I'm excited about both my favorite teams this year. Both the Red Sox and the Rockies made some good moves in the offseason. Good acquisitions by the Red Sox and as long as they stay healthy, I think they are the class of the AL. And the Rockies did good by signing CarGo and Tulo to long term deals. Now if only the Rockies could have a decent start to the season instead of stumbling out of the gate like they always do :wha:

Ramirez was a huge talent, colossal waste
By Jeff Passan - Yahoo! Sports

http://i.imgur.com/03tNt.jpg

The end of Manny Ramirez’s career could not have been more perfect. In the middle of a Yankees-Red Sox game, with the jury for Barry Bonds’ steroid-cum-perjury trial deliberating its verdict, Major League Baseball distributed an email that said Manny had retired after running afoul of its performance-enhancing drug program. In a system where only a fool fails a test, Manny had flunked for the second time.

The ultimate flake flaked out in the ultimate fashion.

And so we bid adieu to Manuel Aristides Ramirez Onelcida, superlative talent and undeniable waste, who caps what should’ve been a marvelous career with another taint.

Manny’s legacy could have been as the most pure and accomplished right-handed hitter since Joe DiMaggio. Manny’s legacy is trying to get pregnant as a 38-year-old male.

Oh, there had been incidents before his PED bust two years ago. Early on in his career, Manny being Manny was cute. He got pulled over once in Cleveland because the tint on his windows was too dark. He didn’t have his driver’s license and tried to talk his way out of a citation. It didn’t work. So Manny did what anybody else would do: immediately made an illegal U-turn and got another ticket.

The signs of Ramirez unraveling started to show late in his tenure in Boston, when he shoved the Red Sox’s Social Security-aged traveling secretary, couldn’t keep straight which knee of his was injured and took evermore leisurely strolls to first base. When he fully nuked himself with the Red Sox in 2007, the sheen had come off Manny. The fun-loving nincompoop morphed into a calculating saboteur.

Still, he could hit. Lord, could Manny Ramirez hit. The count didn’t matter. Pitch, either. High, low, inside, outside, fast, slow, straight, bent – Manny could crush it. He finished every swing with his left-arm extended high in the air, a pose that allowed him to appreciate the beauty of how he could launch a pitch. Steroids do not gift mortals a swing like Manny’s; God does.

Anybody with an eye for aesthetics could appreciate Manny’s ability to punish a ball. A locked-in Ramirez spread out hits on the grass better than a sprinkler. His hitting jags – particularly the one that carried Boston to its second World Series title with Manny hitting cleanup – cemented his legend in Boston. Larry Bird once told the Boston Globe that when Ramirez was at the plate, “I’m glued to the television. I’m stopping whatever I’m doing and I’m watching him hit the baseball.” He was a savant, from his days as a teenager left alone by the gangs in Washington Heights because of his talent to his last swings as an ostensibly clean ballplayer two years ago.

The hilarity of Ramirez’s first suspension – he was caught with a prescription for a women’s fertility drug often used to mask PEDs – seemed to protect him from answering for it. Manny never talked about it. Others laughed it off. When the New York Times reported that Ramirez tested positive in 2003 as well, it begged the question of just how long Ramirez had been imbibing. But, hey. He was Manny. Bulletproof as long as he hit.

Then he stopped hitting. The Los Angeles Dodgers, who lavished $45 million on him the year after they acquired him from Boston, watched him regress and hit the disabled list. The Chicago White Sox dealt for him and saw a swing in desperate need of performance enhancement. They let him depart this offseason without pause.

When the Tampa Bay Rays signed Manny to a one-year, $2 million deal in late January, they hoped he had bottled up some of his magic and could locate it once more. Turned out he had. Manny used some sort of drug this offseason. He was tested upon arrival to Rays camp. The test came back positive. Rather than face a 100-game suspension, he slinked away.

He left with a weak pop-up to right field off Kevin Jepsen as a pinch hitter. With an .059 batting average, an .059 on-base percentage and an .059 slugging percentage. With the Rays reeling from an 0-6 start. With the feeling that he was like every other aging athlete who can’t come to grips with his own body, his own mortality, the loss of something that forever came naturally to him, so he does everything he can to stop it until hubris does it for him. Athletes age faster than the rest of us; they also fight it harder – and dumber.

Even with baseball strengthening its drug policy, the incentive to take PEDs remains strong enough that the risk – in Manny’s case, ending his career – felt worth it. That is sad. It is also indicative of his priorities. Baseball excellence mattered to him enough that he’d further soil his reputation in pursuit of it.

It is easy to damn him for his bad decisions. He made them with the frequency of someone one-tenth his age. It is easy, too, to savor his 555 home runs, no matter how many contaminated by drugs, because, like Bonds, his talent was pure, if not his results.

And now Manny’s gone – from the game today and almost certainly from Hall of Fame consideration. As much as the inclination might be to wish good riddance to Ramirez, baseball will miss him.

There are only so many preternatural talents like Ramirez; and even fewer personalities to match his. The dreadlocks and imitators in Mannywood, the outfield bungles, the bathroom breaks inside the Green Monster – all are part of the Manny Ramirez tableau, a bright, bold, complicated one with the brightest of flames and dullest of fizzles.

Barry Bonds found guilty of obstruction
ESPN.com news services

SAN FRANCISCO -- The jury in the Barry Bonds case convicted the seven-time MVP guilty of obstruction of justice, but the defense and prosecution agreed to a mistrial on the other three remaining counts.

The guilty verdict on obstruction of justice means the jury believed Bonds hindered a grand jury's 2003 sports doping investigation by lying.

The judge, after speaking to the jury foreman, said she believes the mistrial is the proper decision given that the jury believes it has reached a crossroads.

The eight women and four men returned the verdict after four days of deliberations. The jury worked behind closed doors since rehearing some testimony early Monday.

Bonds was charged with three counts of lying to a grand jury and one count of obstruction.

Prosecutors allege that Bonds lied when he denied knowingly taking steroids and human growth hormone. A third count of making a false statement charges that Bonds lied when he said no one other than his doctor ever injected him with anything.

Bonds' case is the culmination of a federal investigation that began in 2002 into the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, which distributed performance-enhancing drugs to athletes.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

They are. And they have a couple of pretty decent pitchers, too. But the American East Division looks to be the weakest in the league thus far. The only team in that division above .500 are the Yankees. Toronto's still below .500. With the lineup Boston has, they should be beating Toronto. So it's no real surprise that they are. Now if Boston wakes up completely and starts beating teams above .500 in other divisions, making up lost ground...

When you go 1 for 15 in 3 games, with two 0 fors per game in my lineup, and you're piling up the K's, then it's time for me to start looking elsewhere.

At the very least, hit the damn ball and get on base twice in a series.

I hear ya, I am waiting to claim another one of your cast-offs (Ortiz) and dump Pena for the same reason.

See, Ortis is another one. When he's on, he's great, but it's too few and far between when you got guys like Izturis and Sizemore who average at least a hit in every game. If you can get a hit at least once in every game, then you have the potential to drive in a RBI, or get your followup batter to drive you in for a run. Hell, I don't mind if the batter walks even. If they're on base, it's at least a fighting chance to come home. What I hate is when they go 0 for 5 for 2-3 games, and then get a lonely little single, then hit the skids again. That just doesn't cut it when you got guys like Braun in the league that murders pitchers left and right, and he's not even the exception.

Killebrew ends fight vs cancer, looks to hospice
By DAVE CAMPBELL, AP Sports Writer

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—Harmon Killebrew announced Friday that he no longer plans to fight his esophageal cancer and has settled in for the final days of his life, saddening friends and fans of the 74-year-old Hall of Fame slugger.

In a statement released jointly by the Minnesota Twins and the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Killebrew said “it is with profound sadness” that he will no longer receive treatment for the “awful disease.”

He said the cancer has been deemed incurable by his doctors and he will enter hospice care.

“With the continued love and support of my wife, Nita, I have exhausted all options,” Killebrew said. He added: “I have spent the past decade of my life promoting hospice care and educating people on its benefits. I am very comfortable taking this next step and experiencing the compassionate care that hospice provides.”

Killebrew, who’s 11th on baseball’s all-time home run list with 573, thanked his well-wishers for their support.

“I look forward to spending my final days in comfort and peace with Nita by my side,” he said.

Relief pitcher Joe Nathan didn’t know Killebrew until he joined in the team in 2004, but it didn’t take long to feel like he was a lifelong friend.

“Hopefully we can honor what he’s done in the game and outside of the game, and I hope he can continue to fight a little longer and especially be comfortable right now and be at peace,” Nathan said.

Killebrew lives in the Phoenix area and was receiving treatment at a branch of the Mayo Clinic nearby after his diagnosis in December. He expressed optimism at the time, saying he expected to make a full recovery while acknowledging he was in “perhaps the most difficult battle” of his life.

Killebrew was able to travel to Fort Myers, Fla., in March for his annual stint as a guest instructor at spring training with the Twins. He was in good spirits and appeared healthy, only thinner, quipping that manager Ron Gardenhire gave him the OK to show up late. He said he relished the opportunity to immerse himself in baseball and divert his focus from the treatment and the disease.

But his plan to throw out the first pitch at the team’s home opener in April was scrapped. He said then in a statement that such a trip would disrupt his treatment schedule, though he remained hopeful for a recovery.

Twins spokesman Kevin Smith said there was no prognosis given by Killebrew’s doctors for how much longer he might live. Instead of enduring chemotherapy, he’ll now be kept as comfortable as possible to deal with pain. Smith is one of a handful of Twins officials who have been in contact with the Killebrew and his family over the last few months. Former Twins teammate Tony Oliva said he planned to visit Killebrew in Arizona this weekend, too.

Killebrew made 11 All-Star appearances during a 22-year career spent mostly with the Washington Senators and the Twins when they moved to Minnesota in 1961. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984 and was fifth on the career home run list when he retired in 1975 after one season with the Kansas City Royals.

Killebrew’s eight seasons with 40 or more homers is tied for second in league history to Babe Ruth. He won the American League MVP award in 1969, when the Twins won their division and lost to the Baltimore Orioles in the AL championship series.

The 49 homers, 140 RBIs and 145 walks he compiled that season remain Twins records.

In the plaza outside Target Field, there is a giant bronze glove where fans pose for pictures. It is the same distance from home plate, 520 feet, as that longest home run Killebrew ever hit. His No. 3 jersey is retired, and a replica will be in Minnesota’s dugout for the rest of the season. There’s a statue in his likeness outside the ballpark, too, and two roses were left near the base of the statue on Friday. Right fielder Michael Cuddyer said the players want to wear the 1961 throwback jerseys for every home game the rest of the season in Killebrew’s honor.

Killebrew has maintained a regular presence around the Twins over the years. He made an effort to get to know almost all the current players, striking particularly close friendships with Cuddyer, Justin Morneau and Jim Thome among others.

“I never watched him play. The only way I do know him is as a mentor, as a genuine person,” Cuddyer said. “He was a father figure to pretty much everybody he met. That says it all.”

Gardenhire said one of his favorite memories was seeing Killebrew walk in his office in full uniform in spring training a few years ago after the manager had invited him to join the team.

“He was excited and ready to go,” Gardenhire said. “He asked me, ‘What do you want? What do you need me to do?’ I said, ‘Just be you,’ and that’s what he did.”

His nickname, “The Killer,” defied his humble, gentle demeanor, but he sure could crush a baseball with that big bat of his.

“I didn’t have evil intentions,” Killebrew once said, “but I guess I did have power.”

His home run totals turned out to be that much more impressive, given the smaller parks, watered-down pitching staffs and juiced balls and players that came in the decades after he retired.

Though Killebrew has been passed in recent years by Alex Rodriguez and Thome on the homer list to fall out of the top 10, he ought to be in 11th place for some time, particularly as dominant young pitchers have taken control of this post-steroid era in baseball. With Manny Ramirez’s sudden retirement last month, the next closest active players are Vladimir Guerrero and Chipper Jones with 440.

Albert Pujols, with 415 homers at age 31, might be the next threat to reach Killebrew’s mark.

Harmon Killebrew dies at 74
ESPN.com news services

MINNEAPOLIS -- Harmon Killebrew, the Minnesota Twins slugger known for his tape-measure home runs, has died at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., after battling esophageal cancer. He was 74.

The team said Killebrew died peacefully Tuesday morning with his wife, Nita, and their family at his side.

He had announced in December that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Last week, Killebrew announced that doctors had deemed his cancer incurable and he would no longer fight the "awful disease."

Power, Kindness Forever Remembered

Will Harmon Killebrew gave Minnesotans a ballplayer -- and a person -- that they were proud of during a Hall of Fame career, writes Jim Caple.

Killebrew hit 573 home runs during his 22-year career, 11th-most in major league history. His eight seasons with 40 or more homers still is tied for second in league history to Babe Ruth.

"No individual has ever meant more to the Minnesota Twins organization and millions of fans across Twins territory than Harmon Killebrew," Twins president Dave St. Peter said. He said Killebrew's legacy "will be the class, dignity and humility he demonstrated each and every day as a Hall of Fame-quality husband, father, friend, teammate and man. The Twins extend heartfelt sympathies and prayers to the Killebrew family at this difficult time."

Former teammate Tony Oliva said Tuesday the Twins flew him out to Arizona on Saturday so he could spend time with Killebrew.

"It's very hard, we knew each other about 50 years," Oliva told ESPN on Tuesday after learning of Killebrew's death. "I saw him Saturday and he looked very good, even though he was very sick. He was smiling and making jokes."

Killebrew broke in with the Washington Senators in 1954 as an 18-year-old. He spent most of his first five seasons in the minors, then hit 42 homers in his first full season in 1959.

The Senators moved to Minnesota in 1961, and Killebrew hit 190 homers in his first four seasons there, including 49 in 1964.

The 11-time All-Star was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1969 after hitting 49 home runs with 140 RBIs and 145 walks, all team records that stand to this day.

"I found out early in life that I could hit a baseball farther than most players and that's what I tried to do," Killebrew said.

Behind their soft-spoken slugger nicknamed "The Killer," the Twins reached the World Series for the first time in 1965 and back-to-back AL Championship Series in 1969 and 1970.

Former Twins owner Calvin Griffith used to call Killebrew the backbone of the franchise. "He kept us in business," Griffith said.

The man whose silhouette inspired Major League Baseball's official logo was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984, the first Twin to be enshrined. Killebrew's No. 3 jersey was retired in 1975. Killebrew's easygoing demeanor contrasted starkly with his nickname and standing as one of baseball's most feared hitters.

"I didn't have evil intentions," Killebrew said on his website. "But I guess I did have power."

Harmon Clayton Killebrew was born June 29, 1936, in the Idaho farm town of Payette. He was an all-state quarterback in high school, but it was his power with a baseball bat in his hands that got Killebrew noticed by Washington Senators scout Ossie Bluege.

On Killebrew's website, Bluege recounts the story of how he signed the 17-year-old to a $30,000 contract in 1953.

"I waited for the rain to stop in Payette, Idaho and then he hit one a mile over the left field fence," Bluege said. "I stepped it off the next morning and measured it at 435 feet. That convinced me."

Killebrew didn't just hit balls over the fence, he turned at-bats into longest-drive contests. He never worried much about his short game, preferring instead to swing for the fences, and wound up with a career .256 average.

"I didn't think much about batting average when I was playing," Killebrew said.

On June 3, 1967, Killebrew belted the longest home run in Met Stadium history, a shot that reached the second deck of the bleachers in the old park, some 500 feet from home plate.

"He hit line drives that put the opposition in jeopardy," Bluege once said. "And I don't mean the infielders. I mean the outfielders."

Killebrew finished his career with one season in Kansas City in 1975.

Jane Forbes Clark, chairwoman of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, said Killebrew personified Hall of Fame excellence and was simply one of the greatest hitters of all time.

"Since joining the Hall of Fame family in 1984, Harmon was a beacon of light among his fellow Hall of Famers, always smiling, always enjoying every moment that life delivered to his doorstep," she said. "We have so many fond memories of this wonderful baseball hero, and we will miss him enormously."

Killebrew and Nita had nine children.

In retirement, he became a successful businessman in insurance, financial planning and car sales. He also traveled the country with baseball memorabilia shows and returned to the Twin Cities regularly, delighting in conversations with fans and reunions with teammates.

"I never thought anything would compare to being elected into the Hall of Fame, but being able to interact with fans once my playing days were over has been just as gratifying," Killebrew said.

Actually no, he scored 3 times as many runs as the whole Phillies team did. Scoring = Runs, not RBIs.

And he still sucks.
