They're literally selling their souls, by trying to take a shortcut.

Do what Dave said: Go pick up a shitty instrument at a garage sale, or hell, learn to sing, get some friends with other shitty instruments together and go suck in somebody's garage for a while. Learn how to play and gel together. Learn to write a song. Learn to write a song that hooks your listeners' ears. That's the only way you'll ever understand.

Music isn't a get rich quick scheme. It may seem that way to someone who's never been on the inside. But it's not. It's a religion. It's a spirituality. These Idol shows and The Voice, they cheapen everything. They suck the soul out of everything.

Yeah they are Porky. They are getting lucky. These shows are subverting a process that takes years, decades even. There's some people that never make it out of this process to get their 15 minutes... some ridiculously, insanely talented people that no one will ever hear of. And here comes these schmoes walking off the street into prefabricated glitz and glamour, singing other artist's songs, being built up to be something they didn't truly earn the way other original musical artists earn it, something they don't truly deserve the way other successful musical artists truly deserve it when they actually get it.

:lol: I get your point totally........ i just see it differently (possibly down to the years of practice to get even half-decent on guitar whereas i could just sing from the word go - you either have a voice or you don't and no amount of singing practice will ever make you sing like Freddy Mercury if you aren't born with it). I see it this way - Dave's method is harder. You practice practice practice, sometimes for years and if the right break doesn't come along, you never get heard.

People on AI, The Voice go to open auditions where they only have to beat the group that they're singing against. Not to say it isn't hard taking that route, but it is like DGX mentioned...those people are subverting part of the other process (trying to get discovered, get a demo, get gigs, get air time etc..) by going to open casting calls for singing.

Another facet is a band vs an individual. It's easier mechanically to play one instrument, than compared to a group of people...because the group have to all be uniformly good rather than just one person singing and staying in key.

I really agree with what Dave says in that quote. To me, playing in a band coming up the normal way is always going to be a more real experience than trying out for AI. The TV shows already give semi finalists exposure and opportunities, just by featuring them on nationwide TV. No garage band will ever get that kind of opportunity.

I remember an interview with Slash just as GnR was breaking. He said that in LA during the early 90's, there were over 500 rock bands playing clubs and doing similar music. He said it was blind luck and a demo that got them into a studio and allowed them to write and play more songs. Without the money/break/blind luck, no more songs would be heard because they didn't have enough of their own money to record and distribute.
