Yeah we do. And it's name is Gary Kubiak.
That first half was just pitiful. The Chargers just aren't that good of a team. Our D still has problems with defending the passing game. I also don't like Schaub. I just don't like the way he reads (or doesn't) plays, and I still loathe the offensive play calling.

In the NFL, few teams are ever really that bad, and few teams are ever really that good. The gap between the best and worst team in the NFL is never as outrageous as, say, Alabama against Florida International.

But there's a perfect NFL mismatch storm coming, and it's Jacksonville at Denver in Week 6.

Denver, behind blazing hot quarterback Peyton Manning, is beating opponents by an amazing 22 points per game. Jacksonville's ineptitude is even more incredible than the Broncos' greatness. The Jaguars are getting outscored by 24.5 points per game.

So what happens when this season's best 16-0 candidate hosts the best 0-16 candidate? A predicted 28-point spread, the largest in the history of the NFL, according to R.J. Bell of the gambling information site Pregame.com.

While enormous point spreads are fairly common on Saturday, the NFL's parity ensures that they're rare on Sunday. This past week, the only double-digit spread was Denver favored by 10.5 over Philadelphia. The only other spread higher than a touchdown was Indianapolis by eight points, over Jacksonville. Having 13 of 15 games expected to be decided by less than a touchdown is the NFL's dream scenario.

NFL teams should never be favored to beat another team of professionals by four touchdowns. To put minus-28 into perspective, the Seahawks opened as 19.5-point favorites over Jacksonville in Week 3, and that was the 10th largest NFL spread in history. Seattle won 45-17, covering the spread.

There's still a week to go before the biggest mismatch in NFL history, and perhaps the line might move a bit based on what happens in Week 5. But it isn't going to change that much. And the real question is: Even with 28 points, does anyone have the heart to bet on the Jaguars?

Both of Jax's lines suck. Gabbert sucks. Shorts would be good if he had a decent QB throwing to him. But forget all that. When you're a RB behind an O-line that sucks, there's just not much room for you to run. And MJD is their best player. It's sad really. Local Jax news station sports analysts were wondering yesterday after the game if any of their current players would still be on the roster come November.

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2013/10/02/49er-saftey-says-hes-changing-legal-name-to-donte-hitner/

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner said via Twitter this week that he officially plans on changing his name to Hitner.

Apparently the hard-hitting defensive back is fed up with being fined by the NFL. He was just dinged $21,000 for a hit on St. Louis Rams wideout Chris Givens last Thursday. The name change appeared to be a joke when he first brought it up on Twitter, saying he’d need permission from his mother, Deborah, to do so:

But he soon began promoting t-shirts that read #LegalHitner. And as of Wednesday morning, Whitner said the move was official:

The Associated Press confirmed that Whitner has filed paperwork in Ohio through his lawyer to formally change his name to Hitner by removing the ‘W’.

Whitner indicated that he would love to debut his new name for Sunday night’s prime-time game with the Houston Texans, but realistically it will probably take another week before his new name is on the back of his uniform, which would be the Oct. 13 game at Arizona.

He has also been in touch with Nike to determine how many No. 31 Whitner jerseys are still in retail stores and whether he might need to financially contribute to make the switch.

As CBS Sports has observed, this isn’t the 1st time an NFL star has changed grabbed headlines for a name change.

Well the Texans just demonstrated all that is wrong with the team. Other than some good runs in the 1st qtr, everything else was just pitiful on the Offense. Complete inability to produce in the red zone, turnovers, and my pet peeve (even when Texans are doing good) the absolutely predictable play calling by Kubiak. Even the commenters are finally talking about it. I feel bad that Schaub got hurt. Yates did about what you could expect (again, given the play calling) They keep saying Keenan (sp?) is ineligible, but not why. I'm thinking, hey, let's get an offensive coordinator, and give Keenan a shot. Even when Texans O is at their best, they aren't capable of coming back from 3 scores down.

While they may have gotten rid of Chilly, it seems like they kept all of his play calling philosophies. *Always* run on first down. *Always* attempt to pass for 7+ yards on 3rd down. Rush 4 every down. The people that make the play calls for the vikes are the biggest problem the team has. What, AP had 10 carries last game? Fk those people that make the play calls.

I hope they get one in London and I hope it's a unanimous vote by the owners. Then, when some team has to play a Sunday night game and then their next game is a Thursday night game in London and the owner of the team starts bitching he can be told to just STFU.

Supposedly the players have already started protesting a London team. They said any players drafted to (or traded to) the London team would decline the offer and choose not to play.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- With his penchant for poetry, Todd Christensen never fit the Raiders' renegade mold. But that didn't keep him from becoming one of the team's best all-time tight ends.

A five-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl winner, Christensen died from complications during liver transplant surgery Wednesday. He was 57.

Christensen's son, Toby Christensen, said his father died at Intermountain Medical Center near his home in Alpine, Utah. He had been waiting for 10 months for a donor liver.

After a stellar career at running back for BYU from 1974-77, Christensen was a second-round pick for the Dallas Cowboys in the 1978 NFL draft.

He was waived by the Cowboys after breaking his foot in training camp but landed the next year with the Raiders, where he played for 10 seasons at tight end and won Super Bowls in 1981 and 1984.

In 1983, he had 92 catches, setting the NFL record at the time for tight ends. He finished the season with 1,247 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns.

He broke his own record three seasons later with 95 catches. He finished his pro career with 467 catches for 5,872 yards and 41 touchdowns - a TD record for a Raiders tight end. He surpassed 1,000 yards receiving in three different seasons.

''Todd was an excellent football player and was prolific in the passing game,'' said former Raiders coach Tom Flores. ''He was a hybrid tight end, an H-back before it became a football term. He started out as a special teamer and was named our special teams captain right away while playing behind Raymond Chester and Dave Casper. He then helped us win Super Bowls.''

Former Raiders teammate James Lofton posted to Twitter on Wednesday: ''He was truly great both on and off the field.''

Christensen, at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, was a thoughtful son of a professor. He even read his own poetry at a press conference for the AFC Championship game against Seattle before the Super Bowl in 1984.

''I thought you might be interested in something that I wrote in training camp that I think is apropos here,'' Christensen told the assembled media. ''This is something I've written concerning the Raider organization, and this is entitled, 'A Destiny to Win.'''

Upon completing the 15-verse poem, many of the reporters gathered burst into applause. It was clear why Christensen's nickname was Renaissance Man.

''I remember Todd as always using big words and quoting famous authors and poets. He was comical at times because no one knew what he was talking about,'' Flores said in a statement released by the Raiders. ''I hadn't seen much of him lately but miss the fun, great times we all shared as a Raider family.''

Christensen played on four Western Athletic Conference championship teams for BYU, catching 152 passes for 1,568 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also had 1,089 yards rushing and seven scores. He was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1992.

''He had great skill,'' BYU football Hall of Fame coach LaVell Edwards told the Daily Herald of Provo, Utah. ''He ran the ball well and he caught the ball extremely well. He had excellent ability in all areas and those are the things that stand out.''

After his retirement, Christensen went into broadcasting but he also tried to break into baseball - trying out for the Oakland Athletics when he was 33. And he even gave acting a shot, playing a game show host in an episode of TV's ''Married With Children.''

Christensen was a color commentator for the NFL on NBC from 1990-94, and also worked for ESPN and the now-defunct MountainWest Sports Network before handling Navy games for CBS Sports Network in the 2012 season.

Christensen was a devout Mormon who didn't drink, and his family believes his liver problems started 25 years ago after a ''botched'' gall bladder operation, his son told The Associated Press.

''I've been receiving hundreds of texts, Facebook postings and emails - from everybody with a story about my dad,'' Toby Christensen said.

A native of Pennsylvania, Christensen's family moved to Eugene, Ore., when he was a child and he became a standout at Sheldon High School. He was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

Christensen is survived by his wife, Kathy, and four sons. The family was making plans for a funeral as early as Saturday at a local Mormon church ward house in Alpine.

Soldier Field Concessions Shut Down During Delay Because Bears Fans Bought Too Much Beer

Read more: http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2013/11/soldier-field-concessions-shut-delay-bears-fans-bought-much-beer.html#ixzz2l0em6sN8

http://cdn.ksk.uproxx.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/concourse-449x600.jpeg

With Ravens-Bears delayed by inclement weather, fans crammed in the Soldier Field concourse are forced to distract themselves for a couple hours until the storm passes. Naturally, that means drinking all beer available to them. Unfortunately, the supply is being cut off because the worryworts in stadium security are concerned that TOO much beer is being sold.

But I thought this was America?
------------------------

 awesome

http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2013/11/update-happens-stop-selling-beer.html

If you’re an NFL fan trapped in a stadium concourse, options are limited. You can either 1) start drinking at a far more rapid pace than you would have otherwise or 2) come up with creative ways to pass the time. And if you’ve ever been to an NFL game, you know both options are fundamentally flawed.

So when Soldier Field concession stands were shut down earlier this afternoon due to an overwhelming run on beer, which presents plenty of security risks, that only left one option. And a whole new set of security risks, judging by the performance of this Ravens fan.

the way I see this, it was an interception by the time the ball was hovering over the 5 yd line and there was no way gronk was coming back for that ball, with 2 defenders in between him and the ball.

does that bit of arm-wrap constitute interference, especially since there was no way in hell gronk was getting his hands on it? look at all the momentum from the run, that is the only reason Kuechly half ran into him, their arms were briefly in contact just before gronk tried changing direction.

It doesn't matter. At the very least it's defense holding. 5 yards, automatic first down, and the game continues for one more play because it can't end on a defensive penalty.

FBD
11-19-2013, 05:09 PM
:-k even if the arm wrap comes when the ball is 2 feet away from interception and the intended receiver has absolutely no play on the ball? And doesnt holding require use of hands, I didnt see his hands grab gronk...and from there it could only be interference, and can it be interference if the intended receiver has no play on the ball? All of the contact was legal up to that point. I mean, after the ref threw the flag, the first thing he did was motion the other refs over to clarify.

"The flag was thrown for pass interference, not defensive holding. Whether or not the ball was catchable wouldn’t have factored into a defensive holding call. It was DPI, which was overturned because the ball was ruled to be uncatchable. If it was upheld, 1 yard line."

"Based on the replays, it seems clear the ball was in the air by time the contact started, so the holding call goes away and it becomes pass interference. It was a judgement call that he couldn’t have caught the pass. He was moving backwards near the back of the endzone, while the ball fell to the ground near the middle of the endzone, with a Panthers player between him and the ball. Seems clear to me he was never going to catch that ball. Uncatchable = no PI."

"Since the pick occurred between the QB and the receiver, the receiver had no chance to make a catch…so, as weird as it is, you really are allowed to mug a guy so long as a player between the mugging and the ball picks or deflects it. Picking up the flag was, as hard as it can be to wrap your head around, correct."

Peyton Manning really struggles in the cold, throws for only 397 yards and four touchdowns

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has not been thrilled to get questions about his struggles in cold weather.

It'll be a while before he fields any more.

The official temperature for kickoff in Denver was 18 degrees, and it dipped after that as the sun set behind the mountains. And Manning looked like he was playing in the middle of summer.

Manning set a Broncos record with 39 completions, and had 397 yards and four touchdowns as Denver beat Tennessee 51-28. The Broncos had never scored more than 50 points in a game before this season. They've scored at least 50 points three times this season, the first NFL team to do that since the 1969 Vikings.

Manning let it know that he wasn't thrilled with the criticism of his cold-weather performance.

"Whoever wrote that narrative can shove it where the sun don't shine," Manning told Denver radio station 850 KOA after the game, according to the Denver Post.

Jason Cole - National Football Post

Unless quarterback Jay Cutler is willing to take a club-friendly deal on his next contract, the Chicago Bears are likely to let Cutler become a free agent in the offseason, a source said Wednesday. The Bears would do that even at the risk of losing him.

“(The Bears) believe in (coach Marc) Trestman after what they’ve seen from (backup quarterback Josh) McCown,” the source said. “Between his system and the two big receivers (Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery), you have a system where a quarterback can flourish. I don’t know if McCown is going to be the starter (next season), but I think the team would be fine letting Cutler test the market and then go draft someone if he left.”

The goal for the Bears is to not overpay for Cutler, who could be looking for a deal in the range of $20 million a year, particularly if the Bears put the franchise tag on him and then try to negotiate a long-term deal.
Chicago Genera Manager Phil Emery said last week that he was uncomfortable with the idea of using the franchise tag on a quarterback.

“The franchise tag for the quarterback position has unique challenges because the average comes out to be such a big portion of your cap and your total money available to spend on other players to acquire to help your team,” Emery said.

“With the franchise tag being so high for the quarterback position, to use it and not sign the individual to a long-term deal hurts the team because you lose the ability to prorate the amount of guaranteed salary over the length of the contract. Proration lowers the salary cap number in relation to that player's contract. Obviously the lower the number in relation to the salary cap, the more players you can sign to help your team reach its goals.”

Denver's defense was PATHETIC last night, and the offense wasn't much better. This is a team that thinks it can win the Super Bowl? They went from being the best team in the AFC to having a 1/2 game lead in their division and likely facing a trip to Foxboro in the playoffs, if they can even make it that far. What an absolute joke the defense is, and has been, this year. To look that bad at home? Unacceptable and unforgivable.

You have Lacy. Cactus has Jamal Charles.

And to be fair, if Cactus was actually actively paying attention, he would have been undefeated this season.

somebody needs to teach miami some fuggin CLOCK MANAGEMENT.

they are so used to being behind that they're hurrying up in the last few minutes of the game and gave the patriots an eternity to come back and beat them. 9 times outta 10 brady does it. miami lucked the fug out.

Every time Troy Aikman's on TV, I'm expecting to watch him tear down Tony Romo.

i especially liked it today when he was saying that the saints kicker needed have the ball get to at least the 30 yard line before attempting a game tying field goal against the panthers near the end of regulation.

only problem was the saints were down by 4 at the time
