FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — The parent companies of American Airlines and its regional affiliate American Eagle are filing for Ch. 11 bankruptcy protection.

AMR Corp. and AMR Eagle Holding Corp. said Tuesday that they filed voluntary petitions to reorganize, saying it's in the best interest of the companies and its shareholders.

American says it sought protection to reduce its costs and debt to remain competitive in the airline industry.

American was the only major U.S. airline that didn't file for bankruptcy protection after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

American says labor-contract rules force it to spend at least $600 million more than other airlines.

An MD-80 with expensive tickets, bad service, bad food, baggage fees and ugly flight attendants.

I thought they were about the last company in the airline business to not have done this?

In fairness to American, the problem is precisely that once upon a time, all the other airlines went broke. They shit canned their old planes, old union contracts, and put themselves together with a much cheaper breakeven

In that sense, AMR is penalized because they didnt suck as badly as the Continentals and Uniteds (which never seems to be anything but bankrupt) of the world

JMO, but the folks who complain about the GM and Chrysler bankruptcies have it all wrong -- no one wanted GM or Chrysler's business. But somehow, United goes bankrupt -- and keeps all their gates! What should have happened is that UAL goes bankrupt, and O'Hare goes up for grabs . .. those are valuable, and folks would have bought them.
