Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

Canucks carry on Rypien's legacy

VANCOUVER — Mindcheck.ca is the culmination of a three-tiered project to recognize symptoms and better understand the challenges of mental illness. Kevin Bieksa is hopeful it will have one positive result to remember fallen Vancouver Canucks teammate Rick Rypien in the most positive light.

The Canucks for Kids Foundation, Fraser Health and Provincial Health Services Authority and BC Children’s Hospital worked in conjunction to re-launch the expanded website Tuesday and Bieksa’s participation is the blue-liner’s best means to remember his close friend. Rypien, who had long battled depression, was found dead Aug. 15 in his Alberta home.

“I obviously have a personal interest invested in this and it’s near and dear to my heart to carry on his legacy,” said Bieksa. “I went through it with him the last few years and understand the struggles and mental health challenges and how underestimated it can be and how overlooked, too.

“There’s still not a lot of conversation out there and we’re trying to raise awareness and erase the stigma associated with it. Hopefully, we don’t have to see anybody else go through something like that.”

The hope was that July 2 would be the day to rightfully remember Rypien when it was announced that the former Canucks winger had signed a one-year contract with the Winnipeg Jets to re-energize his troubled NHL career. And now the hope is that by honouring Rypien’s contributions to the franchise over six years on Oct. 18 before the Canucks hosted the New York Rangers, it would help bring into focus that the Canucks are committed to building awareness and supporting those who are suffering from the similar challenges that Rypien faced. The Canucks are wearing his No. 37 on their helmets to honour the gritty forward and willing to work on mental health awareness.

“The goal is to help a lot of kids and troubled youth in B.C. and I had a bit of a helping hand in the process and have been to a few meetings and I’m pretty proud of the website,” added Bieksa. “Obviously, it’s a tribute to Rick and to help carry out his legacy and it’s something he always wanted to do and never had the chance to do. This is me following through on his wishes.

“He was close to doing it on a number of occasions and he really wanted to help out kids and wanted to go around to the schools and share his story with whoever he could. This is obviously the best next way and we feel it’s going to help a lot of kids who are struggling with mental health challenges across B.C. Hopefully, this can point them in the right direction.”

Mindcheck.ca features interactive quizzes and information and medical resources.

“Rick always wanted to help others and to have this website now to help people out and have the resources to ask for help, people have to check it out,” said Canucks winger Alex Burrows.

Another interesting problem that Brendan Morrison was talking about the other day was how there's way too much coaching in the NHL. You know that if you make any little mistakes, you're going to get singled out and ragged on by the coaches the next day. Your minutes will be cut for doing anything ballsy or risky. So the end result is a LOT of muzzled talent :wha:

That's not to say it won't make a winning hockey team, but it's that wide up, end to end, risk-taking shit that makes the CHL and NCAA hockey so awesome.

Interesting sequence when I was watching the Wings Ducks game Fri night. The game goes into OT. The Wings take a penalty so it's 4 on 3. Then the Ducks take a penalty so it goes to 3 on 3. Then they take another so it goes back to 4 on 3 for the Wings. Then the Wings first penalty expires so it turns into a 5 on 3 for the Wings. I don't know if I've ever seen a 5 on 3 in OT before. I will say though 3 on 3 hockey is pretty fun to watch. I would totally support this move if the NHL wanted to do it for OT in the future.

The Montreal Canadiens acquired a familiar name in a trade that has defenceman Hal Gill going to the Nashville Predators on Friday.

As part of the deal, the club acquired forward Blake Geoffrion - son of former Canadien Danny Geoffrion, grandson of Habs great Bernie Geoffrion and great-grandson of Montreal legend Howie Morenz.

The Canadiens also sent a conditional fifth-round pick in 2013 to Nashville in the deal and acquired forward Robert Slaney and a second-round draft pick in 2012.

The Predators will get the fifth-round pick if Geoffrion plays at least 40 games with the Canadiens next season. (I'm actually SHOCKED  that we got that much for Gill!)

Gill is GREAT on the PK and is a real leader in all the teams he got to be a part of but that is a big price to pay for someone which is getting slower and slower (which is bad while being on 5 on 5)
EDIT: LOL I've just found out that Gill played more games in the NHL (1047) than the Predators have in franchise history (1041)

A Lucic-style player in Kassian just doesn't fit Vancouver's system right now. Eastern teams all emulate Boston with grit and toughness but Western teams like Van try to emulate Detroit with finesse and speed. This trade is bizarre to me. Max Pacioretty got his 30th goal of the season :) (More than Ovechkin with 27....) Quite unbelievable when you think of what happened to him a year ago when he got hit by Chara.(It did exactly a year yesterday)

Andrei Markov back in the lineup tonight for the Habs, I'm happy to see him back BUT I'm REALLY nervous to see him back against the Canucks...I would have waited against a weaker/less physical team.

In other news, this talk of bringing back the red line seems like a terrible idea :wha: The game is finally at a good pace.

I do like the talk of changing OT to be longer or included more 4v4/3v3 time. No doubt in my mind the players will go for that. I doubt there's a guy in the league who will sit there and say they think winning an OT game proves who the better team is.

Agreed but they have to do something to deal with those concussion (This is getting crazy...injuries are part of the job but this is too much here) Changing the players equipment seems like a better idea though (Too damn hard...those hitting don't feel a thing but those getting hit= KO ) and IMO...a 3 vs 3 OT would be more exciting to watch than a shoot-out.

I agree... the return of the red line is too much of a risk to the game being any fun to watch. We'll have a lot of dead puck, sloooooow, St Louise style games where people just don't give a crap.

Changing the gear and having zero tolerance for head-shots is the best solution if the NHL is serious about cracking down.

There's also a bit of talk about a hybrid touch-icing rule where you race to the dots... sounds just stupid. Icing just has to be a respect thing.

yeah I hate the idea of putting the red line back in, slows the game down. I would like to see them get rid of the trapezoid though. Let the goalies handle the puck, I feel like the trapezoid creates more situations for injuries something that the NHL is looking to decrease. Personally I like the shootout but if they wanted to get rid of it for 3-3 OT or 5 min of 4-4 then 5 min of 3-3 I would be in favor of it. 3-3 hockey is pretty fun to watch.

I agree with all of this

I had an idea with icing - it should be the players on the ice when the play is called for icing must stay ... that way if a player can get to the bench and change before the whistle blows is ok. However - if the new player is not on the ice when the whistle blows - the team has the faceoff shorthanded and the player can join the play as soon as the puck is dropped.

If the new player is on the ice before the tired player gets off and the whistle blows - then he is not allowed to stay - OR - and this will never fly... the team is assessed a too many men on the ice penalty.

The reason that I thought this - would be that goalie's would then be able to play the puck before the icing and try to catch the players heading for the bench.

just a thought

Just listen to any one of the old media guys talk about this on sports radio. I haven't heard a single person in favor of it. It's a really, really bad idea that will kill neutral zone play, just in hopes that it will prevent concussions :wha:

It took talks from 1980 to 2005 for someone to actually smarten up and take it out. It's no wonder the IIHF hasn't had it for 30 years or so.

I also hate the fact that some shoot-outs (which are now completely boring BTW thanks to using them to decide OT, but I digress) go too long. I think that if it's still tied after 4 players take their shots in the OT shoot-out, they should play Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock

Teh One Who Knocks

They should also make the nets bigger, we need more scoring for the ADD crowd because the fastest team sport on the planet still isn't entertaining enough. :-k

Plus, when there is a disputed goal, instead of going to instant replay, I think the 2 goalies should have a fistfight at center ice, that will decide if the goal counts or not :-k

I get your disdain for the constant changes, but I think you're underestimating the power the red-line would have. We're not talking about a goofy little change here. The game is FINALLY at a great pace for the first time since before the lock-out. The red line would kick the legs out from under the table. Return of the 'Dead-Puck Era.'

You're against nerfing the league to get rid of concussions, but that's exactly what this move would be for.

I still say leave touch icing and the open neutral zone alone, get rid of shootouts and football gear in the NHL, and leave everything else the way it is. The tweaking isn't going to stop ever though which as you illustrated, is annoying

Canucks finally won a game... against the worst team in the NHL. Funny, the analysts were saying how bad Boston and Vancouver have both been since they played each other in January. Losing to soft teams and sucking on the PP. Bummer. Rematch seems unlikely.

Interesting hearing Keith Ballard talk about his concussion (he has missed half the season). I've kinda ignored a lot of the media talking about it, but now I'm hearing the players say "no, the media blows a lot up, but this is important. The game is so much faster and bigger and stronger now. And how many guys just had to suck it up and deal with 'their bell being wrung' back in the day." It's ugly.

Ballard was saying he would work-out one day and be sick in bed for the next 4. He was dizzy, nauseated, headaches, sensitive to light. Sounded like a bitch of a time. Eventually he just had to shut himself done for an entire month, do nothing. Interesting to hear him talk so candidly, really made an impact on me.

To put it simply...players don't give a flying f@#$ about concussions UNTIL they get one and if they still don't care after getting one...maybe they suffered brain damage on the initial hit to begin with and "can't" care much

Molson said that he wanted to wait till there was no hope to make the playoffs...which happened last game and the timing IMO is about right (It would be WAY too late to wait a month from now...the draft is coming FAST) and it gives about 10 more days to look for a replacement as said earlier I REALLY like the fact that he got Savard to help him find a new General Manager, he was the one who had the job when they won their last 2 Stanley Cups...when a new GM gets the job he gets new staff (coaches) which takes time so earlier, the better but some candidates might not be available before the end of the season.
