This year especially may be one of the best playoffs I can remember, not sure if anyone else feels the same way?

No hockey again tonight is depressing :( It almost seems like there should be a way to keep the momentum up during the final round though... even in the Conference Finals you basically have a game each night, so it's anti-climactic in the final round which shouldn't be the case!

Man, it sucks when poor officiating changes the direction, momentum, and outcome of a game. Or should I ask how the NHL hires their refs, do the teams hire them directly?

2 easy goalie interference calls - one against the rangers got called, one against the kings...what, what interference? I didnt see shit?

Or the OT bullshit that setup the game winner....we fuggin watch the kings guy toss the puck out of the rink...ref? :hand: no that clearly hit the glass. ok, whatever, motherfucker.

Without the momentum change of the king's 3rd goal, the 4th never would have happened, and since the refs decided to give the kings one more favor and keep the rangers off a(nother) power play in OT...

That game was bullshit, the rangers were well on top of the entire game. Fuggin refs making me pick a team I want to win and shit.

Every league pulls this bullshit now, drags out the finals as long as humanly possible. It's absolutely fucking stupid. It wasn't like this 20 years ago and that was back when there were no private jets for the teams and everyone had to fly commercial. And all the series were in the 2-2-1-1-1 format.

I think it was a given that LA was going to win this. But its sad and pathetic seeing the refs in LA try to assist them in any way possible. That bullshit hooking call where the Rangers scored shorthanded...yeah fluke backfire...follow that up with what's his name dragging his leg and ACTING! it out! and drawing a penalty, where the kings guy should have been the one with the penalty there for obstruction - even the commentators called the shit out of that one....and unfortunately that bullshit call led to a tied game. That other call where the main ref overruled the line judges where the puck went into the king's bench right before the end of regulation....both line judges with the better view on it said it went in the kings zone and should have been a faceoff there instead of bringing it outside the zone, with the game winding down...

So yyyyyeah....while the kings would have won anyway....we can give a nice big ASSIST to the fuckin LA refs  I hate nothing more in the sports world when games are ruined by poor or biased officiating. It really pisses me off. Wonder how much the center judge's friends had bet on the LA win last night  I hate it when I have to yell at the tv.

Brière is still a top 6 forward, he played on the 4th line because of a slow start and had issues with the coach (As far as I can tell, Parenteau had the same issues with Roy)

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms found the back of the net three times in 21 seconds in last night's 5-3 win over Binghamton, but that might not even be the most impressive part: the three goals all came in the first 36 seconds of the game. This is why you should be in your seats by puck drop.

A rough night for goalie Andrew Hammond, who was pulled after stopping zero of the three shots he faced. Which was maybe a good move to preserve his mental well-being, but I feel like giving up three goals in 21 seconds requires a true team effort.

St. Louis (AFP) - Martin Brodeur, the National Hockey League's all-time win leader among goaltenders, will retire Thursday and join the St. Louis Blues' front office, the NHL club announced Tuesday.

The 42-year-old Canadian will hang up his skates after 21 seasons with the New Jersey Devils and seven games this season for the Blues, who have hired him for a hockey operations management role, Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said on the team website.

Brodeur went 3-3 with a 2.87-goals against average and 89.9 save percentage while St. Louis netminder Brian Elliott was injured in December and January.

Brodeur won three Stanley Cup crowns with the Devils -- in 1995, 2000 and 2003 -- as well as helping backstop Canada to Olympic gold in 2002 and 2010.

He finishes his career with 691 victories in 1,266 games, including 125 shutouts. All three of those totals are NHL all-time records. Brodeur also captured the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender in a season in 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008.

"Congratulations on a storied career and thanks for letting us share in it," the Blues posted on their website on a photo of Brodeur waving to the crowd.

Brodeur's final career shutout came in a Blues uniform, when he blanked the Colorado Avalanche on December 29.

He was not re-signed by the Devils after last season and was a free agent seeking one more chance in the NHL when the Blues came calling after Elliott was hurt in late November.

Prague (AFP) - Canada and the USA are the only teams with a perfect record at the ice hockey world championships after winning their third games in the group stage on Monday.

The USA went top of Group B, played in the eastern city of Ostrava, after beating defending champions Russia 4-2.

Los Angeles Kings forward Trevor Lewis put the US team 1-0 ahead in the sixth minute.

Russian defenceman Anton Belov levelled the score early in the second period but Boston defenceman Torey Krug scored a second US goal three minutes later.

Arizona forward Marc Arcobello, who swapped teams in the NHL three times this season, raised the score to 3-1 in the 52nd minute.

Sergei Plotnikov narrowed the goal difference four minutes before the end but New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson then found an empty net nine seconds before the siren to round off the score as Russia had pulled Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovski.

"Undoubtedly those guys are going to get their chances, their opportunities," said Krug.

"You can't stop all of them but we did a pretty good job of keeping that number down."

"We did well at realising when we had to calm the game down, get the puck out of the zone."

In Group A, played in Prague, Canada beat the Czech Republic 6-3 a day after humiliating Germany 10-0.

Edmonton forward Jordan Eberle scored four minutes into the game and his NHL teammate Taylor Hall added another on 19 minutes, but the Czechs narrowed the lead through Arizona wing Martin Erat before the first intermission.

The home fans went frantic as Martin Zatovic put the Czechs level in the 36th minute, but their joy was short-lived as Philadelphia forward Sean Couturier handed the star-packed Canadian team a lead two minutes later.

Dallas Stars young gun Tyler Seguin and Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby scored power-play goals in the last period.

Former St Louis Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka narrowed the difference, only for Los Angeles forward Tyler Toffoli to round off the score a minute before the final siren.

In the first Group A game of the day, Boston forward Loui Eriksson scored a hat-trick as Sweden thrashed underdogs Latvia 8-1.

Joel Lundqvist, playing for Frolunda in the Swedish league, had a goal and an assist while Arizona defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson assisted twice.

In the evening game in Group B, Finland beat Norway 5-0.

Finland forward Joonas Kemppainen scored twice and added an assist and defenceman Esa Lindell had a goal and two assists while Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne stopped 20 shots for his second shutout of the tournament.

i suppose the rangers will win game 7 again

Lundqvist is working on a NHL-record streak of six straight wins in Game 7 situations. To put that into some perspective, only two other goalies, the legendary pair of Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur, can say that they have so many as six Game 7 wins in their careers.

And it’s not like Lundqvist is simply doing an average job in those games while getting stellar offensive support. He has not allowed more than one goal in any of the six contests, making 179 saves on 184 shots for a 0.84 goals-against average. Then there’s this stat, just to support the theory that the goalie’s Game 7 prowess has quasi-supernatural qualities:

http://i.imgur.com/B6kJ5wF.png

Of course, we’re past May 13 now, but we’re not done counting the ways in which Lundqvist figures to be nearly impossible to beat in Friday’s Game 7 in New York. He is 10-0 in his past 10 elimination games at Madison Square Garden, allowing less than a goal per game in those contests.

I wouldn't bet against them in a game 7, especially at home

By Allen Muir - Sports Illustrated

http://i.imgur.com/9qrdkM4.jpg

Safe to say that Al Arbour, who passed away on Friday morning at 82 after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease and dementia, will be universally eulogized as the legendary coach who guided the New York Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cups.

Fair enough. After all, behind the bench is where Alger made his name in the game.

He earned his spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame back in 1996 as a leader of men. A winner of 19 consecutive playoff series, a mark that hasn’t been equaled since and never will be, and second all time in both wins (782) and games coached (1,607). He racked up 1,500 of them behind the Islanders bench (a single-franchise record), a nice round figure he achieved when Ted Nolan, who was coaching the Isles at the time, noticed that Al had retired in 1994 at 1,499 and invited him back for one more kick at the can. Arbour agreed to the one-game stint and on Nov. 3, 2007 he led New York to a 3–2 win over the Penguins.

Arbour earned his longevity via the coaching acumen he absorbed along the way from men like Scotty Bowman and Joe Crozier and Punch Imlach. He was a brilliant defensive tactician who also knew how to rev up an offense. But Arbour’s hallmark as a coach was his decency. That’s not to say he was soft, but he recognized there was a person underneath the sweater.

“I think Al was the greatest coach of all time in that he balanced the winning with a personal touch,” former Islander Chico Resch said in a 2011 interview. “I think those factors have become more important than ever.

“When you are dealing with modern-day athletes who are used to not being told no, given a tremendous amount and not being severely disciplined you really have to do it with a personal touch and tact. Al was always the best at that. And he could do it in a way that he never left the person he was doing it with embarrassed. They always say Scotty Bowman and Al were the greatest and I’d pick Al just because of his personal touch.”

“He was the best coach I ever played for,” Ray Ferraro told NHL.com. “Al had the best feel for what the player needed or could handle—kick in the [rear] or pat on the back ... he knew which [to use].”

Among his brilliant touches were putting an egg in the pants of a player he felt needed to be more physical, the message being the player would surely come out of a corner with the egg uncracked. He also left plates of dog biscuits in the lockers of players he felt were playing, well, like dogs.

“Al could really get on you,” recalled Denis Potvin, the Islanders’ Hall of Fame defenseman who drew the coach's ire early in his career while Arbour was molding him into the team’s captain. “He’d say, ‘Potvin, I know you skate like you have a piano on your back, but don’t stop to play the thing.’ Not much you can say to that.”

Before turning the Islanders into a dynasty, Arbour worked wonders in his first gig with the expansion St. Louis Blues, as Mark Mulvoy chronicled in a 1972 feature for SI. Normally mild mannered, after being hired by the Blues for the second time, replacing Sid Abel, he got into a fracas with fans in Philadelphia while pursuing a ref he thought had been favoring the Flyers.

As defenseman Bob Plager recalled, “When Al chased after [referee John] Ashley, it was the first time all year someone had stood up for us. It brought us together. Now we were ready to stand up for ourselves and be counted. It really was what I’d call the making of a hockey team.”

But before he became a coaching legend, Arbour was just another guy trying to earn his place in the NHL. There won’t be much attention paid to that today, and maybe that’s understandable considering that he scored only 12 career goals and 70 points over 626 games split between Detroit, Chicago, Toronto and St. Louis. But the way Arbour played the game informed the man he became as a coach.

Don Cherry, who won the Calder Cup with Arbour as part of the 1964-65 Rochester Americans, once described him as a player who never got the recognition he deserved. “He was smart as a whip. He really knew the game.”

“He was the kind of guy who didn’t have great stats but teams always traded for him just before the playoffs,” Plager wrote in his book, Tales From The Blues Bench.

In today’s game Arbour would have been a valuable commodity, a defensive defenseman who could be counted on to make the right play under pressure. But back then, with just six teams and fewer than 40 jobs to be had, he was a journeyman who spent almost as much time riding the buses as he did enjoying the good life in the NHL. He wasn’t particularly skilled, and he carried the stigma of being the only guy in the league who wore glasses on the ice (hence his bookish nickname "Radar” that was bestowed upon him by Jack Adams, his coach with Detroit, who called him a “blind-eyed, CinemaScope, radar, sonuvabitch”). But Arbour was strong and steady, always in position and as fearless as anyone in the game. Fans and teammates would marvel at his willingness to block shots while wearing those glasses.

And he was a winner. He helped Detroit, Chicago and Toronto to Stanley Cup championships before getting another shot at the NHL at 35 when expansion created six teams’ worth of new opportunities. He was coaxed out of retirement two weeks into the 1967-68 season and was named the captain of the expansion St. Louis Blues where he thrived under Bowman. “He had the ability to dig deeper when he had to, to make himself go harder when he was hurting or when the team needed him,” Bowman said. “That’s toughness.”

But even the toughest among us can only battle for so long.

Rest in peace, Al.

I'm not entirely sure. It's pretty obvious that the All Star game isn't for regular fans. It's a corporate schmooze-fest, and perhaps also an attempt to get casual viewers more invested.

... To their credit, I have to admit it was by FAR the best All Star game in years. 5 on 5 with no hitting, checking or shot blocking was a joke. At least this new format of 3 on 3 looked like the overtime 3 on 3 that we're getting used to. They were actually clearing trying out there for most of the games which was a first. And the John Scott thing was kind of a feel-good story-line.

I have a feeling given the buzz and success, we might see this format for a few years in a row now... although the 4 teams of each division was silly. I'm not sure there's any pride in playing for 'Team Metropolitan Division'

Maybe that you're getting used to :nono: There was nothing wrong with playing a 5 minute OT period of 5 on 5 hockey that may or may not have ended in a tie. Hockey is already an exciting sport, there is no need to add extra artificial theatrics/dramatics to it [-(

McDavid had a 5 point night... kid is unbelievable. More exciting to watch than Sid IMO.

I wonder if he can win a Calder with only 40 games or so... doubt it.

Aaaand Detroit extended a 25 year playoff streak. Unbelievable. You can't buy a sports culture like that.

And no Canadian team made the playoffs this year. That's like sacrilege or something.

Canadian franchises are all in a sad state of affairs... not even sure how you explain that. My theory is that they're all too top heavy with upper management but that's a pretty vague statement. It's just weird.
