HFT Firm CEO Seeks Taxpayer Dollars To Save His Hockey Team

The Florida Panthers finished this season with the 2nd lowest points total in the NHL and drew the 2nd lowest average attendance of 14,200 fans per home game. The team is losing $25 million annually. All of this is the exact opposite situation of the team's owner - Vincent Viola of HFT firm Virtu Financial infamy. As Bloomberg reports, Viola, whose high-frequency trading firm plans to raise millions in an initial public offering next month, is seeking tax dollars to help cover the bills for the hockey team he bought six months ago. Viola asked lawmakers in South Florida’s Broward County to use $64 million in taxpayer funds for arena bond payments owed by the team. In addition to taking over bond payments, which would be made over the next 14 years, the team wants concessions that would cost county taxpayers another $14 million in the same period.

As Bloomberg reports, officials in Broward, which encompasses Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic Coast, disagree on how to proceed, with some saying that if they don’t pick up the tab, the team may move and leave taxpayers with $225 million in debt and an empty arena.

---------------------------------------

should be illegal for a professional sports team to extort taxpayer money from localities to pay for their fkn stadiums.

for some reason, feet leaving the ground made me think of this time when we were kids playing football, we kicked off and the kid that received in ran down the sideline,

and the biggest guy on our team took a perfect trajectory for where he'd be, but instead of a tackle he took his full speed run, jumped into the air and made himself into a cannonball,

and hit the kid so hard his shoes fell off. that kid's mom yelled at us and he never played football again.

Well, you need cable/satellite TV to get those mythical channels. Since you don't want cable, in that case, you're screwed.

You'll have to find a pirated stream online somewhere to watch the games. Sorry.

If it's any consolation, the Stanley Cup Finals might be shown on straight network NBC. But you're gonna have to wait a couple of weeks to get to them, we're only in the first round.

So, do you think the back-to-back games in the Flyers/Rangers series helps Philly or NY? :-k

DemonGeminiX
04-30-2014, 07:57 PM
It depends. Can Lundqvist bounce back and let a shitty performance go that quick? Do the Flyers have his number? Does scoring 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of the third period give something the Rangers can build off of? Are the Flyers better as a road team and can they bring the same intensity to New York in game 7 as they did at home in game 6? Will the Rangers be pissed off by losing so bad, enough so that they come in as a team possessed with the will to destroy the Flyers? Will the Flyers rise up to that level?

To be honest, I really haven't paid attention this season so I don't know how the Flyers are gonna react in a do or die situation away from home. I can tell you that the Flyers made some really shitty plays in the defensive zone and I thought the Rangers should have made them pay for it last night. Mason was awesome in that respect.

Otherwise, I have no idea.

Fair enough DGX! This is off-topic and I hate to generalize but I really do think Americans share a love for the Underdog at the genetic level. Not a bad thing, it's just an observation. Is that an unfair one?

Anyways. I'm pulling for Pitt over NYR (Sid needs another Cup) and Habs over Bruins in the East. Hawks over Wild and Ducks over LA in the West (Teemu needs one last Cup).

I don't really think about that, but I think that is a fair assessment. If it's not my home team, not one of my home team's rivals, and it's not a yearly dominating team with star power galore, then I might root for them. I like to see underdogs do well; it makes for a more exciting playoffs. But I guess that's just me wanting to watch good games since I'm investing my time into watching them.

I can't root for Pitt or NY. I'm not going to root for Boston since they've won the Cup recently, so I'm looking for Montreal to come out of the East. I can't root for the Blackhawks, nor the Ducks. Honestly, I think I'd like to see the Wild come out of the West. Probably not gonna happen, but what the hell? They've got one of those scrappy fight until their dead type of teams. They've been really fun to watch.

See I don't get that. Lots of teams miss the playoffs, and half of the ones that get through lose in the first round. People are happy about that. Then you've got a team like Pittsburgh, wins the Cup, becomes a perennial contender, and they lose in the second round and dammit heads are gonna roll! Given that the rest of the league is watching from their couches, the team, the front office, and their fans should be happy they made it as far as they did.

I don't care who's on the team, you can't win all the time.

I'd agree if this was the first let-down since winning or almost winning a cup, but I don't think it's a knee-jerk reaction this year. Bylsma's been the coach with a pretty similar core for five seasons since they won their last cup which is a lifetime for a coach. In the last 5 years they've finished first or second in their division each year, but only won 4 rounds of playoffs total. That's pretty miserable when you have two franchise players in Crosby & Malkin, and some incredible supporting pieces. Simply not good enough for a team like this that doesn't have another 5-years together.

This year especially the Pens showed no real killer instinct in the playoffs... the Blue Jackets gave them a scare, they should have finished off the Rangers ages ago.

Or settle for a perennial underachiever in the playoffs because their star players aren't coached to limit ice time and they have no discernible system? For one little rant :

Lucic should grow the fuck up. I used to love his style of blue collar hockey, but now I think he's a big baby. Regardless of whether Weise should have said anything or broke a code, we can all read lips and it would have come out anyways. Telling two guys he's going to fucking kill them in the handshake line, and ignoring other players, barely sticking on the ice to salute the fans, then going on a rant in the post-game interview? Even a guy like Thorton who is easy to hate, shook hands like a man. You can't question Milan's desire to win and the Habs-Bruins rivalry runs deep - but I have no respect for his actions in that moment.

The handshake line is special to hockey. This is what the good old hockey players do :

Actually, it looks like they're a bit even. The variance is small and they trade off seasons here and there. We'll have to see Carter's stats when the playoffs are over for the Kings to get this year's comparisons. But still, the word is that Voracek is lazy. I'm not sure if there's any truth to that, or if it's any worse than the word about Carter when he was with Philly (Richards and Carter supposedly were drunks).

Thankfully, according to Michel Therrien, Price is not injured...but he pulled him off because the players in front of him were playing like shit and wanted to
wake the team up and protect Price. 7-2, they probably were already thinking about the Stanley Cup, that's a big wake up call.

Definitely good news, and definitely hope it is a wake up call.

Reminds me of the Canucks in January the season after they lost in the Cup Final to Boston. They played Boston in this hugely hyped crazy regular season game. It was a nasty hard-fought game that the Nucks did win but it seemed as if they treated it like this great big redemption victory instead of just a game. They played like absolute shit for the remainder of the season and were killed in 5 games to the Kings in the playoffs... it was complete joke. So Montreal needs to look ahead very quick if that's what the problem is.

Losing 7-2 is probably the best wake up call you can get, playing that bad (good 2nd period, till the last 2 minutes and the 3rd)
its better that way than losing 2-1 and have them say "well it was close"

This is what the good old hockey players do :
http://i.imgur.com/L6uwkza.jpg

He SHOULD get a fine or a suspension, I'd say the same if it was Emelin or any Habs players that did that crap, not because he's a Bruins. He's saying he's going to kill Weise during the handshake, which is the COMPLETE opposite of what the handshake is meant to be for. (Patrice Bergeron said to Brière, "Go get that cup", class act)...know what is the most ironic with it?...Lucic recently released a book against bullying...
And about the Rangers, I'll wait till tonight's game is done before making predictions

:wah:

If the players can't take it, I hear there's some openings at the Bolshoi

I disagree. Lucic's behavior was piss-poor sportsmanship. The series is over. Man up and congratulate the winner. The players in the NHL aren't just players. They're emissaries for the sport. If they can't act like adults and put forth a good example for everyone else to follow when all is said and done, then they shouldn't be on the ice. There are kids watching this game. Lucic's antics sends the wrong message. Grow up and show them how a real man is supposed to act... with class.

The shirt is awesome....and if a Habs player (or Rangers or Flyers or anyone) had said it, I couldn't care less. It was said on the ice and it belongs there...unless you are a little bitch and need to go whine to someone about it.

If you guys think that Lucic is the first and only guy to say something in the handshake line, then you guys are naive as hell.

I've said all I am going to say on this, I'm out.

I'm sure you're right, but that doesn't change the fact that it's wrong. You can call us naive all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that that behavior does not belong in a professional game's post series handshake. It's childish and unprofessional. These guys are supposed to be the best of the best. They should act like it.
