Sale's gonna miss his 2nd start in a row now though :|

I don't think he's hurt, I am guessing they are giving him 2 starts off to help make sure he doesn't fade.

If you would have told me that Alex Cora in his first ever managerial job in MLB would have the Red Sox performing like this, I would have laughed at you. What he's done there is just phenomenal. We'll have to wait and see until next year whether it's a 'beginner's luck' fluke or not though.

There’s bad umpiring, and then there’s what took place Monday night in the Southeast Regional tournament for the 2018 Little League World Series.

With Georgia leading Alabama in the second inning, Georgia batter Chase Fralick began trotting to first base after a 3-0 pitch missed high. Clearly displeased with Fralick’s premature exit from the batter’s box, the home plate umpire called a very late strike, prompting Fralick to turn around.

If that weren’t bad enough, the same thing happened on the next pitch, except the ball was even more outside and the umpire’s call was made even more egregiously late.

Listen, we understand umpires don’t want batters showing them up, and it’s not a bad idea to keep little leaguers in check. Those calls were complete garbage, though, and that Umpire should be ashamed of himself.

It's impressive enough to double up a runner with a 321-foot throw, but to do it by throwing out the runner at first base?

A's center fielder Ramon Laureano did just that in Saturday night's 7-0 victory against the Angels.

In the third inning, Laureano tracked down a drive from Justin Upton at the warning track in the left-center field gap, running 76 feet in 4.4 seconds, according to MLB.com.

After slamming on the brakes, Laureano turned and fired a strike on the fly to first baseman Mark Canha to double up Eric Young Jr., who had rounded second base when the ball was caught.
1028466523671748608
"The catch, I know I've made it before, but the throw is pretty crazy," Laureano said after the game. "It was a crazy play, a crazy moment. I was shocked."

So were his teammates.

"That's the best throw I've ever seen," A's shortstop Marcus Semien said, "at least the farthest throw I've ever seen on the line."

According to Statcast, the throw was clocked at 91.2 mph.

A's outfielders have a recent history of making ridiculous throws against the Angels, specifically former Oakland outfielder Yoenis Céspedes.

Remember this one from June 10, 2014? The victim then was Howie Kendrick.

My thought when I saw that throw over the weekend was, "amazing catch...great fucking throw... but that's a shitty baseball play". That's an extremely low-percentage throw and probably slower than a hard relay. He should have been out by a mile, but was almost safe.

Firsts can be few and far between deep into MLB careers.

But Chicago Cubs utility player Ben Zobrist, a 16-year veteran of the League, managed to snag one. He had never been ejected, at any level of professional baseball, ever – that’s 1,562 game in the majors alone – until the ninth inning of the Cubs vs. Brewers game Tuesday afternoon.

The mild-mannered 37-year-old couldn’t hold his anger in any longer after home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi made a couple of questionable strike calls throughout the game. So in the ninth inning, he unleashed the most Ben Zobrist burn of all-time, getting him booted.

Zobrist told Cuzzi: “That’s why we want electronic strike zones.” And that was that.

And speaking of pennant races, just a little bench clearer last night in the Giants/Dodgers game.

“When I missed the pitch, I knew I thought it was the best pitch that Watson was gonna throw me,” Puig told reporters through a translator after the game. “So I was a little upset, and [Hundley] told me to stop complaining, get back into the box. And when I got in his face, he told me to also get out of his face. So that's when I got upset.

"I didn't like that he was telling me what to do, and then he said some words to me in English that I really can't repeat,” Puig added. “So that is why I was upset.”

The Texas Rangers did something that hasn’t been done since the Dodgers still played in Brooklyn, a loaf of bread only cost a nickel and the world was only two months removed from the Titanic tragedy.

Rangers teammates Jurickson Profar and Rougned Odor turned a triple play without retiring a batter for the first time since June 13, 1912, when those Brooklyn Dodgers did it against the Cincinnati Reds.

And, boy, was it confusing:
1030267794565357573
Profar seemed to be the only one who knew right away what really happened. Everyone from players to managers, umpires, broadcasters and fans required an explanation, so here goes: Profar short-hopped David Fletcher’s liner down the third-base line, stepped on the bag, tagged out Taylor Ward and threw to Odor for another force-out at second. Bing-bang-boom, see you in another 106 years.

“Every runner thought it was a line drive, that’s why we got a triple play,” said Profar, who thought it was a double play in the moment before realizing Kole Calhoun never left first base, via MLB.com. “I wasn’t sure why the runner at first base didn’t run either, so they thought it was a line drive.”

The Angels were leading 6-3 and threatening to put another crooked number on the board with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the fourth inning when Profar and Odor turned the triple play. The Rangers rallied with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out the comeback win.

“That was a real game-changer,” added Angels manager Mike Scioscia, via MLB.com. “Profar made a great play on it. Fletch hit the ball hard, and they got out of the fourth inning with no damage at a time when we were going to pad our lead and hopefully get far enough in front.”

In addition to being the first triple play in which the batter wasn’t retired since 1912, it was also just the third 5-4 triple play since the expansion era began in 1961, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Wrigley is a few blocks from Boy's Town and they have a large gay following. Laura Ricketts is daughter of ownership, part owner, lesbian and a gay rights (and anti Trump) activist.

As for Darvish, I am not making this up. The Score was discussing Darvish being done for the year and said, "at least that's off the table so we can move on". Addison Russell’s wife Melisa comes forward with details about years of abuse

Last year, Cubs shortstop Addison Russell‘s wife Melisa made an Instagram post in which she accused her husband of cheating on her. Melisa’s friend added a comment in which she alleged Addison had been physically abusive towards Melisa. Addison denied the allegations. Major League Baseball started an investigation, but Melisa chose not to cooperate. Addison was not punished and the issue mostly went away.

On Wednesday, Melisa posted on her WordPress blog, which is linked on her Instagram with over 44,000 followers. In the post, Melisa details years of emotional, verbal, and physical abuse from Addison. Addison’s behavior, as detailed by Melisa, checks many of the boxes listed by The National Domestic Violence Hotline. As the abuse went on, Melisa says she suffered from depression. Eventually, she filed for divorce and began to regain control of her life, ultimately gaining the courage to come forward with what she had been through.

Yeah, the whole second half of the season their offense kinda dried up. They were making a big deal that the Cubs only scored 2 runs in 22 innings the last 2 games, but that's how the season went more or less. They showed a stat that said the Cubs had 40 games this year where they scored either 1 or 0 runs, and that was tops in the Majors.

The Brewers are moving on to the NLCS, thanks in large part to the remarkable play of 38-year-old catcher Erik Kratz, who became the oldest player to make his postseason debut since Lave Cross in 1905 and immediately made his mark with five hits in two games, including an adventurous double.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Erik Kratz MLB hits in ...<br><br>2015: five<br>2016: eight<br>2017: two<br><br>2018 NLDS: five</p>&mdash; Andrew Simon (@AndrewSimonMLB) <a href="https://twitter.com/AndrewSimonMLB/status/1049063803512664066?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 7, 2018</a></blockquote>

A 38-year-old journeyman backup catcher making an impact for a team with World Series aspirations is truly a remarkable story. And yet, it all seems so familiar ...

Remember this guy?

https://i.imgur.com/kWMB5H3.gif

It's been two years since David Ross, then a 39-year-old catcher who never had more than 348 plate appearances in a season and was on his seventh Major League team, helped the Cubs end the 108-year World Series drought with an October for the ages. His home run off Andrew Miller was one of the many incredible moments of that legendary Game 7.

Ross immediately attained cult hero status, and with good reason. His 'Grandpa Rossy' persona meshed perfectly with the young core of the 2016 Cubs, and his infectious personality combined with his clutch on-field performance to become one of the faces of one of the most iconic teams in baseball history.

A David Ross-level outcome is certainly a lot to expect from Kratz and the Brewers, of course, and it is still early in October. But many of the same ingredients are in play. Nearly 40 years old? Check. On his seventh MLB team? Check. Exceptionally likable? Check.

As Milwaukee advances and Kratz continues to collect timely hits, his legend may grow similarly. And yet while Kratz's narrative may lack in terms of historical significance -- nothing can really top breaking the Cubs' World Series drought -- it is made up for in part by Kratz's personal journey to this point.

Unlike Kratz, who is making his postseason debut this October, Ross entered the 2016 postseason with four previous postseason appearances, including a run with the 2013 World Series champion Red Sox. He also had 883 games of Major League experience under his belt, compared to Kratz's 295 career games heading into this postseason. While Ross never made an All-Star team, he did have seasons of 21 and 17 home runs with the Reds in 2006 and 2007. Kratz has never hit more than nine in a season.

Ross was a seventh-round Draft pick in 1998 as a junior out of the University of Florida, one of the strongest Division I programs in the country. Kratz was a 29th-round selection by the Blue Jays as a senior out of Eastern Mennonite University, a small Division III school in Harrisonburg, Va. Ross made his MLB debut at age 25; Kratz debuted at age 30. Ross' journey to his postseason moment was unlikely. Kratz's was borderline inconceivable.

https://i.imgur.com/GJy4z4H.gif

While we knew Ross was retiring heading into the 2016 postseason, we do not know if this October run could be Kratz's last hurrah. But regardless of whether Milwaukee completes its run through the postseason with a World Series title, we'll be enjoying every Erik Kratz moment along the way. Because sometimes, the sequel can be just as good as the original.

Fuck the Brewers :hand:

"Throw the ball over the plate, CC," Porcello said. "I thought Angel Hernandez called a good game. You gotta get the ball over the white part of the plate and then you get the strikes called."

Kate Upton on Wednesday blasted commenters on Twitter for their "degrading" comments after she voiced her opinion about a fan-interference call during an Astros-Red Sox playoff game.
1052732148518514688
In the first inning for the Houston Astros in Game 4, Jose Altuve was denied a two-run homer after fans reaching for the ball interfered with Mookie Betts attempt to make a leaping catch.

“So if a player is IN the stands fans are suppose to move over?” Upton tweeted. “If those are the rules MLB shouldn’t let fans sit there. They didn’t reach over the fence. @MLB”

After a barrage of replies in and hostile comments, Upton shot back at her critics. She called out people for addressing her as “princess”, “honey” or “terrible girl.”
1052739847654264833
“Just because I have an opinion on the call doesn’t give you the right to be degrading & disrespectful because I’m a woman,” Upton tweeted.

Upton's husband is Justin Verlander, a pitcher for the Houston Astros.

"When he jumped up to reach for the ball, the spectator reached out of the stands and hit him over the playing field and closed his glove," West said to a pool reporter following Game 4. "He hit the ball to right field. He jumped up to try to make a catch. The man interfered with him over the playing field. That's why it's called spectator interference."

The play was reviewed by the umpires -- it was a crew chief review, not an Astros challenge -- and it was determined the call on the field "stands." Officially, that means MLB did not see enough evidence to overturn West's call.
1052734798848962562
MLB rule 3.16 covers spectator interference. Here is the relevant text:

In every case of spectator interference with a batted or thrown ball, the ball shall be declared dead and the baserunners can be placed where the umpire determines they would have been without the interference. When a spectator clearly prevents a fielder from catching a fly ball by reaching onto the field of play, the batter shall be ruled out. But no interference is called if a spectator comes in contact with a batted or thrown ball without reaching onto the field of play -- even if a fielder might have caught the ball had the spectator not been there.

As noted, the replay crew in New York could not determine whether the fans in right field did actually reach into the field of play to interfere with Betts and prevent him from making the catch. Is that debatable? Absolutely. Given the evidence, it seems to me whatever was called on the field was going to stand, and in this case West called fan interference.

"He just said that there was fan interference on the field, and my argument was more about the fact that the ball was leaving the yard, the trajectory was there," said Astros manager A.J. Hinch to Lauren Shehadi of TBS during an in-game interview. "Jose paid kind of the ultimate price for something out of his control. I'm not sure if Mookie makes that catch, he's a great athlete, but how it's an assumed out is unbelievable."

Remember Alex Bregman's controversial Instagram stunt before Game 3? David Price does.

Before Game 3, Alex Bregman trolled Nathan Eovaldi by posting a video of the Astros hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs off him in June. In the eighth inning of Game 5, Eovaldi got sweet revenge by striking out the Astros third baseman.

Price seemed to enjoy the moment even more than Eovaldi, as he can be seen appearing to tell "Post that!" from the dugout.

It wasn't the best showing for Clayton Kershaw or the Dodgers in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday. The Dodgers' ace gave up five runs on seven hits in four innings in Boston and Los Angeles dropped the first game of the series by a score of 8-4. (To be fair, Chris Sale wasn't his best on the other side, either.)

After the game, Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt didn't seem thrilled about the bullpen situation at Fenway Park. Honeycutt discussed how close the bullpen is to the outfield bleachers and may have indirectly suggested that Kershaw's lackluster performance in Game 1 could have been affected by a tense pregame warmup session in the pen.

From Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci:

Kershaw felt the full-on Fenway effect the minute he took to the bullpen mound to warm up for World Series Game 1 Tuesday night.

"Brutal. Pretty brutal," said Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, making his first trip to the Fens since 2010. Not much has changed. The rubber of the pitching mound in the visitors' bullpen is but three feet from the bleacher seats. "What I don't understand is why baseball allows it. You've got the rubber right there and people literally standing over you."

Honeycutt's not wrong in that both of Fenway's bullpens are located in very close proximity to the right field stands, and that provides plenty of access for fans to heckle members of the opposing team. And he's also not wrong that it can be pretty brutal at times.

But that's also just the way it goes. One of the beautiful things about baseball is that all the ballparks have their own little quirks and sometimes they find a way to provide a little home field advantage. (The visitor's clubhouse at Fenway Park is also laughably small and dingy.) Boston certainly isn't the only place that presents these unwelcoming challenges, and every opposing pitcher who has ventured into Fenway over the years has had to deal with the "brutal" nature of Sox fans being right in their kitchen as they warm up in the pen. It's just part of the deal.

Complaining and suggesting that Major League Baseball should make the Red Sox change it seems like a little much. And, if we're being honest, doing so after Game 1 of the World Series is probably not what you want to see if you're a Dodgers fan. That just oozes loser's mentality.

Luckily, if we know anything about Red Sox fans, they will undoubtedly be much quieter and more polite during Game 2 on Wednesday now that they know they're bothering the opponent.

Sox aren't on the Machado list either and that makes me happy. He's a cancer, despite what kind of numbers he's capable of putting up. I'd be on the fence about Kershaw. He's going to want a lot of money to leave LA and he's on the downside of his career. He can't afford to lose too much more velocity on his fastball. Unless he can become more like Greg Maddux was, a great junk ball pitcher.

I can't see any one team signing both of those guys really. You'd be looking at $500 million in contracts (or more) for what both of those guys are going to want. I've even see stories saying it might take a contract (long term) north of $300 million just for Machado. Don't know if a team would actually pay that though considering there is a fairly decent sized down side to him.

Sox in '04, without question since it was their first championship since 1918. Then the B's in '11. It was nice to see the Celtics win because it had been awhile, but I'd seen them win championships with Bird and that was amazing. But the Sox and 'the curse' and all the close calls (I cried when they lost the 1986 World Series  ), that was just amazing. Especially since they were down 0-3 to the vaunted Yankees and the Sox came back to slay that demon as well as get rid of that stupid 'curse' once and for all. And I've never been a Pats fan, not ever really. I mean the first Super Bowl for them in '02 was kinda cool because they were underdogs and no one really knew what a fucking tool Tom Brady was yet  and they were huge underdogs in that one.

Growing up in New England and being a fan of baseball, the Red Sox were always it. Being a BoSox fan is almost a way of life there.
