A Costa Mesa woman is accused of hitting her daughter and locking her in a closet because the child earned bad grades, according to court records.

The 32-year-old woman is charged with one misdemeanor count of child abuse, Costa Mesa police told the Daily Pilot, which has decided not to name the mother to protect the identity of her daughter, a minor.

Authorities alleged that on Oct. 29 the mother hit her 13-year-old daughter three times with a stick and then locked her in a closet for six hours as punishment for "bad" grades, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Phil Myers.

He did not know the grades the girl earned.

A concerned party called police after the incident, he said.

Police arrested the woman within a couple of hours of the report. She was in custody at Orange County Jail until early Monday morning, when she posted bail and was released, according to Orange County Sheriff's Department records.

Ohhhh....kay...well, I'll probably piss a few people off here but...I'm not sure being locked in a closet for a few hours is the worst thing a parent could do to a kid who needs to learn a lesson. Hitting with a stick, that's bad.

Whats the big deal? Maybe the mother should have rewarded the kid with an iphone or something instead...

Sure she could have used better judgement but again does this really warrant cops and child abuse charges?

I think it was for hitting her with a stick.

Again, six hours in a closet is sort of extreme, but I don't think it's child abuse.

6 hrs is a little extreme

But it's not 'lose your kid and go to jail' extreme.

this.... I mean who hasn't been beaten by their parents and locked in a confined space? Plus she's 13, so that means she's probably a little shit anyway....

Without more info it's hard to make a call. I'm OK on the closet part and the stick thing could go either way. Whipping her in the face with it is a lot different than a few whacks on the rump that didn't leave marks.

For real though, the closet thing is a bit extreme.. I'd prolly send her to her room and remove all the DSi and books and toys and such... or make her rake the yard... Thats a fate worse than being locked in a closet around these parts..

Are you quoting something from a porn movie?

No, perhaps not, but sex with nineteen year old girls is always a good idea.

I'm with MrsM, that’s an extremely harsh punishment for bad grades, maybe instead of beating her child and locking her away she should be sat with her helping to improve those grades, and for all those who seem to think its ok to be beaten and locked up, how would you like to be treated that way?

I got 6 hours in the closet for being good

the beating part is fucking stupid any way you slice it....children only learn fear responses from that, like dogs.

To lock someone in a closet is false imprisonment and just plain wrong!

Again, for like the third time, the beating is wrong. I'm saying that as a punishment, six hours in a closet is extreme, but hardly 'lose your kid and go to jail' extreme.

I'm not a parent but I sure know what works when I'm babysitting...you either remove a privilege that they love or you explain how disappointed you are with their choice of actions.

If that doesn't work then you cane their buttocks until they scream like the Vienna Boys Choir

I don’t think putting the Mother in a cell is extreme, its only what she did to her Daughter, what would have happened if there had been a house fire, kids have died in fires due to being locked up, if you treated an adult like this you would be locked up and charged, I don’t see any difference.

Both of those worked just fine with my munchkins, never in a million years would I even consider locking them up.

A house fire? Look, how is asking her to go to her room and leaving the door wide open any different then? She might get hit by a meteorite or falling Russian satellite.

Locked closet = no escape route at all, no windows nothing
Unlocked door to bedroom = lots of escape routes

I know for fact that this kind of tragedy happens, maybe thats why it sickens me so much.

Falling Russian satellites do not respect escape routes. Fact.
