The Phillies have acquired OF Ben Revere from the Twins and gave up P Vance Worley and some minor league pitcher, Trevor May, for him.

They also acquired the Rangers' 3B Michael Young for RP Josh Lindblom and minor league pitcher Lisalverto Bonilla. Michael Young gets a full no-trade clause and the Rangers cover more than $10 million of his remaining $16 million.

I'm not too happy about Vance Worley leaving. Hope Revere's worth it.

I was surprised to see a national league team trade for Michael Young, where he can't be used mostly as a DH. He can still hit, but his fielding and throwing skills have diminished. The big rummer here is that the Rangers wanted to trade him in order to remove the temptation for Ron Washington to use him as much as he has in the past. I still blame Washington's decision to put Young in the field instead of being able to have him come off the bench as the main reason for the Rangers losing game 6 of the World Series against the Cardinals. Yeah, I still haven't gotten over it!

I'm not really surprised by it. We only gave up an ok middle inning relief pitcher and a pitching prospect. You guys are eating the majority of his remaining contract, and the word is that he's only going to be in Philly for a year. He's supposed to be a stop-gap measure until our 3rd base prospect in the minors is ready to join the majors in the season after next. We need somebody who can hit though, and Young can hit, regardless if his numbers dropped last year. Charlie Manuel can get his numbers up again.

The Red Sox signed Shane Victorino. 3 years @ $39 million.

Josh Hamilton goes to the LA Angels. 5 years @ $125 million. It sounds like Hamilton screwed the Rangers over in the process too. They're saying that he didn't give the Rangers a chance to match the offer.

Pitcher Kevin Correia goes to the Twins. 2 years @ $10 million.

The Yankees snag Kevin Youkilis for 1 year @ $12 million.

Shin Soo Choo goes to the Reds in a 3 team trade. The Reds, Diamondbacks, and the Indians all do some juggling on this one.

He promised that he would give them the chance to match any offer before signing. It's not what I would call the actions of a supposed Christian.

The Rangers are all set to fall back to a suck ass team. They have not signed any free agent of note, and lost a lot of offense.

Just imagine the Angels lineup with Pujols, Hamilton and Trout back-to-back-to-back!

Charlie once took a no hitter into the bottom of the ninth against California, leading 1-0. Left fielder George Wright misjudged a fly ball for a three base error. The next batter broke up the no hit bid, scoring the runner at third, and the Rangers eventually lost 2-1. The TV post-game show lasted 20 minutes and they signed off the air with a live shot of the dugout. George Wright was sitting by himself on the bench, still in uniform, completely in the dark as all the stadium lights had been turned off.

Charlie once tried a pick-off play by stepping off the rubber, quickly bending down and throwing the ball between his legs. The ball went wide of first, allowing the runner to take second. He never tried that move again.

They're supposed to ban him for the rest of this season and for the entire next season. He's set to appeal. If he does appeal he'll be able to play until the appeal process is over. What the commish does after he appeals remains to be seen. I believe the commish has the option to override ARod's appeal and ban him from baseball for life "in the best interests of the game". We'll see what happens.

A-Rod suspended but expected to play out season

Alex Rodriguez and 12 other major and minor leaguers were suspended Monday, but it's the New York Yankees third baseman who will be playing the remainder of the season.

Rodriguez was banned through the 2014 season effective Thursday but immediately appealed the penalty, allowing him to make his season debut Monday night in Chicago against the White Sox.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement states that the appeal is to be heard within 10 days by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz, who then has 25 days to render a decision when possible. However, MLB Player Association executive director Michael Weiner said on a conference call conflicts in Horowitz's schedule mean the process will not conclude until after the season. Union general counsel David Prouty said, "We're just starting to talk to the Commissioner's office about that."

"I am disappointed with the penalty and intend to appeal and fight this through the process," Rodriguez said in a statement released to media outlets, including USA TODAY Sports.

Said MLB in the statement announcing Rodriguez's suspension: "Rodriguez's discipline under the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program is based on his use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance-enhancing substances, including testosterone and Human Growth Hormone, over the course of multiple years," MLB said in a statement. "Rodriguez's discipline under the Basic Agreement is for attempting to cover-up his violations of the Program by engaging in a course of conduct intended to obstruct and frustrate the Office of the Commissioner's investigation. The suspension, which will become effective on Thursday, August 8, will cover 211 Championship Season games and any 2013 Postseason games in which Rodriguez otherwise would have been eligible to play."

I have no idea what's going to happen. Ruben Amaro Jr turned this team into such a train wreck after taking over as GM after the WS win in '08. I think he should be canned and someone else should be brought in. It's just gotten worse every following year.

But back to your question. Personally, I can't see the brass not giving Sandberg at least one full season to see what he can really do. I don't think the last quarter of a doomed season is indicative of a manager's abilities. We'll see.

Being born in Boston and growing up in New England makes you a member of Red Sox Nation if you even remotely like baseball. There was a time in my life where I thought I would never see the Sox win a World Series and now they have won 3 in the last 9 years. Absolutely amazing and this may have been the best one yet winning it at Fenway. This was truly a good group of guys and a team you could feel proud to root for. Congratz to the whole Red Sox organization for this worst to first turnaround.

The AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs are rebranding, and their new alternate logos are very heavy on...bacon.

The cap with a bacon strip on it will be worn during all Saturday home games. The bacon strip t-shirt you see above is a scratch and sniff t-shirt that smells like bacon. And the piping on those pants during Saturday games? Yeah, they're bacon strips.

This is absolutely amazing. The Iron Pigs are going to be gaining national awareness because of this rebrand, and the popularity of bacon is probably going to make this merchandise a national favorite as opposed to just an Allentown-area quirk.

With Sunday’s 5-2 victory, the Braves wrapped up a series sweep over the Cubs. The Cubs fell to 12-24, 10.5 games out of first place, dead last in the NL Central. But the embarrassment didn’t end there.

Sunday’s loss marked the 10,000th in club history for the Cubs, joining only the Phillies (10,480) and Braves (10,176) in the five-figure gang. The Cubs got there a bit sooner than they would have liked, having won games at a meager .417 clip since the start of the 2010 season.

The Pirates will become the next team to join the ignominious club with 55 more losses. And unless the Reds lose 142 games between Tuesday and the end of the 2015 season, the club won’t see a fifth member until 2016.

The list:

Phillies: 10,480 losses (.473 winning percentage)
Braves: 10,176 (.502)
Cubs: 10,000 (.511)
Pirates: 9,945 (.503)
Reds: 9,858 (.508)

CHICAGO (AP) — As his wheelchair rolled onto the dirt, Lennie Merullo took a good look around Wrigley Field.

It'd been a while since the last living person to play in a World Series game for the Chicago Cubs had visited the old ballpark.

"It's changed," he said Saturday, "but it hasn't changed a bit."

Now 97, Merullo wore a Cubs jersey and used a walker when he threw out the first pitch before Chicago beat the Miami Marlins 5-2.

Merullo played for the Cubs in 1945 during their seven-game loss to Detroit. The Cubs haven't been back to the World Series since then.

The former infielder went 0 for 2 in that World Series and played in three games. He said that at the time, the Cubs figured they'd be back in the Series sometime soon.

"Yeah, sure," he said. "We never gave up hope."

Merullo lives in Massachusetts and said this was his first trip to Wrigley since the 1980s.

Merullo was honored as part of the celebration of Wrigley Field's 100th anniversary. He drew a rousing ovation when, standing next to his son, he made the opening toss about 15 minutes before gametime.

"I'll tell you, it's a feeling that I can't describe," he said, smiling. "The excitement that is going through my body right now, it's saying, 'Lennie, do you realize you're right in the center of Wrigley Field, the ballpark that you love?"

Merullo was anything but bitter about the result of the '45 Series.

"They beat us," he said. "Somebody's got to win. You got to have a winner and you've got to have a loser."

Merullo, who also was a scout for the organization, went on the defensive when asked about the Cubs' troubles over the last seven decades.

"I never looked at it like they were struggling," he said. "When I think of the Cubs, I think of Wrigley Field. It's beautiful and it's one of the few ballparks that was always filled with the fans. They used to have to turn the fans away from the park because there was no more room for them. How many ballparks in all of baseball can you say that about?"

"Only Wrigley Field," he said.

Merullo also fondly recalled his teammates on the '45 team.

"They were exceptional because we were always together," he said. "We did things together, we won together, we lost together. We did everything together. We went out and we partied together. We did everything together, and it was a fun time."

Merullo wore a Cubs hat and rings on the ring and pinkie fingers of his left hand. One ring was for being named Cubs scout of the year and the other was for winning the National League pennant.

"When I talk to people, I do it like this," he said, holding his left hand against his face in a manner that flashed both pieces of jewelry.

Merullo, a shortstop, played all seven of his major league seasons with the Cubs, from 1941-47, and had modest career statistics. In 639 games, he batted .240 with a total of six home runs.

"I was behind home plate, looking out at the left-field fence and thinking, 'Why the hell couldn't I hit one out of this ballpark?" he said. "I hit so many balls thinking they'd go out of the ballpark and I'd fall flat on my face between first and second when they didn't."

Story on the local news last night about a guy who e-mailed the Rockies about the sad state of affairs with the team and how they are bad every year, just trying to vent, and the owner of the team responded to the e-mail personally telling the fan: “if you don’t like the product, if you don’t like the experience, don’t come.”

:-s

An owner telling that to the fan(s) that pay all that money to come see a perennially bad baseball team and line his pockets with cash? All the fans here should tell the owner :fu: and boycott buying anything Rockies related for the rest of the year at least.

hm....per what I remember from the halfassed instruction I got from my older brother 25 years or more ago... there was some similarity between those two, I remember him showing me the circle bit - but if you look there is a key difference (this is according to what I've been shown, so may need to be taken w grain of salt...that said the techniques worked, screwball aside, seemed that you needed to throw it harder and snap wrist more and differently for the screwball vs curve) the circle changeup, a larger circle, the screwball, small circle, end of thumb on the ball, emphasis on middle finger and de-emphasis on ring & pinky.

just cuz the pic differs from what I was shown for a circle change up :D

Truth be told, I think the grip is irrelevant as long as your pointer finger is on the inside seam. You're supposed to be thinking 2-seam fastball throughout the motion and add a twist at the end right before the release, much like how you toss the cutter, except the twist is odd... the twist is in a different direction than the cutter, and that's what makes the pitch "screwy". It's supposed to be a reverse curveball in it's breaking motion.

Troy Tulowitzki went on the disabled list earlier this week, but it wasn't for surgery to have one of the t's in his last name removed. At least that would have explained what happened Saturday night at Coors Field.

The Colorado Rockies were giving away jerseys bearing the name of their All-Star shortstop, except it was misspelled, leaving out the second "T."

Let's give the Rockies credit, though. They put out a statement in which they promised to make it up to fans who got the "Tulowizki" jerseys, allowing them to exchange for shirts with his name spelled right and also get a free ticket to another game.

I have bitched for years about the modern trend to have "a closer" and always use that person no matter what. Ridiculous. So good for you, Bochy, for actually playing the game.

I am not a Giants fan, but Bochy has been great all post season. I would argue Bumgarner might have ripped the best pitcher in baseball title away from Kershaw

MIAMI (AP) — The Marlins persuaded Giancarlo Stanton to say yes. He couldn't afford to say no.

Stanton agreed to terms Monday on a $325 million, 13-year contract, team owner Jeffrey Loria said. It's the most lucrative deal for an American athlete and averages $25 million per season.

"It's a landmark moment for the franchise and Giancarlo," Loria said.

The deal includes a no-trade clause, and Stanton can opt out after six years, Loria said. A news conference was planned Wednesday.

The Marlins right fielder and centerpiece wasn't due to become eligible for free agency until after the 2016 season, and signing him to a long-term deal was considered a long shot. The Marlins haven't reached the playoffs since 2003, and he was distrustful of the franchise's direction.

Miami's 2014 payroll of $52.3 million was the lowest in the majors. The last time they spent big was before the 2012 season, the first in their new ballpark. Then came a disastrous season and salary purge, intensifying fan animosity toward Loria.

That sell-off and subsequent roster rebuilding set the stage for the Stanton deal, Loria said.

"Unfortunately people didn't understand that two years ago, we had no choice," the owner said. "I had to get to today."

Loria's frugal ways in the past angered the players' union and made the franchise the butt of jokes. Given such thriftiness, the generosity toward Stanton becomes even more stunning.

His contract tops the $292 million, 10-year deal Miguel Cabrera agreed to with the Detroit Tigers in March. Alex Rodriguez signed the largest previous deal, a $275 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees before the 2008 season.

Stanton, who turned 25 on Nov. 8, is perhaps the game's most feared slugger. He has 154 career homers, including 37 this year, despite playing home games in spacious Marlins Park.

The two-time All-Star right fielder recently won the NL Hank Aaron Award and was voted the NL's outstanding player in balloting by his fellow major leaguers. He won a Silver Slugger Award and finished second to Clayton Kershaw in NL MVP voting.

"Giancarlo Stanton has come of age, and he's going to be here a long time," Loria said. "It's wonderful to have a young man this caliber, integrity and ability, and I'm very happy."

Loria said he doesn't expect Stanton to opt out when he's 31, and sees a positive side to the no-trade clause.

"There will be no distraction about, 'Will he be traded?'" Loria said.

Stanton's 2014 season ended Sept. 11 when he was hit in the face by a pitch and suffered fractures in his face and other injuries. Despite missing the final 17 games, he led the NL in homers and slugging for the Marlins, who went 77-85 but ended a three-year streak of last-place finishes in the NL East.

The Marlins have said they're not concerned the injuries will have lingering effects. They made locking up Stanton their top offseason priority and overcame his skepticism about their efforts to fielding a winning team.

The Marlins believe they're poised to contend next year with a young roster than includes right-handers Jose Fernandez and Henderson Alvarez, Gold Glove left fielder Christian Yelich, center fielder Marcell Ozuna and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria.

That's ridiculous. They're gonna be eating that contract in 2 years.

Did y'all see that Atlanta traded Jason Heyward to the Cardinals?

NEW YORK (AP) — Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz are among 17 newcomers on baseball's 2015 Hall of Fame ballot.

Craig Biggio, who fell two votes short of the 75 percent needed in the 2014 balloting, tops 17 holdovers on the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot announced Monday. That group includes Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Mike Piazza, Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines.

Johnson went 303-166, won five Cy Young Awards. The Big Unit struck out 4,875, second only to Nolan Ryan's 5,714.

Martinez, a two-time Cy Young winner, was 219-100, struck out 3,154 and led the major leagues in ERA five times.

Smoltz is vying to join former Atlanta teammates Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, who were inducted this year along with Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas. Smoltz had a 213-155 record and 154 seasons, the only pitcher with 200 wins and 150 saves. He was 15-4 in the postseason.

Carlos Delgado, Nomar Garciaparra, Gary Sheffield and players' association head Tony Clark also are among the first-time eligibles.

Don Mattingly will appear on the ballot for the 15th and final time after receiving 8 percent last year. The Hall's board voted in July to cut a player's eligibility from 15 years to 10 but grandfathered players in the 11-15 group, which also includes Alan Trammell (14th year) and Lee Smith (13th).

Players who have admitted steroids use or been tainted with accusations of use have fallen short.

McGwire, entering his next-to-last year of eligibility, received 11 percent last year, down from a peak of 25.6 in 2008.

Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, dropped from 38 percent to 35 in his second ballot appearance. Bonds, a seven-time MVP and baseball's career home runs leader, fell from 36 percent to 35. Sosa, who hit 609 homers, dropped from 13 percent to 7 and is close to falling below the 5 percent threshold for remaining on the ballot.

Voters are the approximately 600 writers who have been members of the BBWAA for 10 consecutive years at any point. Ballots must be postmarked by Dec. 27. Results will be announced Jan. 6.

Players elected, along with choices announced Dec. 8 by the golden era committee (1947-72), will be inducted July 26 at Cooperstown.

Sources say the Phillies have traded SS Jimmy Rollins to the LA Dodgers for 2 minor league pitchers. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Yes, the Sox have done well also.

Joe Madden is extremely huge for the Cubs after 3 no-name losers at the helm. Miguel Montero and Jason Hammel are great acquisitions, and the young players are seriously looking perfectly positioned.

They are extremely young.. youngest team? But I really think it's coming together. Best prospect in years anyway...

Joe Maddon's a pretty good manager. I had Montero in my fantasy lineup before. He's a decent catcher. He can be a bit inconsistent at the plate but he had good numbers last year. I wouldn't call Hammel great, he's a good pitcher, but he's not Kershaw. But then again, who is? Not a bad addition to your rotation. We'll see how it works out for you guys.
