We used to have the registries account at my old job and we gave out plates. I know the client submits a list to the license plate manufacturer to ensure no obvious things like COK or DIK or FUK appears.

Where to begin?

It's basically a joke. It's making fun of the cluelessness of antigunners. They think that AR-15s and the 5.56 round are the ultimate evil on the Earth, when in reality, they're just another round in another semi-automatic gun. They're by far neither the largest nor most devastating caliber out of all domestically available gun rounds.

The "standard vs full semiautomatic" ding is a stupid mistake antigunners often make. It's either semiautomatic or fully automatic, fully automatic being illegal to buy and own in the USA without a massive tax stamp and a bunch of other flaming hoops to jump through... and unconstitutional, btw. They also mention the AR-10's 308 being a hunting round, when a lot of antigun politicians say you can't hunt with an AR-15, which is bullshit. A lot of people do hunt with them. I have an AR-15. And even though I haven't been out hunting with it, if I were to go hunting, it would be the first rifle that I'd pack for the excursion.

The AR-10, while the "10" is a lower number, is another semiautomatic rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO/.308 Winchester, which are larger rounds that go faster and pack a way heavier punch than the AR-15's 5.56x45mm NATO/.223 Remington rounds. A lot of bolt-action rifles are chambered in .308. Great for hunting large game, although there are other calibers out there that are bigger and faster, and better in a lot of people's opinions. I'm thinking of the 7mm, the 8mm, the 6.5 Creedmore, and tons of others.... all bigger than the AR-15's 5.56, all faster and deadlier than the 5.56. My former neighbor used 8mm exclusively when he went hunting. Expensive rounds. But good rounds.

If you wanted me to be honest, barring the 50 BMG caliber rifles from the conversation, I'd be more afraid of someone with a 12-gauge shotgun than someone with an AR-15. The 12 gauge is far more devastating and if you're using shotshells, then it doesn't take much to hit a target. Just point in the general direction and squeeze the trigger. But shotguns aren't as scary in most people's eyes since they don't look like military rifles. A lot of antigunners think that because something looks like a military rifle, that people shouldn't have them. There are rifles chambered in .22lr that look like military rifles, and while I wouldn't want to be shot by one, .22lr as a caliber is not that big of a deal. It's a small game caliber, like birds and squirrels and stuff like that. Honestly, I think a squirrel could shake off a .22, and flip you off in the process... but I digress. The rifles look evil, so they must be evil, or at least that's the antigunners' justification... which again is bullshit.

The whole gun argument for most Australians is bewildering, given that most don't own guns - or want to. Before the amnesty, when the Commonwealth Government accepted weapons and then destroyed them to reduce the number of guns in private hands in an effort to reduce the likelihood of gun massacres, I hazard that the vast majority of people owned guns for hunting. In Australia that more often means that they bought a 22 or a 'shotty' - a 12g or a 4/10 for rabbits or 'plinking' targets. When they grew tired of that activity or when it became a longer and longer drive to places where you could safely shoot the rabbits these weapons typically were forgotten in the back of the wardrobe until they were: 1. burglarised 2. sold on when the old bloke died. The Amnesty was called to divest the population of these weapons mostly but it also gathered up some 'military' guns which are basically useless or over-gunning for the type of game we have in most of Australia.

Was the Port Arthur massacre an event that helped create the gun rule? That was a bad one and I read an article echoing what you've mentioned above talking about over-gunning and the average Australian's needs. We have a similar situation where most gun owners are farmers and/or hunters. Rifles like the AR-15 are restricted up here to both location (gun ranges) and magazine capacity. (5 rather than 30 rounds). Our laws vary from the US across the board for weapon ownership and we for the most part do well in terms of rules vs gun owners wants/complaints. Just recently in our province some thieves stole vehicles from a farm and the owner tracked them down with some help from friends and they held the thief until the RCMP arrived. They're investigating the farmer using the gun. He has a valid permit to carry the rifle, authorities are more concerned with the idea of civilians holding people at gunpoint because of an alleged criminal event. The surrounding community is supporting him because thefts are rarely solved on farms and isolated homes.
