ensure the ship and crew's safe return. These include obvious ones like "drowned" and "goodbye". If someone says "good luck" to you, it is sure to bring about bad luck. The only way to reverse the curse is by drawing blood, so usually a good punch in the nose will do.

7. Beware of the Lurking Shark

A shark following the ship is a sign of inevitable death.

8. Welcome the Lurking Dolphins

Dolphins swimming with the ship are seen as a good sign.
9. Don't Sail On These Days...

Don't Sail On Thursdays, Fridays, the first Monday in April or the second Monday in August.

Fridays: Fridays have long been considered unlucky days, likely because Jesus Christ was crucified on a Friday.
Thursdays: Thursdays are bad sailing days because that is Thor's day, the god of thunders and storms.
First Monday in April: The first Monday in April is the day Cain slew Abel
Second Monday in August: The second Monday in August is the day the kingdoms of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed.

Superstitious sailors believe that the only good day to set sail is Sundays.

10. The Pirate's Look, is a Look For Me

A pierced earlobe on a sailor meant that he had sailed around the world or had crossed the equator. Superstitious sailors wore gold hoop earrings because they believed it brought good fortune. Some believed that the gold possessed magic healing powers or that it served as a protective talisman that would prevent the wearer from drowning.

Tattoos were also seen as lucky. Seafarers would usually tattoo a nautical star on their bodies as the North Star represented a signal that they were nearing home.

Cutting ones hair, nail trimming, and beard shaving were seen as big no-nos.

11. Don't Change the Name of the Boat

It's bad luck to change the name of the boat. Boats develop a life and mind of their own once they are named and Christened. If you do rename the boat- you absolutely must have a de-naming ceremony.

This ceremony can be performed by writing the current boat name on a piece of paper, folding the paper and placing it in a wooden box then burning the box. After, scoop up the ashes and throw them into the sea [Source].

12. Pay Your Dues

Seamen that hadn't paid their debts were blamed for storms and any other misfortunate events that would occur on the ship.

13. Avoid Gingers

Red heads were thought to bring bad luck to a ship if you happened to encounter one before boarding. However, if you speak to the redhead before they get the chance to speak to you, you're saved.

In order not to kill our luck with this post we've added one more superstition…

Lucky 14: Don't Kill an Albatross

Seabirds were thought to carry the souls of dead sailors and it is considered bad luck to kill one. However, it is considered good luck if you see one.

Boss TE-2 Tera Echo Delay pedal

I got it from an Ebay auction. I guess I shouldn't bitch, because I'm a notoriously ruthless Ebay sniper, but I was hoping to stay south of $80 on this used effect pedal. Snipers came in with 10 minutes left on the clock and pushed it from $70 to $96. Pricks. I guess I should be happy that they didn't push it up above $105 since that was my limit. There was a TE-2 'buy it now' on Ebay for $105 that I would've picked up instead if the bidding went above. As far as I can see, the 'buy it now' is still available. The pedal costs around $150 new (most delay type effects cost around that much or more), and some idiots are asking $180 for it on Ebay. There's one on Reverb that's as low as $90, but whoever's selling it wants $8 for shipping. So I still saved $2, for whatever that's worth.

I have:

$50K/$100K body injury liability
$30K property liability
$1K medical payments
Uninsured motorist BI add-on $50K/$100K Non-Ded
Uninsured Motorist PD add-on $30K w/ $250 Ded
Comprehensive $250 Ded (because I live in hurricane country... technically, I'm not required to carry it by GA law)

For my vehicle's age, I'm actually over-paying for extra coverage beyond minimum GA requirements, but I know how people drive around here, and I know if I drop to minimum requirements, somebody's gonna slam into me and I'll be screwed. Also, if I drop comprehensive, a hurricane will sweep through and miss everything except for that one really heavy tree branch from 5 miles away that falls on my car. That's just the kind of luck I have.

I've got AAA, so I don't bother with road side services through my insurance company. My insurance company treats every road side service call as a claim and they raise insurance rates when you use it. I found that out several years ago when my battery died in my driveway and I called the insurance road side service to get a jump start. They jacked my premium up by like $80. Pissed me off like you wouldn't believe. So I dropped the insurance roadside, signed up with AAA and bought a portable rechargeable jump starter that I've used once since I bought it.... on somebody else's car. It works great though.

Digitech Freqout Dynamic Feedback creator pedal. Find Pete Thorn's demo of it on Youtube, it's unreal.

Anyway, ProAudioStar was offering it for $70 brand new on eBay (it actually costs $180 new). I don't know why it was discounted so low, but I don't care either. Apparently, the seller has a bunch of them. Maybe they're having trouble moving them and just want to unload? I've bought a bunch of stuff off of him/her/them before, and they have a great rating and I have no complaints, so I'm not overly concerned. Anyway, I checked my credit card rewards and found that I had enough points to get a $50 eBay gift card, so I did.

The pedal costs $180 new. Total cost to me after a deep discount and a gift card: $25 (with taxes included).

Truth. I do notice though that they seem to carry much lower liability limits. I know from talking to folks who work at ICBC that they get a claim every couple years that exceed $5 million. If you have a fuck-up and cream a fancy car carrying a doctor, lawyer and their two kids, financially you're fucked without decent policy limits. Some people used to tell me when I was a broker and advised them that the $200,000 minimum liability limit wasn't considered enough by the insurer (I had to tell them that for the record), they'd respond: "whatever I'll just file for bankruptcy I'm not worth anything." But that's presuming the courts just let you off that easily and don't instead decide to garnish your wages for life.

Here's the policy coverages we have and that premium is for 6 months (it's the same on both vehicles). Plus we carry a $1,000,000 umbrella liability policy over and above what we have for auto insurance. That's an additional $273/year.

As far as minimums go, it's ridiculously low and stupid, another reason why you need to carry high coverages in case you get into an accident with someone that doesn't carry enough. The state minimum for liability in Colorado is only $25,000 per person for bodily injury. $50,000 per accident for bodily injury. $15,000 per accident for property damage.

Up here I think it's still a little different in terms of most of us have insurance because it's the law  I've heard that some people in the States still feel it's an option. Not sure if that's still true.

Years back cops used to stop us and if your car wasn't registered they would give us a 400 dollar fine. They've lessened that particular fine and give us 24 hours to produce.

But it's still all tied together. You can't register a car without having insurance first.

One of the best things they ever did here was basically rolling insurance up with registration. You buy and sign for both on the same piece of paper essentially, so they're one in the same as far as most people are concerned. Seems to make sense to allow/force the insurer to just issue both at the same time for licensed road vehicles  I think in some places you still have to make two difference stops to get registration then insurance? What a pain in the dick.

Smart man. Umbrella policies are awesome. And I'd bet you have your homeowner's policy on there too as well as any toys you might have (boat, ATV, trailer, etc)? A lot of people overlook that option but it can save you a fair bit, and in some cases might even offers broader protection that can 'drop down' if the underlying layer won't cover something.

Apologies if I'm completely ignorant of how shit works in Canada, but is your registration costs controlled by the federal/national/country government or your individual Province's government? Ours are controlled by the individual states.

Actually that's a bad way to put things. Our insurances are state-based, meaning we can't buy a policy in another state other than the one we live in. I can't buy insurance from a company in Colorado, and Lance can't buy his insurance from a company in Georgia. It's not really controlled by the state. The states don't control how much shit costs, for the most part, it's still a free market, although state laws will effect the cost of things.

It's the same here, Provincially controlled, so we have some very different systems going on in the country. We have some provinces that have province-run insurance, others where it's fully private, one or two provinces where they have 'no fault' systems which fucks over the lawyers (I'd love to see my province go that route), and then Quebec which has an entirely different rule of law all together and is basically another planet

This is a tangent but Quebec is so odd... their civil law isn't tort law, based on case law and precedent like all of Canada (and the Commonwealth countries), it's the Civil Code of Quebec like France which is all written down and codified more like how criminal law is. I wonder how many countries have two completely different sets of civil law going on?

I've heard of Cajuns and Creoles in that state but come to think of it I really don't know what either means.

Honestly, I can't speak to the veracity of this, but I think some of the early European Louisiana settlers were from Canada before coming down here. Acadians or some crap like that? Some kind of Eastern French Canadians who came down there for some reason or another.

Yeah, the Umbrella Policy covers everything we have insured under either auto or homeowner's insurance. It's a relatively cheap way ($247 for the year) to get that extra coverage. We're actually thinking of seeing how much extra it would cost to bump it up to $2 million.

We use TiVo boxes at home (one main DVR box and 2 TiVo mini's for the other rooms) instead of the Comcast boxes to save some money because Comcast charges you an 'outlet fee' for every room you have one of their boxes in  But the downside is, TiVo is at the mercy of Comcast for some things and Comcast has decided to declare EOL for the On Demand app that you can access thru TiVo and it ends at the end of the month. There's a Comcast app available for the Roku that you can actually use for live TV as well as all their On Demand stuff, so that's the new workaround for us. The Roku I had was too old to support the Comcast app, so I upgraded and will just move the older Roku to a different room.

We free-range feed the kibble and vary the wet food times. We have used automatic feeders; they work well. But I personally think training a cat to eat first thing in the morning is a really bad idea. Don't be shocked if he still wakes you up when you have the feeder.

I agree re: free feeding. Funny thing is, we've had him around 4 years and feeding was never an issue. My wife usually feeds him and since her morning work schedule changes so often and we're often home late, his feeding times were always all over the map and he never seemed to care. He was casual about eating too, usually still having a few pieces of kibble left by dinner or in the morning.

A couple months back though we got him into the vet. They sedated him and cleaned his teeth, and we had him shaved at the same because he's long-haired and sheds brutally in summer. Ever since he's been just absolutely desperate for food and finishes his entire meals all at once. This isn't the first time we've had him shaved either.

We can't figure out why his eating habits have changed so rapidly, it's bizarre and irritating.

Yes, expensive to fix but if it turns out to be a really reliable car you might be able to get a couple extra years out of it before the maintenance cost really start to climb. I always did like Audi even though they are a pain to work on.

There's a slight learning curve because (at least with the 650 and 665) you have to program them using the Harmony desktop software to program it. But after you get familiar with using it, it's easy-peasy. I love our Harmony remotes.

The XSight remotes had an online cloud data base you programmed from. You created an account and plugged the remote into the computer using usb. There you built and organized your programs and then you saved it to the remote and the cloud.

I can post pix from home of the software, but it sounds similar. It saves all your settings (I think the Harmony software can store up to 6 different remotes) and you just do the changes in the software and when it's ready, you plug the Harmony in with a micro USB cord, it downloads the changes, and it's all set. And the Harmony 650 and 665 can control up to 10 different devices. Not sure about the one you have. But I love the Harmony remotes.

I'm kinda weird in that if I can lap the guitar, then I'll adapt to it and get on perfectly fine with it. That rules out odd shapes, like offset or Flying Vs and BC Rich Warlocks, or Ovations on the acoustic side. I just can't get comfortable with those. I do love the look of offset Vs, so it kinda sucks.

If I don't like the sound of a guitar, then it becomes an upgrade project until I'm satisfied with the end result. I'm buying this one used, for about $250 less than it costs new, and it's in mint condition, so I won't feel bad at all if I start gutting it.

Alright so lesson learned: Do not order shit that isn't shipped by Amazon.

I ordered this jacket back in early June that looked nice and had decent reviews. It said free shipping but I neglected to notice that it wasn't shipped by Amazon. Didn't fit and quality was shit so naturally I asked to refund it.... then the games started. The seller sent me a few emails in a row offering stupid shit like a 25% discount to keep it 'and give it to someone in need' at first, then 40%, and then after I wasn't responding to that shit they finally said "ok we'll accept it back, you pay for shipping." Whatever, $40 jacket, $12 shipping, that's lame but worth it.

So I ship it back... and I wait, and I wait... and I get a return label in the post. I run down to the post office: The item is returned 'unclaimed.' Canada Post wants another $12 to give it back to me as they've now shipped it back. So I said nope, you keep it. I'm now contacting amazon directly to let them know this company is awfully suspicious with their refunds and isn't accepting return shipping. I'm not sure if amazon will be able to help but worth asking (I think they have that a-z guarantee but I've never had to use it before). Hopefully they'll boot this seller from their platform.

Yeah, it happens but it's rare. There are gonna be shady people no matter where you buy them from. It's becoming really rare on Amazon to actually find a re-seller that doesn't use Amazon for the shipping, but there's still a few. We had a similar situation when the kid wanted a backpack last year before school started. The one she wanted was ONLY available through a third party seller on Amazon and they did their own shipping. It went back and forth between me and the seller for weeks before I finally had to get Amazon involved and they made good on it by canceling the order and getting my money back.

My parents were impressed and bought into it, and I believe we still had some of the pieces right up until my Dad passed, which was probably about 45 years. They were black.

You still had to use some water I recall but the pans did last a long, long time.

AllClad is some of the best cookware you can buy.

When we were looking, there's cookware sets that cost well over $1,000 for the same amount or less pieces.

We decided to pass on the $41 set we found at Walmart.com

I think you made a good call splurging a bit for higher end stuff. God knows what the cheap non-stick shit is leaching into our food. That shit makes me nervous and it scratches just when you stack it in your cupboards. If you're going to go non-stick, spend decent coin like you did. Wife and I bought a $200 non-stick 10-piece set from Cambodian Tire when we first moved in together and it did not hold up well at all.

Non-stick definitely has its place. I use cast iron for searing (I maintain you can't make Mexican without cast iron), carbon steel for my wok, but non-stick for stuff that's going to simmer, eggs, rice, any sticky junk really. With the new technology you can even use metal utensils with some of the high end non-stick sets.

I'm a bit of a cookware dork.

Funny enough, we have some higher end cookware. Non of it is non stick. Other than a made in US pizza/cookie pan. We have various cast iron skillets and Dutch oven types, all pots are heavy gauge aluminum.

We have two large cast iron frying pans already. For some things, there's nothing better than a good old fashioned cast iron frying pan

And with that teflon coating that flakes off on the cheaper stuff? Just tell everyone it's fresh ground pepper.

What kind of dent puller and it depends on the dent. The glue on tabs work ok for small round shallow dings.

I've seen people do more damage trying to fix it themselves, if it's a large creased dent it is real easy to stretch the metal and then it takes more work and will cost more to fix in the long run even if it "looks better" because you "fixed it part way".

Yup, used it the same day I bought it. We had some meat that we bought as part of a deal and on Sunday I had to do something with it. And meat is okay in the freezer for a short time, but it seems to go from fine to freezer burned overnight. Not that freezer burned food isn't edible or safe to eat, it is, but it's just not good  After reading the instructions, it was fairly easy to use and I vacuum sealed three packages of meat and it worked great. We may not use this on a daily basis. or even weekly, but like you mentioned, when you consider the waste you end up having from meat that ends up forgotten in the back of the freezer, this will make it last so much longer with little to no waste if it's sealed right.

The model that came with battery/charger only came with a 1.5AH battery reported to last only a couple hours on HIGH. I bought the "Jacket only" option for 40 bucks less and bought two 3AH batteries and charger for $89. The 3AH batteries supposedly will last 6+ hours each on HIGH.

Supposed to arrive tomorrow so I'll have it before I head back to work Sun.

I'm pretty excited about it, heard good things from friends and reviews. Almost bought one last year but never did. This year I'm working 5 weeks longer, all the heat and water is shut off in all the houses so I'm spending up to 12 hours between outside and unheated/minimally heated houses.

This past week it was low/mid 40's outside and 50ish inside, I was struggling to stay warm, hopefully this helps.

Was going to do it myself but for $50, I'll let these awesome nerds do it for me - the last one they built hasn't had a single problem in 6 years *knock on wood*

Went AMD for the CPU and GPU for the first time... just way better prices for parts that benchmark the same or higher than their comparable Intel parts. Hopefully I don't regret it but reviews are good for their new Ryzen processors, and the guy at the store said "AMD is spanking Intel at the moment so do it" and I did.

Ive talk to both of them and the guy at Trinity seemed way more personable. He is even working out a relay board so I can footswitch channels including a jumped channel.

Blackstar artist 15 combo. I messed around with a new one when they first came out, and really liked it, but couldn't justify $900 at the time. Average used price is $400 or so. This guy in Houston has it listed at $200, local pick up only. I'll see if he'll meet at GC. I'm looking for another 15 watt cleanish amp to run wet/dry with my bassbreaker 15.

I think I've found it. It looks like he's had it listed for over a year. He's probably just trying to get rid of it and is getting tired of waiting.

Yeah it's been up for awhile. I have a hard time finding the listing date on reverb now. I messaged the seller, no reply yet. I'll message again Wednesday.

Blackstars are solid amps. If you're really skeptical, bring a guitar and cord with you if you go to check it out.

I'm definitely bringing my Tele. It's the one I'm most used to its sound. The LP, since I just changed wiring and pickups, I'm still getting reacquainted with.

Well, I said I wasn't going to buy any guitar shit this year, but the price was good enough to make me a liar. I bought a Digitech Obscura Altered Delay pedal. For less than $100.

The seller of the amp contacted me this morning. I'll be going to check it out Saturday.

Bought it. For $200, I think I got an awesome deal. Does cleans to crunchy blues/ classic rock most excellent. https://i450.photobucket.com/albums/qq223/kmdracer/Mobile%20Uploads/20200314_190814_zps05zrimav.jpg

Bought $200 of groceries... and there were no eggs, regular cheese (just the fancy shit in the deli), rice, flour, paper products or cleaning supplies. Checked a second store for flour because my wife really wants to bake but it's nowhere to be found. I'm hearing restaurants are selling their supplies so I might try looking into that tomorrow.

Does it count if my Mom bought it for my birthday? I gotta admit, took me by surprise.

I went out this morning at 7am and spent $100. Got pretty much everything I needed. Some shelves were a bit sparse but as long as I wasn't too picky about what brand something was, pretty much everything was available.

The last thing I bought... a $200 vet bill.

My wife got home from work early today. I started making us sandwiches, nice lunch date right? Wrong.

She goes upstairs to change and somehow, a giant pissed off WASP was in the bedroom... in April. She slams the door shut and I come upstairs with a magazine to swat it (fulling expecting I'll get stung because wasps hate me). Instead, the second she opens the door, the cat goes tear-assing in and snipes the wasp out of mid-air. This is a lazy-ass ragdoll cat that only has interest in playing for 2 minutes a day and wont kill spiders if you put them in front of him, but he nuked this wasp no problem!

So the wasp is dead and the cat goes bolting behind the bed. I look at the dead wasp and sure enough the stinger is gone. The cat is shaking his head and foaming at the mouth. We pin him down and the stinger is lodged in his mouth. On top of that his face is swelling up. We called my sister who is a veterinarian and she said to try force-feeding him Benadryl, but this 15 pound cat is basically an alligator and we can't pin him. He's drooling and shaking froth everywhere like Beethoven in heat. I would've kept trying but my wife was borderline in tears and couldn't handle it.

So... trip to the vet, $200 for them to get the stinger out and give him a shot

Fuck.

lost in melb.
