Games in the Call of Duty and Battlefield series have a pretty hardcore following. Maybe not as hardcore as World of Warcraft players, but they will still line up waiting for a midnight opening to get the latest game in each series.

We reported earlier today that Kmart messed up and started selling copies of Modern Warfare 3 a few days before its official release. Microsoft confirmed that if you manage to get a legitimate copy before next week then you wont get banned as that only happens for pirated versions.

So the good news is you can play the game now and start practicing your multiplayer skills ready for when thousands of other players log on next week. But some early buyers decided not to play, and instead put their copy up for sale on eBay. One of those copies has just sold for an unbelievable $1,725.

This game is not months early or even weeks early, it goes on general release in four days time for $60 or less. Why would anyone pay $1,665 more than they needed to just for a few days extra play time? The premium paid equates to $416 for every pre-release day they get to play the game. Or to look at it another way, that cash could have been put towards a pretty fantastic TV on which to play a $60 game.

Crazy? Yes. But then I am probably underestimating how intense the desire is for some gamers to own this title, and I really hope it was worth it for the guy/girl who won. I’m also pretty sure the seller recoilgamerz is laughing all the way to the bank and his local video game store next week when he buys another copy at the RRP.

I never download or try pre-releases...they're way too dodgy to get running properly.I usually wait over a month so all the kinks are ironed out...no online play for me.

I'm buying my games now GF, and noticed that even with legit copies the %%##! launchers or whatever are crap and they have to be patched heavily

Ohh no I was referring to the buyer of this game for almost two grand  But yeah, game rips aren't usually good for a while after they release I find too.

The only games I don't but are ones where I have no interest in the online/multiplayer, which isn't many these days.
