Edmonton needs a shake-up now too... peopel forget that young teams don't always magically become good. You can be young and suck balls just like you can be old and still kicking the tires like Detroit always is.

Another reason NOT to sign the guy  The Habs have a good core that should not be touched...but those around them should (Price,Subban,Pacioretty,Cole,Desharnais,Gorges and Emelin...don't really care about the rest )

I'd trade Pacioretty while his stock is so inflated  You know you have a bad team when he's your best player. I'll eat dirt if he scores 30 goals again next year. He's just not that good at hockey...

I'd put the under-performing PK and the undersized Desharnais up for grabs too if I was running the show. Hell, Phaneuf isn't a guy I'd build a team around, and half the roster has just generally underperformed against their salary. Time for a big shakeup isn't it... The GM situation in Montreal is as ugly as Burke's run in Toronto.

They looked like they could win the Pacific and instead they just simply blow

With the CBA stuff though, I'm no longer as confident anyone can take him. It was always accepted that you'd be able to bury his long contract cap hit in the minor leagues in his last couple seasons. But that could change (which could have effects on several teams around the league too)

I was hoping he would come back for just one more year since we got the winter classic next year, but oh well. It's gonna be weird without him. Wow that's all shocking... why is Pitt worried about a high first round draft more than solid goaltending unless they didn't want Fleury for some reason? They have three stars in Malkin, Crosby and Staal, with rookie James Neal scoring 40 goals as the icing on the cake. Sure they can draft a superstar but how do they expect to sign all these guys the next 2 years. Maybe they're worried about Crosby's health that much? I'm just spit-balling obviously. Yeah I wondered the same, and Staal missed 20 games last year as well. Still seems like something you'd hold out another season to do. Crosby still has another year on his contract, as does Stall. Well, if they put it back on ESPN instead of making people pay extra for specialty channels to watch it, then maybe it would have fucking higher ratings.

Sounds like Patrick Roy got reasonably far in the talks, wonder if he'll take another NHL job. And I say take not get, because he's obviously wealthy and happy enough to only take something decent.

Looks like I missed the entire game in those few minutes - my brother was telling me the refs missed a huge call on the kings, then turned around and a couple minutes later made the boarding call against the devils and gave 'em a 5 minute major for it and bam, 3-0 and that's the fuggin game right there. Sans that call, or if they actually made the call against the kings, it was an entirely different game.

He turned down big money to play in Van, and $4 mil range is normal for a top 4 dman. As you said, it was a lean year for UFA's, and he's locked in for 6 years in the prime of his career! I don't know about any gambling rumor. I heard the same thing about Chelios the last few years before he retired. There were reports that said that Jagr was unhappy about being taken off the first line and the first power play unit when his production slumped at the end of the season. Best trade: Sutter for Staal. Awesome deal for both sides, I can't wait to see a line with Skinner, Staal, Staal. Or having two lines centered by Staals

I know its an old post and all...but some info I saw somewhere, he wanted Galchenyuk from the start...Habs took him in 3rd rank and he had to take Reilly

It's hilarious! The league has been sending out monthly emails to players the last 7 years telling them how much money is being generated, revenue, profits ect  And it's a lot. Now they're back to this act of turning their pockets inside out and looking broke at the bargaining table?!?! That's bullshit.

Unlike last lockout, the fans are much less likely to side with Ownership this time (most of us then said "I'd play for free, so be happy with what you get"). This league has grown yet another billion dollars in revenue since then. It is not broke. And in terms of 'stability' owners claim there isn't... just look at Winnipeg. They're guaranteed sell outs for the next 5 year!!!

This go around, I do not believe the players need to agree to any of the massive cutbacks these owners are pretending they need. NHL'ers put their lives on the line while ownership has compromised safety. They are members of a business, and deserve a fair cut of profits (50% was, and is fair) - nobody comes to see ownes, they come to see Crosbys and Ovetchkins. They deserve to have their paycheques even if they are badly hurt on the job and don't play again. And like Sam said, they just signed these contracts, they didn't write them.

All kidding aside, I stand by my belief that professional athletes don't deserve to get paid as much as they do. As far as I'm concerned, they don't provide a necessary service to civilization, they don't push forward progress, and the argument can be made that they don't improve the economic situation of the communities that they and their team are in.

Also, them putting their lives on the line to play the game is their choice. No one put a gun to their head and said "you must play hockey". They could have always chosen to do something else for a living that people would consider "safer". I say the same thing about football.

Don't get me wrong, I love sports (except basketball and golf), but there's no way in hell any of the shit associated with sports should cost as much as it does. It's a waste and the money could be better used elsewhere.

See hockey as a business and not a sport, the league is making money, players and owners are "business partners", they are just getting their share of the cake. Is it more than it should be? sure, but know from facts (Forbes) Habs owner sees his team make around 3M$ PER GAME from tickets ALONE (Including suites ) He bought them for 575M$ and will make a profit quite fast

And about the bold part, it's not rare to see players give millions to the community ;) (The money would be there anyway if it doesn't go to the players, it would just go to the owners pockets)

And :woot: Shea Weber!

Agreed on Weber. If he can't be a Canuck, Philly is my next favorite stop!

But I totally disagree with your argument. Our countries run on private enterprise. You can't snuff Nurf on its profits for selling a totally useless toy, or golf courses for selling something that nobody needs. If you really think the profits are ridiculous, increase taxation or have the public own the local team... that's working great in Phoenix.

When I speak of advertising, I'm talking about Nike and Pepsi paying the NHL to have their product seen during these games, not on the side of a Research lab. When I'm paying $200 for hockey, it's because there's an issue of supply and demand driving prices up to that level, but I'm still willing to pay 'x' dollars to see what the NHL offers... not to see 'mankind benefit in a productive manner.' That's basic economics. Sports franchises have every right to compete for my disposable income. And they're doing it well - therefore the money they get is earned.

So the NHL is business, just like anything else. It's up to them to enjoy their profits and distribute them in a fair manor, and as a paying customer my two cents is that fair is splitting at least half the pie with those who form the talent and attract the crowds. Simple as that. With this CBA being up, I think the Ownership are full of shit saying they're broke. They're just being slave drivers now.

And this money doesn't go entirely to greed, as it may at Apple or Pepsi (both selling unnecessary products). Hockey gives back: several players on the Canucks have given away hundreds of thousands of their own dollars and more importantly they give their own time. And the team runs Canuck Place to house families with sick kids at the nearby hospital, with many of the player's wives volunteering there full time. All good stuff that they don't have to do.

Shea Weber’s contract is the latest in NHL lunacy

http://i45.tinypic.com/25h23a8.jpg

And so, the National Hockey League descends into farce.

Just as the owners are crying poor and demanding limitations on contract lengths during the opening bargaining sessions of the new collective bargaining agreement, those same owners are signing players to deals so long that calculators are needed to determine the end date.

So far, we have seen Sidney Crosby re-upped for 12 years and US$104.4-million, Zach Parise and Ryan Suter signed to matching 13-year, US$98-million contracts. And now, according to multiple reports, the Philadelphia Flyers signed Nashville Predators defenceman Shea Weber to an offer sheet late on Wednesday night that stretches on for 14 years and reportedly tops US$110-million.
Related

It all seems so illogical and so silly that you half-expect NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to step out of his Manhattan offices and shout, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”

For now, we’ll play along and pretend this is actually happening, that team general managers are simply following the advice given to them heading into summer free agency and are conducting business as usual. If so, then good on them, because this might be the last time we see these deals.

Then again, maybe this is just the start.

It is tough to imagine what — if any — leverage Bettman will now have in CBA negotiations. Perhaps this is why NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr seemed so relaxed when presented with the league’s initial proposal last week, which essentially sought to protect the owners from themselves.

Of course, it is difficult to blame the Flyers for what they are attempting. This is a genius, if not callous, move on their part.

The team had reportedly been attempting a trade with the Predators for Weber. When those attempts failed, the Flyers used a rarely used option in the CBA to extract the player from his team.

Anyone could have done it. That it happened now, two weeks after Nashville lost Suter in a bidding war to the Minnesota Wild, is another blow for the small-market Predators.

“Nashville was working on a trade and its believed several deadlines passed before Flyers grew tired of waiting,” reported TSN’s Darren Dreger, who broke the story. “Weber signed offer sheet.”

If you are going to sign anybody in the league to a 14-year contract worth a reported US$110-million, Weber might be the most deserving. He is a two-time Norris Trophy finalist, the kind of player that you can build a team around. Naturally, the 26-year-old would fill the soon-to-be-departed skates of Chris Pronger.

That is, if it gets that far.

The Predators have seven days to decide whether or not to match the offer. If they do not, they could receive a package of four first-round draft picks from the Flyers. Both options are enticing. But having already lost defenceman Suter to free agency this summer, the team might not be able to sell a rebuild to its fans.

So we wait and see what happens. And all the while, Donald Fehr’s smile continues to grow.

Tell them to go out and get a real job FFS. I get so sick of players arguing with teams that they need X millions of dollars per year or they are gonna go somewhere else. It's asinine. And as far as any injury concerns, players in all sports know full well what the risks are in their chosen "profession" so don't even try and play that up.

Bottom line, they play a fucking game for a living and they get paid in one year than most people will ever make in their entire lives. They need to get over themselves and do what I tell everyone else that bitches about how bad their job is....quit! Go find another job.

How is training your entire life, sacrificing mornings, evenings, weekends, thousands of dollars and huge dedication and support from your family, not to mention your health, not a 'real job.' These athletes put a lot more to get to where they are in their careers than most of us have. I've lived with pro athletes and symphony orchestra musicians; they live very similar lives. Both real jobs.

We buy jerseys, tickets and products affiliated with sports. Players argue to get huge dollars, because that money is there for someone to take home. They are the face of a company that makes millions of dollars every night they go out there. I'm not sure where exactly all this money should go, if half doesn't go back to contracts for the few hundreds of players, instead of the one owner.

If you want to watch athletes who get an unfair cut of the profits, watch the CFL.
