HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Most would agree a parent’s top priority is to keep their child safe.
That's why one mother's actions are creating some strong reactions.
Twenty-one-year-old Courtney Hardy of Chesapeake was arrested Wednesday in her car in a Go-Mart parking lot on Huntington's west side.
Huntington police say they found her drifting in and out of consciousness with her arm tied off and a syringe plunged in a vein.
Her 2-year-old daughter was right next to her in the passenger seat.
The child was taken by Child Protective Services and is now staying at her grandparents’.
Hardy’s grandmother Carol Damron talked with WSAZ.com Thursday. She says the family is devastated by what she's done and just grateful the 2-year-old girl is ok.
“It’s one of the roughest things you can go through short of death,” Damron said.
Damron says Hardy's had a drug problem for a while now and was in rehab not long ago but did not complete it.
She says Hardy was a good high school student who was very bright and could have done anything she wanted. She says the family has worked hard to help treat her addiction, and hopefully after this wakeup call, she'll be more willing to help herself.
Hardy's grandmother also says Hardy was well aware that she had a serious problem and wanted to get off the drugs because she wanted to be a good mother, but ultimately the addiction just proved too powerful.
Behavioral Rehab Specialist Scott Harrison says Hardy shouldn't be judged too harshly for her actions, because drug addicts lose the ability to think rationally.
"You might as well throw rational thinking out once you're addicted,” he said. “You're absolutely powerless."
Hardy is charged with felony child neglect and misdemeanor DUI with a minor in the vehicle.
