Rep. Barney Frank, the first openly gay serving member of Congress and a powerful Democrat whose name is attached to the sweeping Wall Street reform bill, will announce today he doesn’t plan to seek reelection.

Frank became the first openly gay member of Congress six years after he first took office, coming out in 1987 and breaking an important barrier in American politics.

He survived scandal to become one of the most powerful Democrats on Capitol Hill during 30 years in office. The Massachusetts congressman chaired the House Financial Services Committee when Democrats were in the majority from early 2007 until early 2011, becoming the main House Democrat overseeing the financial industry during one of the most turbulent economic eras of U.S. history.

Frank was instrumental in ushering the Wall Street bailout through Congress in 2008. And he, along with Chris Dodd, have their names attached to a sweeping Wall Street reform bill passed through Congress and signed by President Obama in 2010.

Dodd resigned in 2010 rather than face a tough reelection fight.

The Wall Street reform bill – known as “Dodd-Frank” – placed tough new rules on the financial sector as a way to avoid future mortgage crises. It also enacted a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to protect Americans from large corporations. The law has been pilloried by Republicans as Washington overreach.

Frank is noted on Capitol Hill for his unkempt appearance, often untucked shirttails and pugnacious speaking style. He often dismisses reporters’ questions with disdain, has a quick wit, and is known to verbally joust with colleagues.

He has not been without controversy. Frank admitted to paying a male prostitute who was living in his Capitol Hill apartment in the 1980s and servicing other clients there.

Frank survived attempts to expel him from the House and stayed on to become one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington. He will discuss his decision not to run in Boston at a 1 p.m. news conference.

Democrats do not expect to have a problem winning the district in Frank’s absence. Barack Obama and Sen. John Kerry both garnered more than 60 percent of the vote there in 2008.

It's a great day whenever a life long politician (of either party) leaves office. Out with the old, stuck in their ways, never willing to compromise politicians and in with the new.

Muddy, as a Democrat, why don't you enlighten us all with the achievements of Bawney Fwanks political career? We'll make fun of him and you tell us why he kept getting reelected.

Im no Democrat... Show me a Republican who deserves my vote, and I'll vote for him.. Until then the Democraps have the least damaging bull in the China shop.. My *ugggh* comment wasn't because I was offended at your use of the word "Bawney"... It was because of the predictable lingo you used..

Read the bill in it's entirety then come back and we can discuss it. It's a huge joke and does NOTHING to prevent future financial meltdowns like we had in 2008.

Judging by yours and PCS's reaction, the bill is a good idea in name only

Drill for oil where things are sensitive and remove all regulation, remove all financial regulation, kill everyone that doesn't pay their fair share of taxes. Remove all regulation.. Oh and remove all regulation.

We promise to take money away from everyone who is successful and give it to those that produce nothing. After all it's only fair for everyone to have something regardless if they deserve it or not. We promise to over regulate businesses so badly that we force them to cut jobs and then we place the blame squarely on the business. After all, all businesses (except the federal government) are corrupt.

I just wrote an honest election tagline for the ENTIRE Democrat party.

It is a good thing, implemented correctly. Republicans HATE IT because it tightens regulations on the billionaires they represent.

You forgot the big one right now: make sure the government doesn't have enough money coming in so that it HAS to cut social programs...BUT, make sure that billionaires pay as little as possible and that the military suffers no cuts.

Don't get too giddy Joey, I think social programs need tighter guidlines.. Like drug tests for welfare and disability recipients.

I'm all for helping someone that truly needs it, but I've seen first hand people milking this unemployment extension thing out to the max and for every drop they can get... People not working for 2 straight years and hitting the golf range every week... Because they have enough of an income form the unemployment to supplement their wifes income that they just don't bother putting ANY effort into locating gainful employment..

We agree on something. Hell must be freezing over right about now

I'm all for helping someone who is down and out but there have to be limits (in addition to drug tests) like 6 months of assistance every 5 years. It encourages people to go out and get jobs while at the same time not shunning them for failure. Right now we have people at 99 weeks and counting of assistance. That's asinine and counter productive.

We agree on lots of things.. I just don't let you know it because (honestly) I sometime get the vibe off of you that you feel Democrat =bad and Republican = good... And I just don't think that's the case..

I think both sides have a certain validity to them, but neither one can admit it.

I don't think either side is right on everything. As I've said before I'm more of a Libertarian if people require a label. I'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

Fiscally, I believe a smaller government is more agile and responds better to the people is serves. It also requires less tax dollars to run.

Socially, if gays want to get married or people want to do drugs that's no skin off my back. To each is own.

Yes that happens and it is a shame, but you can't abandon the whole system for a few bad apples. Extended unemployment is good when a job can not be found...but, if in a household with multiple workers, the spouses income should be considered BEFORE extensions are granted. That is a flaw in the system, not a flawed system.

And, I have no problems with tightening the social programs, and have some really specific suggestions for the whole welfare mother thing that might blow your mind (and probably anger a few of the neocons as it has a few minor elements of GASP socialism built into it).

"this bill gets rid of bailouts"

=

"this bill declares that if we determine your company to be large enough to constitute a "systemic risk," we may require your business to be bailed out as determined by our arbitrary standards, whether you feel you need it or not."

Dodd-Frank was a big piece of shit legislation. The only worse one I can think of offhand would be Obamacare. Same shit different ink.

"Something, anything has to be done"

*writes pile of shit that plugs only the hole that just leaked and absolutely nothing else, in fact leaving the structure writ large more vulnerable*

"great, let's pass it!"

Don't forget the MALE PROSTITUTION RING he ran out of his apartment for 2 years in the late 80's. Many of the people here were not old enough to know/care about his truly dubious past. All they know is he has his named attached to a financial bill they THINK is worth more than the paper it's printed on. People are so gullible.

This dude has been a lying bag of shit for a long time and I'm glad to see him go.
