Bears QB Jay Cutler made a charity visit to a local hospital Wednesday morning hoping to cheer up some down-and-out people while improving his tarnished image following yet another disastrous performance against the Packers Sunday night. The results weren’t anywhere near what he and his PR handlers were hoping.

“It was great Jay wanted to help out but he’s not exactly the most cheery guy on the planet,” said Northwestern Memorial Hospital director Phil Stevens. “His inability to relate to patients was really tough to overcome.”

Stevens said Cutler’s visit got off to a bad start when an elderly patient began jokingly chastising him for his play Sunday night. Cutler immediately glazed over and maintained a distant, sullen mood for the rest of this visit, which wore off on the patients with whom he interacted. By the time Cutler left, he was so agitated he flipped the bird to a group of people at the hospital’s reception area.

“I didn’t think it would be possible for an NFL quarterback’s visit to leave our patients more depressed,” said Stevens, “but that’s exactly what happened when Jay Cutler was here today.”

Bears head coach Marc Trestman — also under fire for the team’s disappointing season — was quick to defend his franchise QB.

“I know Jay prepared intensely for his visit to the hospital,” said Trestman. “Things just didn’t start out like we hoped they would and he was under duress for the entire hospital visit.”

Asked what changes would be made, Trestman seemed to pin the blame on a backup receiver who’s been cut.

“We anticipate that releasing Santonio Holmes earlier this week will make a difference in the way Jay approaches future hospital visits,” said Trestman. “Don’t ask me how. Just trust me on this one.”

After being pummeled by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football, Bears coach Marc Trestman told the team he’ll ban the traditional post-practice treat of milk and cookies.

“I had them run laps after the Miami beat-down, then nutcrackers until they puked after we got shellacked by the Patriots,” Trestman said in his post-game press conference.

“Nothing’s worked. So it’s time to show them real discipline.”

In addition, Trestman cancelled the team’s subscription to People magazine and will not allow television watching and cigarette smoking during halftime for remaining games this season.

love how the refs were helping out the giants at home...their second to last drive after that big long throw, let them get away with a blatant offensive pass interference...

with the game winding down, how was that not intentional grounding, Eli fuggin blind J-hooks the football over his shoulder as he's getting taken down...

 relatively inconsequential on the latter, but the former gave the giants 4 shots at the end zone inside the 10 yard line, when they should have been hit with 15 just to start.

the refs were helping the goddam cardinals, too. I know detroit wasnt exactly killin it, but calling that instantaneous touch by the cardinals as sufficient for a possession kept them from having the ball out at the 40, 45? That was utter and complete bullshit. And then to give the cards a no look first down as the clock strikes 2 to finish the game off...

cmon. that is the ONLY thing I do not want to see, if refs fucking up the outcomes of games. you're welcome, cards....we know you pretty much had it in the bag anyway, but it always helps when you're at home and the refs give you at least 2 favorable calls that prevents the other team from having a chance at one of those 4th q comebacks they's got a few of...

its retaliation for almost beating dickerson's record  or not beating it  more like he was a victim of ray rice's situation being in the news. I think peterson should be playing, but I dunno, maybe they just bench him and this is his chance to get away from that shitass team that's going to struggle to make the playoffs every year and pull a manning jump to a bigger better team and then really tear it up.

or perhaps too much of his career is already wasted in minnesota. he would have ran over dickerson's record easily if he had a real team to run behind.

My brother-in-law and I were talking about this during the first half. Sanchez is a terrible QB, but he's been doing great in Philly. It's not Sanchez. Sure he's got some kind of talent, he wouldn't be in the NFL if he didn't, but again, compared to other QBs in the league, he's not good at all. It's Chip Kelly's system. His system works for almost anybody as long as they're buying into Chip's game plan. And it looks like the team's buying into Kelly's system.

Imagine Rodgers or P. Manning in that system.

He trots out every week and says the team is focused and "had a great week of practice". The coaches are doing a great job, they just need to execute better on game day.

Jay Cutler is no longer the starting quarterback in Chicago. It's worth wondering if he ever will start for the Bears again.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Cutler has been benched for Jimmy Clausen, according to two sources informed of the situation. Rapoport previously reported that coach Marc Trestman considered benching Cutler when the team was trailing at halftime in Week 12 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cutler has struggled since that game, but this news is still jarring.

Cutler leads all quarterbacks with 24 turnovers this season, and has run through four different offensive coordinators since arriving in Chicago in 2009. Rapoport reported that the Bears were having "buyer's remorse" after giving Cutler a seven-year contract in January, and that his game-management skills were in question. Cutler has struggled to change plays at the line of scrimmage, especially in the running game.

The move to Clausen, 27, calls into serious question whether Cutler will be the team's starting quarterback next season. Rapoport reports the Bears were already considering moving on from Cutler this offseason considering his salary and performance. They will ramp up those efforts now.

The Bears owe Cutler $15.5 million fully guaranteed next season, which will make him very tricky to trade. But it's not impossible. There are a lot of QB-needy teams and it's possible the Bears will eat some of Cutler's salary. We doubt the Bears could get much in return for Cutler; getting rid of him would essentially be a salary dump.

Rapoport suggested on NFL Total Access that coach Marc Trestman could wind up outlasting Cutler in Chicago. Benching a "franchise quarterback" for Clausen, a limited player that hasn't started since 2010, sends a strong message. NFL Media columnist Michael Silver reported that some in the Bears building believe Clausen will "light it up" by running Trestman's offense, but that's easier said than done. The Bears face the No. 1 defense in the league this week: the Detroit Lions.

It's hard to project too far into the future with these Bears. The status of Trestman and general manager Phil Emery aren't necessarily set in stone. Perhaps the only way Cutler could stay in Chicago is if an entirely new regime is in place.

By Kevin Patra - NFL.com

Jay Cutler was blindsided when told he would be benched in favor of Jimmy Clausen.

"Shocked I think at first, I didn't see it coming," Cutler said Thursday of his initial reaction.

Despite the benching, which could signify a potential end to his career with the Chicago Bears, the quarterback said he doesn't want to play elsewhere.

"I would like to stay here," Cutler said. "I really like it here. I love the guys in the locker room. This is where I'd like to be."

The 31-year-old quarterback is in his sixth season in Chicago and signed a seven-year, $127 million contract in the offseason, with $54 million guaranteed.

Cutler has been in the eye of the storm surrounding the Bears in 2014. The quarterback's poor play has been criticized all season -- he leads the NFL in turnovers. The turmoil hit its peak last week after NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported about the Bears' having "buyer's remorse" over his contract. Bears offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer then admitted to the team he was the source of one part of the report criticizing Cutler's play.

After being told of his demotion, the quarterback said he considered that Monday night's disaster could have been his last game in Chicago.

"Yeah. It definitely crossed my mind, for sure," Cutler said.

The veteran admitted that he "didn't take the benching well" after being told on Wednesday that Trestman was going to go with Clausen.

However, in a very even-keeled presser on Thursday, Cutler added he believes he could still work with Trestman if both returned to Chicago next year, calling him a "heck of a quarterback coach."

Barring a drastic change in on-field play, it doesn't appear Trestman will survive more than the final two games of the season. The Bears will then have a decision to make on what to do with their high-priced quarterback.

Cutler wants to remain in Chicago, but it's likely not his choice to make.

My observations from the Bear's game v Detroit.

The team seemed more pumped up and playing harder.
The defense was decent, not great, but competitive.
The quarterback was animated, thanking guys, getting in guys faces as necessary, being a leader. He played well. When a guy hit him helmet to helmet on a slide, he got up and called him a motherfucker to his face. I like this kid. Obviously, this wasn't Cutler. What a style contrast.
The Bears played a competitive game. Finally. Thankfully.

Conclusion: Cutler's a cancer to the organization.

Earlier in the week, TMZ released a video of Jerry Jones's son Stephen partying with several people, including what appears to be Dean Blandino, the NFL's head of officiating. According to at least one person Jason La Canfora spoke to in the league, that is "definitely" him in the blue, skipping out of a Dallas Cowboys party bus.

On first blush, the video is not all that interesting. It's just Stephen Jones and his entourage hanging out with several women on a bus with a bunch of Cowboys logos on it on the Sunset Strip. NFL executives are livid, however, because Blandino is looking so chummy with a team executive and owner's son.

<iframe id="kaltura_player_1420462512" height="360" width="640" style="border: 0px solid #ffffff;" src="http://cdnapi.kaltura.com/index.php/kwidget/wid/0_lgzu72hb/uiconf_id/6740162/st_cache/86093?&amp;">Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames.</iframe>

The quotes from Canfora are from executives around the league, none of whom are within the NFC East, and they are all pissed about the perception of impropriety. No one outright accused anyone of bad faith, just the idea of it is enough. And while there are certainly reasons why the NFL's head of officiating might be seen eating and socializing with team executives on business, this does not appear to be one of those times. I mean, Jay Glazer isn't even on his phone.

Here's a sampling of the outrage:

"That's definitely Dean," said an official with one club... "Is the league trying to tell you it's not him? What is the league telling you guys about it? That looks horrible. I can't think of another owner in the league who wouldn't be pissed off after seeing that."

"So, should I have my owner take him to a strip club when he visits us?" asked one team official, hypothetically. "Is that how it works? We like Dean a lot, but let me tell you, if that was him out with (the owner of a rival of the club this official works for), my owner would be going nuts. This just can't happen.

"It's total hypocrisy. This is a league where some people are above the law, but if you are a coach or a player or a low-level team employee, look out — they'll throw the book at you. They take away your pension. I'll give Stephen credit, at least they took a bus. (Colts owner Jim) Irsay should have got a bus a long time ago. Have they gotten around to disciplining him yet?"

" There shouldn't be any situation like this going on that could cloud his judgment. How is this protecting the shield? The league loves to throw that term around when it applies to players. So how is this not an issue now?"

That last one is a very interesting question. The NFL has not commented on the matter.

NFL head of officials Dean Blandino said Monday that the non-call on pass interference against Detroit Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew by Dallas Cowboys linebacker Anthony Hitchens was debatable, but holding definitely should have been called on the play.

Blandino, speaking on NBC Sports Radio's "Pro Football Talk Live," said the officiating crew erred by announcing a penalty and then picking up the flag. Ideally, he said, the crew would have discussed the play and then announced that there was no penalty on the play. If the crew had handled the situation in this manner, "it would have mitigated some of the response to this," he said.

Blandino said that when he reviewed the play, it appeared as a "judgment call that could have gone either way." But he saw a clear "jersey grab" by Hitchens that should have resulted in a defensive holding call that "should have been called."

The 5-yard defensive holding call would have given the Lions a first down, as the play came on a Matthew Stafford pass on third-and-1 from the Dallas 46. The Lions lined up on fourth down but eventually punted after failing to draw the Cowboys offside. Dallas scored the eventual winning points in the 24-20 wild-card win on the ensuing drive.

There has been debate about whether the makeup of the officiating crew in the playoffs, where "All-Star" crews are put together for the games, helped to cause the confusion on the play. Blandino said he doesn't think "that was ultimately the factor that led to this situation happening." He said there are "pros and cons" to having All-Star crews versus the crews that have worked together the entire season, but in the end it's a moot point because "most of these officials have worked together at some point in their career."

Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant came onto the field without his helmet to argue the initial pass-interference call Sunday, an act that had many wondering why he wasn't flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. But Blandino said that Bryant's actions weren't an automatic penalty, as the rule against players taking their helmets off on the field applies only to players in the game at that time.

"The ref really wasn't listening to what I was saying," Bryant said Sunday. "I gave him my opinion. I thought it was a bad call. He was blocking me out and telling me to get back (to the sidelines) and the coaches, they were grabbing me. Since the play was dead, I thought it was OK."

The official on Sunday had "discretion" to decide whether Bryant's actions warranted a penalty and decided against it, although Blandino said he would have supported a penalty on the Cowboys' star receiver if one had been called.

Blandino was also asked about his presence on a Cowboys party bus in August and perceptions that he is biased toward owner Jerry Jones' team.

He said the bus incident is something that "happened," but it has nothing to do with how Sunday's game was officiated.

"People can believe what they want to believe, but one thing had nothing to do with the other," he said.

If it wasn't a catch according to the strict definition of the rule, then the rule sucks. Jerry Jones is on the rules committee, I expect it will be looked at during the off season.

a) that is the rule, b) I saw nothing that even remotely looked like a stretch to the goal line.

Lance won't be happy. The Colts beat the Broncos, and will face the Pats in the AFC Championship.

It could be worse I guess, we could still have Jay Cutler :-k

CBS 4 Denver

DENVER (CBS4) – CBS4’s Vic Lombardi has confirmed the Denver Broncos and head coach John Fox have agreed to part ways.

Lombardi reported that Fox was out as head coach and not to be surprised if the team takes a look at Gary Kubiak, who is the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens and former offensive coordinator for the Broncos.

Kubiak left the Broncos to become head coach of the Houston Texans in 2006.

Lombardi also said to expect the Broncos to make an overture to Broncos’ current offensive coordinator Adam Gase, who has interviewed for the head coach position for several teams.

Lombardi said not to expect the Broncos to offer the job to current defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, who was reported on Monday to be the first to get a second interview for the Oakland Raiders head coaching position.

Per sports radio 104.3 The Fan in Denver, GM John Elway has told all coaches on the Brocos coaching staff are free to look elsewhere for jobs. It will be up to the new head coach if he wants to replace or retain any coaches on the new staff.

It was inevitable really, something had to give and usually the first one to take the blame, rightly or wrongly, is the head coach. I knew Elway wouldn't be happy that with Fox at the helm and Manning under center, the Broncos won a grand total of ONE playoff game and two of the three years in the playoffs were one and done for the Broncos, with both those games at home.

I've decided Fox is a bad idea for Chicago, but it sounds like it may go that way. If we are going to hire a 61 year old Denver reject, isn't Shanahan at 62 the more proven winner?

Do you trust the guy as a head coach, Lance?

In better news: Jordan Lynch signs with CFL's Eskimos! Back at QB! :woot:

Shanahan is a tyrant who wants iron-fisted control of things. After Elway and Terrell Davis retired after winning the 2 consecutive Super Bowls, Shanahan won a grand total of 1 playoff game in the next 8 or 9 years that he was here. He also cannot draft to save his life.

Fox on the other hand, is a players coach and does seem to be a really good guy. He also turns teams around rather quickly. His biggest drawback and one that is infuriating is that he is just too conservative on play calling on offense when things are close or on the line. Other than that, I liked him and thought he did a good job for the most part in Denver. But, someone had to take the fall for the recent ineptitude of the Broncos in the playoffs and it was always going to be the head coach.

All quiet on the John Fox front? Nothing to worry about just yet

If your memory has grown hazy, the YouTube clip is still out there as a refresher, documenting the embarrassing twist from a bungled Chicago Bears coaching search from late in the 20th century.

Dave Wannstedt had been fired after the 1998 season and Dave McGinnis was preparing to become the team’s new head coach.

Until he wasn’t.

On a January day in 1999, the Bears were so ready to introduce McGinnis as their new coach that they announced his hiring before it was official. So in a bizarre and chaotic chain of events, plans changed just a tad. For McGinnis. For the Bears.

Rather than an enthusiastic introductory press conference at Halas Hall, there was instead a media chase to track McGinnis down at O’Hare International Airport. He wasn’t going to be the Bears coach any longer. And he was on his way out of town.

“Obviously,” McGinnis said, “we couldn’t reach an agreement. I mean it started (when) there was an announcement made obviously before we had agreed to any terms. And then it went downhill from there.”

And as former local sports anchor Brad Palmer said of the episode that day, “It’s going to be a while before the Bears can make the nightmare disappear. This once proud franchise has become the laughingstock, not only of the city, but of the National Football League.”

None of this is to say that the Bears are headed for a similar embarrassment with their current coaching search. And none of this is to suggest that what happened to McGinnis could also happen to John Fox, the former Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers head coach who swung through Lake Forest on Wednesday to interview for the Bears’ head coaching job.

Fox remains the frontrunner to become the organization’s 15th head coach. And, as of Thursday afternoon, there were strong indications from those familiar with the process that a union between Fox and the Bears was still likely.

But as of Thursday afternoon, there was also no finalized deal to report.

And even if Fox was just coaching the Broncos as recently as last Sunday in the playoffs and even though his interview with the Bears only came Wednesday at Halas Hall, the lack of an announced hire had started to make some eager fans edgy. Within a success-starved fan base that certainly has plenty of scar tissue still present from the McGinnis episode as well as a long stretch of relative irrelevance in the Super Bowl conversation, a fear factor had crept in. Could the Bears really let a big fish get away at such a critical time?

Again, according to sources, Fox still registers as the team’s top choice to become the new coach. But until contract negotiations are completed, until a deal is signed and rubber-stamped, until every line of fine print is written and read, there will be no word from either side to make a hiring official.

So stay tuned.

It’s worth noting that both Fox and the Bears would seem to have plenty of incentive to get something done. The Bears, of course, would look foolish if they let a coach with 119 regular season victories and two Super Bowl appearances get away at a time when they need just the kind of energy boost that Fox can provide. And Fox, for what it’s worth, will certainly take note of the number of other head coaching vacancies still out there elsewhere around the NFL: Two.

One of those is in Denver, the organization that Fox split from on Monday. And the other is in Atlanta, where the Falcons are reportedly pushing to land Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

In other words, leverage will quickly become a factor and produce a bit of a staring contest between the Bears and Fox. And until someone blinks, until a deal is finalized and an announcement ready, Bears fans and the city of Chicago will have to tolerate the uncomfortable sounds of silence.

yall know goddam well Bryant made that catch - the refs botched things once again by using the obviously incorrect "he didnt make any discernible football move" horseshit as their justification for calling it not a catch.

really?

you mean catching, switching hands, getting a hand on the defender, taking 3 steps in the process, and lunging the football forward all does somehow NOT constitute "a football move?"

:hand: get that bet ass ref correction bullshit out of here. since he made not one not two but at least 3 "football moves," thats beyond a reasonable doubt that "possession was established" and thus the "going to the ground" was of a runner's nature and not in the act of making a reception -

DALLAS ball at the 1 yard line, as was the call on the field iirc.

And I was rooting for green bay.

overturns should happen on a reasonable doubt, not a whim, or where the big money is on a given game. they shouldnt be overturned with no obvious reason, or no reason at all, like the whole reason Dallas was even at the game this week to begin with.

And you're totally incorrect. But welcome back.

:hand: just because the league decided to enshrine a bastardization they needed to implement when the right team needed to win, forever changing the game....doesnt mean its right.

those fucks hacked the game so it makes things like this even easier, making the gray area that much wider and more substantial, the refs have that much more room to maneuver to call a game for the big money when it counts.

I dont care everyone saying *holds nose* "well that's the rule and that's how they changed it so it doesnt matter if you dont like it"

fuck you, the nfl is ruining the game and its getting to the point where I'm starting to just not like the game because the refs cant stay the fuck out of any game that has a significant amount of money on the line.

whether it was the refs helping the ravens beat the steelers, or the cowboys beat the lions, and the packers defeat the cowboys...they take every fkn opportunity they find.

but sometimes there's no room for the refs to fuck with a game and nothing happens that's vague enough, like the colts broncos game.

fuck the rigged ass nfl.

not exactly, I'm saying the rule was altered purposefully to give the refs a gray area excuse to decide whatever the hell they want and make up a plausible excuse for it.

and by whatever the hell they want, I mean however the big money that tips the extra into their back pockets say to sway the game.

but we must of course give the appearance of propriety

money corrupts everything, and the nfl is no exception.

"by the rules" doesnt mean quite so much when you have a rule specifically altered to let refs decide upon a whim how to call something, make up whatever explanation they please, it doesnt even need to be coherent (like "he didnt make a football move") and that's that..the betting tables go the way the fix calls it, and some people I guess enjoy this perverted "nfl"

I'm glad you agree that in any sane iteration of the nfl, and by pretty much 99% of its history, that is hands down a reception.
