A 9-year-old Dover boy who asked his mother to let him drive to school was at the wheel of their car Tuesday morning, with his mother in the passenger seat, police said.
After the boy pulled into the parking lot of W. Reily Brown Elementary School, at 360 Webbs Lane, he got out while his mother, Tammy S. Oneal, took the wheel of their 1990 Toyota Corolla and drove off, according to court records.
Witnesses told school officials and notified police.
At the time of the 8:10 a.m. incident, "numerous children, parents and school employees were present," police said in court records.
Oneal, 34, of the 200 block of Webbs Lane, was charged with reckless endangering and endangering the welfare of a child, Dover police Capt. Tim Stump said.
She was released on $1,000 unsecured bail.
"He was apparently bugging his mother to let him drive to school," Stump said Wednesday.
Oneal told officers she has allowed her son to drive since he was 5 in a field near their former home in Magnolia, Stump said.
"It was an absolutely irresponsible decision made by the parent to allow her 9-year-old to drive," Stump said. "Not only is she putting her son at danger, but everyone else as well."
Oneal did not return telephone calls from The News Journal.
Stump said the child drove about a quarter of a mile on the same street to the school.
"It was just a poor decision," he said.
