To be honest, I think they should give Donovan McNabb a good look for the short term while Cutler's on ice. If he can fit in the scheme, he can do far better than whatever the rookie's name is that you guys have in there right now. I know he's not people's favorite by a long shot, but he still has a good arm and he wants to play.

Bears not interested in signing another quarterback

The Bears know they need to get better play from their quarterback position. But they’re not going to send a limo into Chicago to pick up Donovan McNabb or a private jet to Mississippi for Brett Favre.

Coach Lovie Smith believes that the solution instead involves continuing to develop Caleb Hanie, rookie Nathan Enderle and recent pick-up Josh McCown while Jay Cutler recovers from thumb surgery.

“We have our quarterbacks here now,” Smith said. “We have three of them here now and another one is rehabbing who will come back hopefully this year. Those are our quarterbacks.

“We’re going to make improvements with our group like all positions. We’re not looking on the outside. We’re not having a quarterback tryout or anything like that. These are our guys and we’re all going to get better.”

Although Hanie struggled in Sunday’s 10-3 loss to the Chiefs, the Bears believe that he gives them a better chance to win than a street free agent who would need several weeks to learn Mike Martz’s high-volume offense.

In his second NFL start, Hanie completed just 11 of 24 passes for 133 yards with three interceptions and a 23.8 passer rating against the Chiefs. But he had one touchdown pass nullified by a penalty and a second potential score turn into an interception after his perfect pass squirted through Roy Williams’ hands.

“Caleb’s our quarterback and he, like the rest of our team, didn’t play well yesterday,” Smith said. “But give us a little bit of time. There’s this week. Hopefully we’ll see some improvements this week for our football team.”

Say what you want, he's done a credible job stepping in as a 3rd string backup. TBH, I' rather have him in any day the Leinart. I was happy as hell when Leinart got "hurt" and couldn't play anymore. He's got no heart at all, and I wish Texans hadn't signed him.

KevinD
12-16-2011, 04:40 AM
I honestly think he could be a good, maybe great QB if he worked daily with the rest of the starters. To come in as he has, and yes, make some mistakes, but, to help secure two wins (esp last week when he was let loose at the end of the game) shows to me that he has lots of potential. I'd like to see Leinart gone, Yates as backup, with playtime when and if the Texans have a good lead, and groom him to replace Schaub maybe. Other than that, He'd probably be best off going to a team that would start him, and work the offense around him.

What game was that? I watched the Texans lose today. The rookie made a few mistakes (excusable for a 3rd stringer in a pressure situation) but our recievers and the defence as a whole really lost the game today. I was hoping that perhaps the Broncs could take out the Pat, but nope. Now for the late game,,hmm, do the chargers have a chance against the Ravens? Not f-ing likely. Too bad the Texans play Thurs night against Indy. (I don't have NFL network anymore thanks to the wife) <keeps fingers crossed that the Texans can at least finish the reg season 11-5, 'cause I don't think they have a chance in hell in the playoffs.

There's no such thing as backing into the playoffs my friend! When the final gun sounded to end the season, the Broncos had the best record in their division. This makes them a legitimate champion.

Let's just say that the Tebow of the last 3 games is more likely the norm

Yup, Mendenhal is out for the rest of the season...torn ACL

There's no such thing as backing into the playoffs my friend! When the final gun sounded to end the season, the Broncos had the best record in their division. This makes them a legitimate champion.

They controlled their own destiny, they were at home, playing a team that in all honesty was not very good, and yet they lost and then needed the Raiders to lose in order to secure the playoff berth. I will give you that the Broncos are the division champions and that, as I said, I'll take the playoff appearance, but no matter how you look at it, the Broncos got lucky.

If the NFL embraced the BCS instead of these silly playoffs …
By MJD | Shutdown Corner

The holidays have passed, but there's no more important time to give thanks than right now, because we, as NFL fans, have playoffs. The alternative, the system that our semi-pro league uses, has provided some fun along the way (specifically, 70), but is generally useless.

To illustrate how much we have to be thankful for, I thought we might take a look at what the NFL postseason would look like if the NFL used the Bowl Championship Series. Here we go.

http://i.imgur.com/kUpa1.jpg

Super Bowl: Green Bay Packers vs. New Orleans Saints

It's the Packers and the Saints for all the marbles, which is a tough break for the 49ers (and the Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Texans, Falcons, Lions and pretty much everyone else), but that's the way it goes.

The 49ers were close to getting the bid, but their losses came later in the season, and the pollsters are notoriously biased against West Coast teams. Sorry. Also, Drew Brees and the Saints are a little more media-friendly, and this way, the media gets to promote the Brees vs. Rodgers Heisman showdown.

And yes, it's a rematch of a game that's already happened this season, but we care nothing about that. But take solace, 49ers fans …

Other BCS Bowls:

Bud Light Bowl: San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots

… because you get to compete for the title of Bud Light Bowl champions. It won't be easy, though, because you have to play against the Patriots, due to the AFC East's automatic tie-in with the Bud Light Bowl. Also, NFL BCS games aren't under the same financial restrictions as college BCS games, so their gift baskets can contain anything. Participants here get a six-pack of Bud Light and a small private island.

Doritos Bowl: Denver Broncos vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

By virtue of winning their division by tiebreaker, the Broncos became eligible for BCS selection, and the Doritos Bowl was thrilled to get Tim Tebow in their game. Coincidentally, Tim Tebow will also be the star of a FocusOnTheFamily.com commercial in his own bowl game. Huge ratings are expected.

Non-BCS Bowls:

Hyundai Bowl: Baltimore Ravens vs. Detroit Lions

It's a shame that Baltimore won its division and still got shut out of the BCS, but it's just that the Steelers fans travel so well. The Doritos people couldn't say no to the Tebow vs. Roethlisberger, good vs. evil storyline. Also, from what I understand, the Ford family isn't thrilled with their placement in the Hyundai Bowl and will refuse the trophy if they win it.

Pepsi Bowl: Houston Texans vs. New York Giants

No one really cares about the Pepsi Bowl.

T-Mobile Bowl: New York Jets vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Jets, despite their massively disappointing season, did become bowl eligible with their eighth win of the season. A handful of players could be suspended for that game, though, because that team is just a mess. Also, it's a little-known rule that Notre Dame becomes NFL bowl-eligible in any season where they win seven games, and lose their college bowl game by less than 14 points. No one is sure why this rule exists, because it's not 1941 anymore.

Jerry Jones Bowl, presented by Jerry Jones: Oakland Raiders vs. Dallas Cowboys

This bowl was created just four days ago, when Jerry Jones decided he wanted his team in a bowl game, and when he said to Roger Goodell, "Hey, I'll give you a bunch of money if we can be in a bowl game," the league couldn't resist. They also got special permission to paint Jerry Jones' face at midfield, just this once. Also, as part of the gift basket for players in this game, Jerry Jones will put everyone on a cruise ship and sail them into international waters, where they'll be able to kill a bald eagle or a human being (player's choice), consequence-free.

Pizza Hut Bowl: Cincinnati Bengals vs. Atlanta Falcons

The Pizza Hut people were very disappointed that the Dolphins didn't qualify for the postseason, because they had planned a promotion where fans would get to vote at halftime on whether or not they could trade Reggie Bush for an actual slice of pizza. If enough fans voted yes, Bush would actually be banished from the game at halftime, and everyone would receive a free coupon for a slice of Pizza Hut pizza. But the Dolphins didn't qualify, so now, again, no one cares.

E-Trade Bowl: Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Diego Chargers

This bowl is unnecessary in nearly every way, but you know, this happened (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AkvQCIuYH7br7jAh8brqOMkKdCkA;_ylu=X3oDMTFkbGs 1M3FnBG1pdANCbG9nIEJvZHkEcG9zAzkEc2VjA01lZGlhQmxvZ 0JvZHlBc3NlbWJseQ--;_ylg=X3oDMTJzajBpYW5oBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRw c3RhaWQDNDE1MTk2YWEtMDVlYy0zNjRjLTlhNzQtY2Q1ZmI1OW Q1ZjNmBHBzdGNhdANuZmwEcHQDc3RvcnlwYWdlBHRlc3QD;_yl v=0/SIG=12i0ctd6h/EXP=1327023862/**http%3A//rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recap%3Fgid=201112310064), so screw it. The media has dubbed this one the "Can You Believe We Didn't Get Fired?" Bowl, and it should be a good one. Norv Turner hasn't been very good in the playoffs, but in the E-Trade Bowl? Norv Turner is nearly unbeatable in the E-Trade Bowl.

Giants vs PackersDuh, Packers.

While Steelers fans live out the five stages of grief after their team’s Sunday loss, NewsFeed is pleased to see that Pittsburgh’s mayor has a sense of humor about it. On Tuesday, Steel City mayor Luke Ravenstahl Tebowed to come clean on a bet he made with Denver’s mayor about the game’s outcome.

It was Tim Tebow’s stunning 80-yard touchdown pass in the first seconds of overtime that forced Ravenstahl to don a Broncos jersey and take a knee – though we suspect his prayer was not exactly one of thanksgiving. In fact, Ravenstahl hoped he’d never have to imitate the rival quarterback. “However, we’re good sports here in Pittsburgh, and I want to congratulate Denver on a great win,” he said before bowing down, elbow on knee, in front of Pittsburgh’s skyline Tuesday morning.

Mayor Ravenstahl made a public bet with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock over the phone as a bit of friendly jeering before Sunday’s AFC wild-card game. Ravenstahl agreed to sport Tebow’s #15 jersey and “tebow” in a public place in Pittsburgh if the Steelers lost. Hancock would have had to appear at a Denver event wearing a Steelers jersey and a “Terrible Towel,” the golden-colored rag that Steelers fans wave to rally their team. But there was no chance for a Steelers rally Sunday after Tebow’s booming pass to Demaryius Thomas put an end to the sudden-death overtime, with the Broncos clinching the wild-card spot 29-23.

The win may have been a long shot, but from the moment the two agreed on the bet Friday, Hancock seemed confident that Ravenstahl would be the one bowing down in the end. “We’re looking forward to seeing that photo of Mayor Ravenstahl ‘Tebowing’… say at Heinz Field?” Mayor Hancock joked just after the mayors finalized the terms of the bet. While Tebowing in the Steelers’ house would be the equivalent of sacrilege to any self-respecting football fan, taking a knee in front of the entire skyline – and hence, everything Ravenstahl’s city stands for – seems somehow more humiliating.

You can try to rile me up all you want, but it won't work ;)

The Broncos are playing with house money right now, so whatever happens, happens. First, they weren't even supposed to make the playoffs, yet they did. Then they were given no chance to beat the Steelers, yet they did. And now they are given even less of a shot to beat the Pats. So if they lose, it's what was "supposed" to happen to a team that supposedly doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs. But if they find a way to win again, just playing with more house money is all. :)

That, and as much as I like him, Yates decision to throw into double and triple coverage. Our defense most definitely did it's job. The only real points the Ravens got were off of turnovers.
I'm having trouble understanding why when the run game was working so well, Kubiack didn't run more options or screens. That's his favorite stuff after all.

After the Green Bay Packers came up short on Sunday, the state of Wisconsin may be feeling like a bunch of losers. But never fear, cheeseheads. Though the Packers couldn't win a playoff game the season after winning the Super Bowl, Miss Wisconsin did come through for you. Kenosha's own Laura Kaeppeler was crowned Miss America on Saturday night.

Though her platform is to support children of incarcerated parents, Kaeppeler used her spotlight to try to grab the attention of another beloved Dairylander. During Saturday night's pageant, Kaeppeler introduced herself by saying, "If you're watching, Aaron Rodgers, call me."

On Saturday night, Rodgers was preparing to lose to the Giants, so he might have missed Kaeppeler's greeting. But with the Packers out of the playoffs, he has plenty of time on his hands. Give the girl a call, Aaron. Though you couldn't lead the team to a playoff victory, you do have an open phone line to Miss America. Who needs the MVP trophy after that?

Well, if nothing else, Kelly Clarkson did a pretty good job with the national anthem.

I thought it was utterly friggin terrible! She had a bunch of snare drums rolling and still couldnt even come remotely close to keeping it in time, wailing notes alllll oooooover the place....

Its just about to the point where nobody can perform this song properly anymore, everyone thinks that butching the shit out of the entire thing is just taking "poetic license" - no, its called you sucking and not being able to perform the national anthem! Go back to your practice room, get a damn metronome and a recording device and listen to yourself - and leave your ego outside the listening room biach!

it was like one of my ol weekend warrior guitarists....duuuude that was like the best we every played this!
*listens to recording of it*
actually, that kinda sucked, man...
*WW hangs head*

/rant

as to the game...drops, drops, few missed throws...

but of course saying eli wouldnt have done shit without nicks and what's his face would be just like saying brady wouldnt be doing shit without pretty much every single one of his targets being an excellent receiver. as much as I wanted the patriots to lose, I wanted Eli to lose more

She did a fine job on the Anthem.

no, I watched it and cringed and wondered yet again why a miltimillion dollar paid professional singer cannot get herself a conductor and a voice coach to train for a huge performance that tens of millions of people will be watching.

Phil's got a powerhouse voice, but I dont know that he'd be faithful to the writing either. I'm just saying - when people hack the national anthem to smithereens, I dont care how good your voice is, if you're wailing all over the place and making it a veritable whipping one's ego out and pissing on the lawn in front of you, then the anthem sounds like garbage.

I'm a perfectionist musician of over 25 years and I thought she did ok. Maybe not the best but far better than the butcher jobs of recent memory during the nfl and mlb playoffs.

true, I wasnt speaking to those other butchings - but she has an amazing voice, a good rendition would have been golden, but she couldnt even be arsed to stay anything close to on tempo. speeds up at whim, slows down on whim, notes all over the place - she couldnt even get past oh say can you see, it was butched right from the getgo, such a turnoff....notes were "on key" for sure, but its her own little idiom where but the poem was written and never made into a song...all over the place. C+ at best.

 Lance...that would require me getting my shit in order and in gear, as well as those of teammates...oh, and filling all of those empty spots. we'll see if that ever happens
